SUMMARY:CONCERT | Steve Gorn: Music for the Healing of Mind & Body
DESCRIPTION:Wallkill River Center for the Arts is pleased to present STEVE GORN: MUSIC FOR THE HEALING OF MIND & BODY as part of our 2025 music series. \n  \nFar more than entertainment\, music is a portal for mind-body synchronization; a conduit for engagement in ritual\, group catharsis\, entertainment and a holder of mythology and history.  Steve Gorn explores The Transformative Power of Music in words and live performance. Drawing on Indian classical music this will be an offering of music for healing of the mind\, body\, and soul. \nSteve plays Bansuri Bamboo Flute and will be joined for this special collaborative concert by Naren Budhakar playing tabla percussion\, dancer Savia Berger\, and a special surprise Guest. \n  \nSunday\, August 17\, 3 – 5 pm\nWRCA Galleries at The Patchett House\n232 Ward Street\, Montgomery\, NY \n  \nThis event is free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $20/person. Registration – at bottom of event page –  is requested but not required.  \n_____ \n\n\n\nAbout the performers:\n\n\nSteve Gorn plays Indian Classical Music and new American Music on the bansuri bamboo flute in concerts and festivals throughout the world. His gurus are the late bansuri master\, Sri Gour Goswami\, of Kolkata\, and Pandit Raghunath Seth of Mumbai\, who he has often accompanied in concert. He has also studied with the late Ustad Z. M. Dagar. \nDuring the past decade Steve has often performed in India\, appearing at Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal\, Triveni Hall in New Delhi\, The Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata\, NCPA\, and The Nehru Center in Mumbai\, and numerous other venues. His performance with Pandit Ravi Shankar’s disciple\, Barun Kumar Pal\, at Kolkata’s Rama Krishna Mission\, was televised throughout India. In the New York area\, he often performs with Pandit Samir Chatterjee as well as the Darbari Ensemble with sitarist\, Allyn Miner and the sarangi master\, Ramesh Misra. \nSri Gour Goswami introduced Steve to the vocal (gayaki) style of bansuri that was first introduced by the legendary flutist\, Padmabhusan Pannalal Ghosh. As a disciple of this illustrious gharana\, the heart of Steve’s playing reflects an attention to meer and gamak and an ‘old world’ rendering of raga which unfolds timelessly and with attention to the rasa\, or color of each note and melodic contour. \nSince 1996\, Steve has continued his study under the illustrious bansuri master\, Pandit Raghunath Seth\, of Mumbai. Raghunathji’s compositions in numerous ragas\, and his performance style are now a prominent feature of Steve’s performances. \n\n  \nNaren Budhakar was born and brought up in the Indian classical music tradition. He began performing Tabla at a young age. A disciple of Tabla Maestro Ustad Shabbir Nisar\, Naren has played with prominent instrumentalists\, vocalists and dancers including Pandit Birju Maharaj\, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan\, Pandit Jasraj and Shaed Parvez. Naren is co-director of the East-West School of Music at Ananda Ashram and as a faculty member teaches and performs regularly. \n  \n  \nSavia Berger is a dancer\, actor\, choreographer and teacher based in the Catskills where she began her career with Catskill Ballet Theater. Her dance credits include Feld Ballets\, NY\, Eglevsky Ballet\, Basel Ballet (Switzerland)\, Les Danse Donsk (choreographer Mark Allen Davis) and many other independent choreographers. She was featured as an actor in Kismet and performed as a dancer in Brigadoon with the New York City Opera. She went on to study voice and acting and became a member of the original Broadway workshop of Fosse (Director Chet Walker) for a year. \nHer credits as a choreographer and improvisational dancer include Cy Tombly Dreamhouse\, a multi-media evening directed by Marilyn Crispell; collaborations with Peter and Peter (Peter Einhorn\, Peter Wetzler) and dancers; and can be seen improvising with Creative Music Studio’s (founders Karl Berger\, Ingrid Sertso\, Ornette Coleman) Creative Improvisors Orchestra every month in Kingston\, NY. \nSavia has also appeared in industrial shows and on film. She is a second generation classical Pilates instructor certified by Romana Kryzanowska and ran her own Dance and Pilates Studio in New Jersey for 8 years. DESCRIPTION:PROSPECTUS\n\nINTERIORS: A National Exhibition Juried by Wayne Lempka\, Art Collections Manager at The Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz. On view at WRCA Galleries at the historic Patchett House\, September 6 – October 26\, 2025. \n\nCall for Artwork: This exhibit is a national call\, open to all US Artists 18 years of age or older. Artwork may range from realism to non-representational abstraction; 2D and 3D works in all media are welcome; size restrictions apply. \n \n\nDescription: INTERIORS: The spaces we inhabit give us a sense of place and belonging. Interiors can be a corner of our living room\, a view out the window\, a favorite porch swing\, a messy garage. Interiors can also be a state of mind\, an inward look\, navigation of our own psyche. Interiors also exist outdoors\, nature often compartmentalizes space offering natural shelter for ourselves and other animals.  \n\nMeet the JUROR: Wayne Lempka is Art Collections Manager of the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at the State University of New York at New Paltz where he is responsible for the care of over 9\,000 objects in the museum’s permanent collection. He has also served as curator at The Dorsky for many exhibitions including Thoughts of Home\, which explored not only how our living environments reflect who we are but how artists use this idea in their creative expression. Prior to his position at The Dorsky\, Mr. Lempka held positions at Storm King Art Center\, the Museum of American Folk Art\, the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design\, (Smithsonian Institute) the Chase Manhattan Bank Corporate Art Program\, The Historic New Orleans Collection and the Barrett Art Center. Mr. Lempka is currently a lecturer in the Department of Art History at Marist University. He has also taught in the Art History Department of SUNY New Paltz. Mr. Lempka holds a BFA degree in Fine Arts and Art History from Pratt Institute\, and a MA in Art History & Museum Studies from New York University. DESCRIPTION:WRCA CONCERTS: The Arthur Patchett Memorial Music Series features four to six concerts a year with an emphasis on original compositions\, novel arrangements\, and mixed discipline creativity. We use non-traditional venues such as organic farms\, historic buildings\, bookstores\, and other creative venues throughout the region.  The concept is that each concert will be a unique experience in a special venue with the location informing the choice of music and performers. \n  \nAs part of the 2025 concert series\, The WORKS Trio musicians invites visual artists to join them for a 15-minute segment of the June 22nd concert. Artists are invited to paint while the musicians play and capture this musical moment through brushstroke. He also leads FLOW\, Michel Gentile Quartet and Michel Gentile Trio. \nHis release with the collaborative ensemble WORKS was named one of the “best albums of 2013” by Downbeat. As greeter to the public\, effective communication\, multi-tasking\, and time management skills are essential as this position is involved in all aspects of the institution’s operations. Enhancing the overall visitor experience\, this position requires a blend of artistic sensibility and organizational skills\, making it perfect for individuals passionate about art. \n\nResponsibilities \nDuties include answering phones\, greeting and assisting visitors\, processing payments\, entering class registrations\, handling incoming and outgoing artworks for exhibitions\, membership management\, e-communications\, website updates\, light housekeeping\, and administrative support for programs and special projects. \n\nQualifications & Schedule \nExperience: 2+ years’ relevant work; prior administrative experience preferred. \nThe applicant must be welcoming\, detailed oriented\, and a problem solver. A knowledge and interest in art and/or art history is desired. DESCRIPTION:Prior to the reception the same day\, Carl Grauer will be doing a portrait demonstration. This is a two hour seated portrait suitable for teens and up. \nA digital copy will be given to the sitter\, as well as the option to purchase the piece at a discounted price of $300. \n  \nThe portrait sitter will be decided by raffle. Tickets are now available for $5 each. They are available to purchase online and in person. \nThe winner will be pulled December 22nd\, to give the option of it being a gift.

DESCRIPTION:On the last day of this exhibition\, Jena Argenta will give an artist talk on her exhibit\, Love Letters. Please join us December 15th\, 1-3pm. \n  \nMulti-hyphenate\, language-based artist Jena Argenta will bring her most recent work in progress to Wallkill River Center for the Arts (WRCA) in stages beginning November 1\, 2024. The show titled LOVE LETTERS will feature work produced with funds from a 2024 Individual Artist grant. \n“How do you write a love letter in American Ink? is an intentionally fraught question— but it’s also the one we’re faced with\,” states Argenta. \nThe artist continues\, “The works presented here aren’t an answer to the question – they’re an attempt at asking. They’re a way of using multiple art forms as a way toward that asking. Works here were born in dialogue with community voices\, as well as historical\, literary\, and often banned or unrequited “lovers”. \n“In many parts of the world\, calligraphy is the highest art. Calligraphic forms & traditions are “love letters” in the deepest sense. In this series\, I seek to bend my own vantage point\, hand\, and English with brush\, reed\, sentiment\, and the use of empty space.” \nArgenta is a world-traveled artist\, whose vast experiences and adventures include apprenticeships in Arabic Calligraphy with Elinor Aishah Holland in NY and Ahmet Bursali in Istanbul. Her visual work has been privately and commercially commissioned internationally as well as in the US. Her Kimono designs walked the red carpet at the Fez Music Festival in Morocco. \n“We are so pleased to be able to provide gallery space for Jena to bring this unique and deeply felt work to the public. It comes to us in increments\, starting with several works on display during our regularly scheduled artists’ reception on November 9th and culminating in additional works and an artist’s talk on December 15th” says Sarah Fortner Pierson\, WRCA executive director. \n\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program\, a program of the New York Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by Arts Mid-Hudson.

Work must be framed and wired for hanging – there can be NO EXCEPTIONS and unframed work will not be accepted.  Work may be offered for sale; WRCA will collect a 30% commission on sales.   Reception Fri.
