Artist Statement: When working on a thematic series of paintings, I become single minded in the studio, diligently banishing any off-focus idea that crops in. So I allow prolonged periods of unrestricted observation and creation before choosing and devoting myself to the rigor of an exclusive concept. These are productive periods, though the paintings produced often remain outliers. “Observations” is a selection from the paintings born of this process, paintings created between themes while leading me toward my next, united by their essential role in my studio practice, the journey of considered ideas and meandering observations.
Biography: Joe Radoccia is currently a Hudson Valley-based artist, best known for creating thematic bodies of work focused on various facets of intimacy. In recent years he has exclusively focused on portraiture creating oversized monochromatic portraits. During the isolation necessitated by the COVID pandemic his focus shifted, turned to images based on quiet interactions with the world around him, nature: the river, the land, its plants and flowers. Joe Radoccia grew up in Buffalo, NY, where he received his MFA in painting from State University of New York at Buffalo. His work has been exhibited at museums and galleries across the United States, is included in numerous anthologies of male figurative painting and private collections as well as the permanent collection of Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art. In 2020 he was a recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts Artist Fellowship in the category of Drawing. website: joeradoccia.com
