SUMMARY:Susan Siegel: Small Kingdoms
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibit of works by Susan Siegel\, on view May 3\, 2024 – June 30\, 2024 \nThe gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment. \nArtist Reception Saturday\, May 11\, 2024 5:00-7:00 pm. Receptions are always free and open to the public. \nArtist Statement: \nIn this body of work\, I draw inspiration from Mary Oliver’s poem\, “Sleeping in the Forest\,” where she alludes to the bustling activity of “Small Kingdoms” at work during the night. This poetic imagery serves as a metaphor for the delicate interplay between humanity and nature. Much like Oliver’s portrayal\, my work delves into the sublime and peaceful merging of boundaries\, inviting viewers to contemplate moments of communion\, impermanence\, and metamorphosis. \nI find my inspiration in the rich traditions of ancient art\, medieval bestiaries\, and 18th- century natural science histories. The heart of my studio practice lies in the techniques of drawing and printmaking\, encompassing drypoints\, etchings\, monotypes\, and experimental collages. By exploring the coexistence of our “Small Kingdoms\,” my art serves as a mirror to the intricate tapestry of our existence in this tragic\, mysterious\, and beautiful world. \nArtist Biography: \nSusan Siegel (b. 1964\, Los Angeles\, California) creates work that engages our connection to the natural world. Siegel holds an MFA from the New York Academy of Art in New York City (2010) with an emphasis in traditional oil painting. Her work has been exhibited in New York\, Chicago and Los Angeles\, including the Glass Gallery at Mana Contemporary\, Sotheby’s and Flowers Gallery. Her work has been featured by New American Paintings\, Hi-Fructose Magazine\, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2012 Siegel was the recipient of a studio residency at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts. She was awarded the Merit Award at the Silvermine Arts Center’s Paper 2019 exhibit curated by Jennifer Farrel\, Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In 2023 she was awarded the Woodstock Artist Association and Museum’s Annual Print Award. Siegel lives and works in the Hudson Valley. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Amy Silberkleit: Last Winter\, Scenes and Objects from Outside
DESCRIPTION:Solo exhibit of works by Amy Silberkleit\, on view May 3\, 2024 – June 30\, 2024.  Artists Reception Saturday\, May 11\, 2024 5:00-7:00 pm.  Receptions are always free and open to the public. \nThe gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment. \nAmy Silberkleit is an artist in the Northern Catskills. Her work is based on the forests\, mountains\, roads\, trails and natural objects found near her home. The extraordinary beauty of the region\, the variety of plants\, forms and textures\, the dramatic changes from season to season are an inexhaustible source of subjects for her work.  She draws detailed landscapes on limestone blocks and hand-prints limited editions in her lithography studio. The tonal range made possible by the lithography stone’s fine texture lends itself perfectly to highly detailed representational drawings. In each piece\, she tries to capture a moment in time while showing the effect of light\, water and temperature on different elements in the landscape. Her intention is to draw the viewer in; to find a place in the landscape and observe the beauty of the natural world. An avid hiker\, she particularly enjoys walking through the forest in winter. Without leaves and undergrowth\, covered in snow\, the contours of the land are revealed. The tones and textures of the landscape stand out when they aren’t overwhelmed by the colors of other seasons. \nAmy has a B.A. in printmaking and a Certificate in Natural Science Art and Illustration from the New York Botanical Gardens. Her drawings and prints have been exhibited in juried shows\, galleries and museums.  Amy is a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists and an Active Member of The Woodstock Artists Association.

SUMMARY:05/2024 Beginning Watercolor with Alan Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, 10am-12pm \nMay 5\, 12\, 19\, 26th \nThis month includes Mothers Day & Memorial Day Weekend! Sign up for the number of days you will attend! \nNo beginners day this month. \n  \n\nThis beginning watercolor class will be focused on producing finished work.  I have noticed that I have learned best when following along painting with an artist\, so that is the approach this class will follow. We will produce a finished painting each week with a different subject\, and returning students are welcomed.  The approach will be to paint fast and loose\, to cover the basics of watercolor by doing them\, and hopefully to have some fun. The first day is for beginners who need to learn the starting techniques and the materials.\n\nIn the event of wonderful weather\, this class may go outside to paint! Be sure to bring sunscreen\, a sunhat\, or other item to protect you and make you comfortable.\n\n\nAlan Lewis has been painting in watercolor since 2013\, and usually paints every day.  His subjects vary from portraits to pets to landscapes\, and he enjoys painting plein air whenever possible.  His paintings are looser and more impressionistic\, rather than highly detailed\, and he has been most significantly influenced by the watercolor master Alvaro Castagnet.  A member of the Wallkill River School\, Goshen Art League\, Lower Hudson Valley Plein Air Painters\, and Northeast Watercolor\, he has also recently been awarded for art done with the Friends of the Great Swamp.\n\nStudents will bring their own supplies.\nMinimum 3 Students.\n \n\n\n\nPaper- I would recommend Strathmore 300 (or better but a little more expensive 400) series\, cold press paper.\nBrushes – A beginner kit might have 1 #10 round\, one smaller brush for detail\, and one larger flat or map brush of about an inch. It is nice to have some different sizes\, but you don’t need expensive brushes to start.\nPaint – Avoid chalky mediums like Reeves. Tubes will be easier to work with than pans.\nPalette – A watercolor palette has many wells for your paint and space to mix colors.\nOther – Not really necessary in this class\, but will be useful at home- A hairdryer\, painters tape\, paper towels\, etc.\n\n\nREFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

SUMMARY:5/28/24 Plum Point Plein Air with Laura Martinez-Bianco
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday May 28th (Rain date May 29th) \n10am – 1pm \nat Kowawese Unique Area at Plum Point \n$50 per person\, $45 for members \nJoin me for a day of plein air painting\, all levels and abilities are invited. Artists are encouraged to work in any medium they are conformable with. This class is not specifically about medium but rather about the concepts and techniques that are universal to Plein Air painting. \nBring your easel\, your painting supplies and a painting surface. Helpful to have a sketchbook\, paper and pencil. This will be a one day event so consider the size you will be working on. \nEach session will be 3 hours with a demo\, individual instruction and critique included. Please bring a snack\, water and a hat. \n \nI am drawn to landscapes\, capturing and preserving the views that have been seen over the years by so many. On location I work in pastels. I focus on that specific time of day. The time of day changes the light\, the color\, the atmosphere: it changes everything. Pastels afford me the use of pure pigment. The mark each pastel makes directly from my hand to the surface is exciting. In my studio I create with encaustic\, based on my Plein Air experiences. Working with molten wax and fire has energy and spontaneity. Whether in the studio or on site each painting is a challenge to record a moment in time. \nREFUND AND CANCEL
