All Levels Welcome

Come explore the vibrant possibilities of oil painting through the time-honored tradition of classical painting. In this class, you’ll gain an understanding of the varied elements that are so essential to creating a painting. We will explore composition, value, light color, observation, form, and so much more through painting the still life and landscape. We’ll also the the mystery out of oil painting by discussing materials and the basic techniques that will hopefully make you feel confident and ready to take the plunge into the rewarding medium of oil paint. There will be individual instruction in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Below is a list of suggested art supplies, if you already have oil paint and paint brushes please bring them on the first day of class and we can review your material then.

Supply List:

Amazon
Local Stores: Newburgh Art Supply and Michaels

SUPPORT/SURFACE:
Either: Canvas Board or Stretched Canvas: (Sizes to choose from: 8”x10” – 9”x12” – 11”x14” ).
* For first day have one of these recommended sizes.

PALETTE:
A wood palette is highly recommended over recessed and disposable palettes. The warm wood tone is better for accuracy in mixing color.
OR:
a gray-toned paper palette.

BRUSHES:
Oil painting requires durable brushes that will stand up to repeated use and the effects of oils, varnishes and cleaning solvents. There are 6 different brush shapes: rounds, flats, brights, filberts, fan blenders and riggers. Bristle flats and filberts are strong and the most versatile to use. Fan blenders are used to feather wet paint and soften brushstrokes. Riggers are synthetic sable hair and are used for fine detail. It is ideal to have 2 brushes, in 5 to 6 different sizes (ex. #2, #4, #6, #8, #10 and a few different sized fan blenders). But one of each for now is fine. Although, If you have brushes already you can bring those in instead for now and we’ll go over them.

PAINT:
I recommend the use of quality oil pigments but you can use the most affordable oil paint that you can find. A student grade is fine as well. Colors for the palette are as follows :
1- Titanium White
2- Yellow Ochre
3- CadmiumYellow Light
4- Cadmium Yellow Deep
5- Cadmium Red Light
6- Alizarin Crimson
7- Burnt Umber
8- Viridian
9- Cobalt Blue
10- Ultramarine Blue
11- Ivory Black
*This numerical list is how to ‘string’ your palette using the order in which the paints appear above.

Tools and Mediums for Oil Painting:

Small Jar of Refined Linseed Oil

Odorless Turpentine

Metal or Glass Solvent Cups: to use for your mediums while painting.
