DESCRIPTION:March 1\, 8\, 15th \nSaturday mornings at 9:30-12pm \n$120\, $105 for Members \nLive In Person – Painting with William Noonan \nFor beginner\, intermediate and advanced students. This course is conducted live in the classroom. The instructor’s main medium is oils but any painting medium is welcome in this class. \n  \nStudents are encouraged to follow their own stylistic inclinations while learning and practicing the basic rules of: drawing & painting techniques\, composition\, value\, color mixing\, color theory\, materials and supplies\, etc. \nSubject matter will range and include still life\, landscape\, portrait and figure. Whenever feasible students will work from life\, other times photographic references may be used.  Students may also use this class as an independent-study opportunity and work on their own personal projects. \nAll sessions will be live work sessions. SUMMARY:03/2025 Beginning Watercolor with Alan Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, 10am-12pm \nMarch 2\, 9\, 16\, 23rd \n$120 ($100 Members) ($90 to skip beginners day) \nThe first day of the months’ session is for anyone who is just starting out or needs more guidance. I would recommend that you attend if you’re a first time student of this class! \n\nThis beginning watercolor class will be focused on producing finished work.  I have noticed that I have learned best when following along painting with an artist\, so that is the approach this class will follow. We will produce a finished painting each week with a different subject\, and returning students are welcomed.  The approach will be to paint fast and loose\, to cover the basics of watercolor by doing them\, and hopefully to have some fun. The first day is for beginners who need to learn the starting techniques and the materials.\n\nIn the event of wonderful weather\, this class may go outside to paint! Be sure to bring sunscreen\, a sunhat\, or other item to protect you and make you comfortable.\n\n\nAlan Lewis has been painting in watercolor since 2013\, and usually paints every day.  His subjects vary from portraits to pets to landscapes\, and he enjoys painting plein air whenever possible.  His paintings are looser and more impressionistic\, rather than highly detailed\, and he has been most significantly influenced by the watercolor master Alvaro Castagnet.  A member of the Wallkill River School\, Goshen Art League\, Lower Hudson Valley Plein Air Painters\, and Northeast Watercolor\, he has also recently been awarded for art done with the Friends of the Great Swamp.\n\nStudents will bring their own supplies.\nMinimum 3 Students.\n    \n\n\n\nPaper- I would recommend Strathmore 300 (or better but a little more expensive 400) series\, cold press paper.\nBrushes – A beginner kit might have 1 #10 round\, one smaller brush for detail\, and one larger flat or map brush of about an inch. It is nice to have some different sizes\, but you don’t need expensive brushes to start.\nPaint – Avoid chalky mediums like Reeves. Tubes will be easier to work with than pans.\nPalette – A watercolor palette has many wells for your paint and space to mix colors.\nOther – Not really necessary in this class\, but will be useful at home- A hairdryer\, painters tape\, paper towels\, etc.\n\n\nREFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

DESCRIPTION:March 4\, 11\, 18\, 25th \nTuesdays \n1-3pm \nAt the Wallkill River Center for the Arts\n\n$160\, $140 Members\n\nThis class is for anyone who has always wanted to paint with acrylic but was intimidated by the more advanced classes. This class is meant to be a gathering of likeminded artists who want the joy of painting in a group atmosphere.\nFor beginners\, we will cover all the beginner fundamentals of painting including supplies\, mixing color\, how to use brushes\, creating a good composition\, how to pick a subject\, identifying a focal point etc. For more advanced students\, there will be one on one time with the instructor to go over your piece and suggested guidance. \n\nYour piece will be worked on for multiple days\, don’t fret if it doesn’t finish the first day!\n\n\nFor beginners\, a picture will be posted in the Wallkill River Center for the Arts facebook group by Nancy that will be what you’ll be working off of\, please be sure to print off that image in color. Limited copies may be available. For more advanced students\, you’re encouraged to bring your own references or works in progress to work on.\nStudents will bring their own supplies. Beginners are welcome to sign up for the +Materials options  to have their supplies provided for the first class to get to know the supplies before you go out and buy your own. \nOil painters are welcome to attend! \n  \nSupply List For Acrylic Class: \n\nPaints; Grumbacher or Windsor and Newton tube acrylics.