SUMMARY:November Reception
DESCRIPTION:Artist reception\, free and open to the public\, for two exhibits\, on view November 1st through December 15\, 2024. \nSmall Works is a group exhibit by Wallkill River Center for the Arts Artist Members.  Exhibited works are 8×10 or smaller and are comprised of a variety of media\, styles and subjects.  Due to the proximity to the holidays\, the gallery will allow buyers to take purchased work home immediately. \nJena Argenta is presenting a solo exhibit of her most recent work. The show titled LOVE LETTERS will feature work produced with funds from a 2024 Individual Artist grant.  “How do you write a love letter in American Ink? is an intentionally fraught question— but it’s also the one we’re faced with\,” states Argenta. The artist continues\, “The works presented here aren’t an answer to the question – they’re an attempt at asking. They’re a way of using multiple art forms as a way toward that asking. Works here were born in dialogue with community voices\, as well as historical\, literary\, and often banned or unrequited “lovers”. \nThe gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment.

SUMMARY:11/7/24 Montgomery Village Plein Air with Laura Martinez-Bianco
DESCRIPTION:Thursday November 7th \nNocturne \n3:00pm – 6:00pm \nat  Village of Montgomery Clinton Street Bandstand \n$50 per person\, $45 for members \nJoin me for an evening- YES an evening of plein air painting\, all levels and abilities are invited. Artists are encouraged to work in any medium they are comfortable with. \nThis class is not specifically about medium but rather about the concepts and techniques that are universal to Plein Air painting in low light situations. We will be painting under the gazebo in the village of Montgomery on Thursday\, Nov 7th from 3:00 to 6:00. The sun will be setting around 5- this is an opportunity to explore golden hour and/or nocturne painting. \nBring your easel\, your painting supplies and a painting surface. Helpful to have a sketchbook\, paper and pencil. This will be a one day event so consider the size you will be working on. \nThis 3 hour session will provide a demo\, individual instruction and critique. Please bring a snack\, water maybe a layer for the autumn chill. \nEach session will be 3 hours with a demo\, individual instruction and critique included. Please bring a snack\, water and a hat. \n \nI am drawn to landscapes\, capturing and preserving the views that have been seen over the years by so many. On location I work in pastels. I focus on that specific time of day. The time of day changes the light\, the color\, the atmosphere: it changes everything. Pastels afford me the use of pure pigment. The mark each pastel makes directly from my hand to the surface is exciting. In my studio I create with encaustic\, based on my Plein Air experiences. Working with molten wax and fire has energy and spontaneity. Whether in the studio or on site each painting is a challenge to record a moment in time. \nREFUND AND CANCEL

SUMMARY:11/2024 Beginning Watercolor with Alan Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, 10am-12pm \nNovember 3\, 10\, 17\, 24th \n$120 ($100 Members) ($90 to skip beginners day) \nThe first day of the months’ session is for anyone who is just starting out or needs more guidance. I would recommend that you attend if you’re a first time student of this class! \n\nThis beginning watercolor class will be focused on producing finished work.  I have noticed that I have learned best when following along painting with an artist\, so that is the approach this class will follow. We will produce a finished painting each week with a different subject\, and returning students are welcomed.  The approach will be to paint fast and loose\, to cover the basics of watercolor by doing them\, and hopefully to have some fun. The first day is for beginners who need to learn the starting techniques and the materials.\n\nIn the event of wonderful weather\, this class may go outside to paint! Be sure to bring sunscreen\, a sunhat\, or other item to protect you and make you comfortable.\n\n\nAlan Lewis has been painting in watercolor since 2013\, and usually paints every day.  His subjects vary from portraits to pets to landscapes\, and he enjoys painting plein air whenever possible.  His paintings are looser and more impressionistic\, rather than highly detailed\, and he has been most significantly influenced by the watercolor master Alvaro Castagnet.  A member of the Wallkill River School\, Goshen Art League\, Lower Hudson Valley Plein Air Painters\, and Northeast Watercolor\, he has also recently been awarded for art done with the Friends of the Great Swamp.\n\nStudents will bring their own supplies.\nMinimum 3 Students.\n \n\n\n\nPaper- I would recommend Strathmore 300 (or better but a little more expensive 400) series\, cold press paper.\nBrushes – A beginner kit might have 1 #10 round\, one smaller brush for detail\, and one larger flat or map brush of about an inch. It is nice to have some different sizes\, but you don’t need expensive brushes to start.\nPaint – Avoid chalky mediums like Reeves. Tubes will be easier to work with than pans.\nPalette – A watercolor palette has many wells for your paint and space to mix colors.\nOther – Not really necessary in this class\, but will be useful at home- A hairdryer\, painters tape\, paper towels\, etc.\n\n\nREFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

