Teens Pottery and Ceramics: Handbuilding with Jodi Doster

Monday – Friday, Aug 3 – 7
1:00 – 3:00 pm
Grades 8th- 12th
Location: Wallkill River Center for the Arts
Cost: $135 per student
This handbuilding ceramics class introduces students to three core techniques: pinch pots, coiling, and slab construction.
Participants will work with a mid-range white cone 5/6 clay, which will be oxidation fired in an electric kiln. Students will create both functional items—such as cups, plates, jars, and vases—and nonfunctional pieces including critter pots. Decorative finishing methods, including carving, sculpting, and sprig slabs, will be taught, along with final decoration using underglaze.
All completed works will be fired in the instructor’s kiln, then clear glazed. Finished pieces may be collected at the art center upon completion. Please note that pickup timing may vary depending on kiln load requirements and the duration of bisque and glaze firing cycles.
Jodi Doster has been teaching science and art 18 years at Bristol Bay Borough Middle/High School in Nanek, Alaska. She is also an Adjunct Professor for the University of Alaska Fairbanks where she teaches biology and art.
Please note, Jodi will be bringing her service dog Monet to class.