\nBasic Colors: Titanium White\, Ultramarine Blue\, Burnt Umber\, Alizarin Crimson\, Cadmium Yellow Light.\nBrushes: 1 inch flat\, 1/2 inch flat\, small filbert ( rounded tip) small round and #0 or # 1 liner brush\n11×14 or 12 x 16 canvas\, a couple. Nancy painted murals for the cancer patients in hospitals on Long Island where they were used for guided imagery to take away the patients pain.\nShe came to live in the Hudson Valley in 2004 and joined the Wallkill River School of Art where she now teaches acrylic workshops and plein air painting. Start with making a chain and learning the single crochet stitch. This simple stitch is great for your first project of making a scarf. After this is mastered\, other stitches will be added (double and triple crochet) plus ways to combine them for fancier designs. Classes will be modified according to the students’ desires. Reading patterns will also be explored. If interest continues\, an intermediate and advanced class may be offered. Please bring a skein of yarn (size 4) and a crochet hook (size I or J). DESCRIPTION:On display March 14 – April 27\, 2025 \nOpen to the public Friday – Sundays\, 12-5 pm \nReception: Saturday\, March 22nd\, 3 – 5 pm \n  \nWRCA CELEBRATES SURREALISM in a Collaboration with the Seligmann Center \nSwiss Surrealist painter Kurt Seligmann was a world traveler\, who spent his final years in Sugar Loaf NY\, where visitors to his home and studio included world renowned artists Alexander Calder\, Yves Tanguy\, Marcel Duchamp\, and Max Ernst\, among many others. Among Seligmann’s students there\, were Robert Motherwell and Orange County’s own Frank Shuback. \n“As we approach the end of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Surrealism\, we are excited to have a selection of Kurt Seligmann’s etchings from the Seligmann Estate in Sugar Loaf to be exhibited here at the Wallkill River Center for the Arts (WRCA) in Montgomery NY\,” says WRCA executive director Ursula Morgan. \nThe unique exhibit will also explore the artist’s place in the story of Surrealism. The Jewish Seligmann\, along with his wife Arlette\, was the first of the European Surrealists to emigrate at the start of WWII. SUMMARY:Hopkinesque by Mark Hopkins: Art That Thinks
DESCRIPTION:Mark Hopkins is a regional artist whose style has strong similarities to surrealism\, most notably Salvador Dalí. His work deals with some of the same issues the original surrealists grappled with – the alienation of modernism\, the irrationality of war\, and the study of human psychology. Like the surrealists\, Hopkins engages spontaneous\, creative processes to arrive at novel forms of imagery. Like Dali\, Hopkins’ work features recognizable objects in unrecognizable contexts to elicit an irrational and subconscious reaction or response. \nHopkins’ begins each work with stream-of-consciousness sketches that he carefully works into complex compositions for the canvas. It is only during the painting process that he fully resolves any remaining design issues. \n  \nAbout the artist: Born in Poughkeepsie\, NY\, Mark Hopkins discovered his passion for art early in life\, leading him to graduate with a BA from St. Olaf College in 1981. His journey as an artist has taken him across the globe\, from Asia to Europe\, where he explored diverse cultures and perspectives\, integrating them into his work. Over the decades\, he has painted murals\, created illustrations\, and worked in theater\, film\, and graphic design. Now based in Rhinebeck\, NY\, he focuses on studio work that reflects a lifetime of travel and creative exploration. SUMMARY:04/2025 Oil Painting with William Noonan
DESCRIPTION:March 29th + April 12\, 19th \nSaturday mornings at 9:30-12pm \n$120\, $105 for Members \nLive In Person – Painting with William Noonan \nFor beginner\, intermediate and advanced students. This course is conducted live in the classroom. The instructor’s main medium is oils but any painting medium is welcome in this class. \n  \nStudents are encouraged to follow their own stylistic inclinations while learning and practicing the basic rules of: drawing & painting techniques\, composition\, value\, color mixing\, color theory\, materials and supplies\, etc. \nSubject matter will range and include still life\, landscape\, portrait and figure. Whenever feasible students will work from life\, other times photographic references may be used.  Students may also use this class as an independent-study opportunity and work on their own personal projects. \nAll sessions will be live work sessions.