SUMMARY:11/02/2024 Memory Wire Bracelet Workshop with Janet Baskerville
DESCRIPTION:Saturday November 2nd \n10:00am – 12:00pm \nAt the Wallkill River Center for the Arts \n$60\, $55 Members \nCome join me and make a fun stackable memory wire bracelet for yourself or to give as a gift. This is a fun relaxed beginner class in which you will have access to colorful glass seed beads and charms to create these colorful\, stackable bracelets. \nNo special skills or tools required\, just come prepared to have some fun and learn a new skill. All supplies provided. \nArtist Statement: My ethnic heritage and experiences are my greatest influences.  I enjoy working three dimensionally\, as it is an intuitive process.  Jewelry is my passion and I like the tactile nature of combining various methods of construction\, such as forging metal\, stamping and etching metal\, wire wrapping and weaving\, beading\, resin casting and the inclusion of relic-like found objects and artifacts. I enjoy mixed-media collage and use paint\, paper\, fabric\, fibers\, resin\, wood and clay in my work as well. I am fascinated with the results when a combination of these materials and methods comes together in a completed piece to evoke a one of a kind ethnic feeling that tells a story. \nREFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

SUMMARY:Jena Argenta: Love Letters
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit of new works by Jena Argenta.  On view November 1st through December 15th.   Artists Reception Saturday\, November 9\, 2024 3-5:00 pm. Receptions are always free and open to the public.  Artist talk on December 15th.  The gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment. \nMulti-hyphenate\, language-based artist Jena Argenta will bring her most recent work in progress to Wallkill River Center for the Arts (WRCA) in stages beginning November 1\, 2024. The show titled LOVE LETTERS will feature work produced with funds from a 2024 Individual Artist grant. \n“How do you write a love letter in American Ink? is an intentionally fraught question— but it’s also the one we’re faced with\,” states Argenta. \nThe artist continues\, “The works presented here aren’t an answer to the question – they’re an attempt at asking. They’re a way of using multiple art forms as a way toward that asking. Works here were born in dialogue with community voices\, as well as historical\, literary\, and often banned or unrequited “lovers”. \n“In many parts of the world\, calligraphy is the highest art. Calligraphic forms & traditions are “love letters” in the deepest sense. In this series\, I seek to bend my own vantage point\, hand\, and English with brush\, reed\, sentiment\, and the use of empty space.” \nArgenta is a world-traveled artist\, whose vast experiences and adventures include apprenticeships in Arabic Calligraphy with Elinor Aishah Holland in NY and Ahmet Bursali in Istanbul. Her visual work has been privately and commercially commissioned internationally as well as in the US. Her Kimono designs walked the red carpet at the Fez Music Festival in Morocco. \n“We are so pleased to be able to provide gallery space for Jena to bring this unique and deeply felt work to the public. It comes to us\nin increments\, starting with several works on display during our regularly scheduled artists’ reception on November 9th and culminating in additional works and an artist’s talk (on) December 15th” says Sarah Fortner Pierson\, WRCA executive director. \n\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program\, a program of the New York Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by Arts Mid-Hudson. \n  \n

SUMMARY:10/24 Intro to Oil with Donna Prizzi
DESCRIPTION:October 29th & November 5 & 12th \nTuesdays\, 10am – 12pm \nAt the Wallkill River Center for the Arts \n$120\, $105 Members \n$130\, $115 Members to include first day painting materials \nTap into your creativity through painting!  If you ever wanted to paint\, but didn’t know where to start\, this class will introduce you to the process of painting with oil paint.  You’ll learn the fundamentals of setting up your palette\, reviewing materials\, color theory and the basic elements of painting. Each week there will be time for individual instruction.  We will be working from the still life and on occasion photographs.  So\, come join us in a friendly\, relaxed atmosphere where art is the perfect way to unwind and find the freedom to enjoy your inner creativity! \nFirst time  students may select the ticket option with materials included for the first day of class.  The additional $10 will include a canvas panel and use of paints\, brushes\, etc. The instructor will review materials with students so they will be prepared to buy their own supplies for the remaining sessions. \nBelow is a list of suggested art supplies\, if you already have oil paint and paint brushes please bring them on the first day of class and we can review your material then. \n  \nSupply List: \nOnline Stores\nwww.jerrysartarama.com \nwww.cheapjoes.com \nwww.dickblick.com\nAmazon\nLocal Stores: Newburgh Art Supply and Michaels \nSUPPORT/SURFACE:\nEither: Canvas Board or Stretched Canvas: (Sizes to choose from: 8”x10” – 9”x12” – 11”x14” ).\n* For first day have one of these recommended sizes. \nPALETTE:\nA wood palette is highly recommended over recessed and disposable palettes. The warm wood tone is better for accuracy in mixing color.\nOR:\na gray-toned paper palette. \nBRUSHES:\nOil painting requires durable brushes that will stand up to repeated use and the effects of oils\, varnishes and cleaning solvents. There are 6 different brush shapes: rounds\, flats\, brights\, filberts\, fan blenders and riggers. Bristle flats and filberts are strong and the most versatile to use. Fan blenders are used to feather wet paint and soften brushstrokes. Riggers are synthetic sable hair and are used for fine detail. It is ideal to have 2 brushes\, in 5 to 6 different sizes (ex. #2\, #4\, #6\, #8\, #10 and a few different sized fan blenders). But one of each for now is fine. Although\, If you have brushes already you can bring those in instead for now and we’ll go over them. \nPAINT:\nI recommend the use of quality oil pigments but you can use the most affordable oil paint that you can find. A student grade is fine as well. Colors for the palette are as follows :\n1- Titanium White\n2- Yellow Ochre\n3- CadmiumYellow Light\n4- Cadmium Yellow Deep\n5- Cadmium Red Light\n6- Alizarin Crimson\n7- Burnt Umber\n8- Viridian\n9- Cobalt Blue\n10- Ultramarine Blue\n11- Ivory Black\n*This numerical list is how to ‘string’ your palette using the order in which the paints appear above. \nTools and Mediums for Oil Painting: \nSmall Jar of Refined Linseed Oil \nOdorless Turpentine \nMetal or Glass Solvent Cups: to use for your mediums while painting. \n  \n \nBiography: \nDonna Prizzi was born in New York City and currently resides in the Hudson Valley.  She studied fine art at SUNY Westchester Arts Center and SUNY New Paltz.  She also studied decorative painting at the Isabel O’Neil Studio in New York.  She is an award winning and classically trained artist and has participated in many juried exhibitions\, invitational group shows\,  and plein-air paint events. \ndonnaprizzifineart.com \n  \nREFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

SUMMARY:10/26/2024 Freeform Wire Wrapped Gemstone Pendant with Janet Baskerville
DESCRIPTION:Saturday October 26th \n10:00am – 12:00pm \nAt the Wallkill River Center for the Arts \n$60\, $55 Members \nThis is a fun energetic beginner wire wrapping class in which you will learn my method of freeform wire wrapping a tumbled gemstone with silver plated wire. You will have a large assortment of colorful gemstones to choose from.
