SUMMARY:4/23/25 All-Medium Still Life Workshop with Alan Lewis
DESCRIPTION:April 23rd \n6-8pm \n$50 per student \nStill life painting is a unique experience\, sign up and give it a try\, or continue your journey. All levels and mediums welcome.  Instructor shall work in watercolor. Each class shall consist of a short lesson\, followed by each participant working individually on the evening’s still life scene. Individual attention given along the way\, concluding with group critique. Inspired by the tradition started by school founder Shawn Dell Joyce. \n  \nAlan Lewis has been painting in watercolor since 2013\, and usually paints every day.  His subjects vary from portraits to pets to landscapes\, and he enjoys painting plein air whenever possible.  His paintings are looser and more impressionistic\, rather than highly detailed\, and he has been most significantly influenced by the watercolor master Alvaro Castagnet.  A member of the Wallkill River School\, Goshen Art League\, Lower Hudson Valley Plein Air Painters\, and Northeast Watercolor\, he has also recently been awarded for art done with the Friends of the Great Swamp.\n\nStudents will bring their own supplies.\nMinimum 3 Students.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n    \n\n\nStudents will bring their own supplies. The theme is “Drawing” and all drawing mediums are welcome. \n\nDATES: \n\nSubmissions Due: June 15\, 2025\nNotification by: June 22\, 2025\nDrop-off by: Sunday\, June 29\, 2025\nOn display July 5 – August 31\, 2025\nReception: Saturday July 12\, 2025 5:00-7:00 PM\nPick-up Starts: Friday\, September 5\, 2025 12:00 PM\n\n\nAPPLICATION PROCESS: \n\nThere is no fee to apply.  If a work is accepted\, there is a $20 hang fee (Waived up to two for WRCA Artist Members)\nMax of 4 submissions per artist. Up to two will be chosen for this exhibit.\nMaximum size 36 x 36 in. A wide variety of media was in the art work and I tried to reflect that in my choices. The forest experience can be wide and varied. I enjoyed that many aspects of the forest were included in the work. Examples of water in many stages\, light\, tree species\, density verses open areas. One can be in the woods or observe it from afar. Both of these perspectives were present. SUMMARY:Marlene Lipinski: Look to the Woods
DESCRIPTION:I am a nature painter\, but contrary to the tradition I am not  interested in portraying nature from a distance in grand  panoramas and glorious vistas. My interest is in the intimate  connections we have with nature\, the ones we feel when we get  up close. The painting\, The Burr Oak: Spring\, as many of my  pieces\, comes from a series I think of as portraits: trees depicted as  family members or characters to know. I carefully select each  subject for the cultural\, historic or botanical significance. SUMMARY:Chris Gonyea: Trees\, Abstract in Nature
DESCRIPTION:I am an artist who is most commonly known for my paintings of trees. I have developed this style over the years through observation and a conscious effort to find the abstract in nature. The landscape has been a source of inspiration\, but I often attempt to reveal a deeper dynamic. Trees have emerged as the motif in which I can explore this possibility. \nThe tree\, itself\, is a living entity\, but in a way\, can be seen as a figure. A tree can become the vertical element in the horizontal landscape as in the formal figure/ground relationship. Within this context\, groupings\, dynamics and subtext occur to me as the images emerge. I try to remain fluid as the paintings develop. The rigid trunks and branches can act as a structure to improvise with and distort. I attempt to create vibrations and rhythm within my forests that may resonate with the viewer in a unique way. Another important consideration for me is the element of negative space. The limbs of trees can create connections described through the graphic line. The spaces that surround these are as significant as the forms themselves. Forms and patterns become apparent as one looks deeper into these landscapes. \nI often equate these branches to our own nervous system. I see the forest as a network that bridges the synapse and transfers energy to create a greater whole. The tree\, a figure in the landscape\, is at the same time\, the landscape itself. It is connected as much to the air as it is the earth. I wish to create an image the viewer can enter and with contemplation discover a greater consciousness. Whether you’re interested in traditional animation\, game animation\, anime\, 3D animation\, or just want to make your doodles move around with style\, this class is for you. Students will learn about the principles of animation\, and how to apply their knowledge in creative ways. They’ll see how observing the natural world can bring their animation skills to the next level. And most importantly\, it’s gonna be a lot of fun! \nAedan Ciganek is an up-and-coming animator from the Hudson Valley. He has a passion for 2D animation\, cartooning\, and character design. All the basic principles of oil painting with hands on practice. \nMaterials can be supplied * if you purchase the ‘+ materials’ and includes everything you need for the class including canvas; everyone else is expected to have all the materials on the materials list. \n*NOTE: supplied materials will be water mixable oils\, not the traditional solvent based process. \n  \nMaterials List:\nOil Painting Set up for beginners. It is nice to have some different sizes\, but you don’t need expensive brushes to start.\nPaint – Avoid chalky mediums like Reeves. DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, 10am-12pm \nJune 1\, 8\, 22\, 29th. (We are skipping Father’s Day) \n$120 ($100 Members) ($90 to skip beginners day) \nThis class will be co-ran between the new instructor and the one leaving. \nThe first day of the months’ session is for anyone who is just starting out or needs more guidance. I would recommend that you attend if you’re a first time student of this class! \n\nThis beginning watercolor class will be focused on producing finished work.  I have noticed that I have learned best when following along painting with an artist\, so that is the approach this class will follow. We will produce a finished painting each week with a different subject\, and returning students are welcomed.  The approach will be to paint fast and loose\, to cover the basics of watercolor by doing them\, and hopefully to have some fun. The first day is for beginners who need to learn the starting techniques and the materials.\n\nIn the event of wonderful weather\, this class may go outside to paint! Be sure to bring sunscreen\, a sunhat\, or other item to protect you and make you comfortable.\n\n\nAlan Lewis has been painting in watercolor since 2013\, and usually paints every day.  His subjects vary from portraits to pets to landscapes\, and he enjoys painting plein air whenever possible.  His paintings are looser and more impressionistic\, rather than highly detailed\, and he has been most significantly influenced by the watercolor master Alvaro Castagnet.  A member of the Wallkill River School\, Goshen Art League\, Lower Hudson Valley Plein Air Painters\, and Northeast Watercolor\, he has also recently been awarded for art done with the Friends of the Great Swamp.\n\nStephanie Snyder began painting in watercolor in 2022 at the Wallkill River Center for the Arts under the instruction of Alan Lewis. She enjoys painting landscapes in an impressionistic style\, and paints as often as her teaching career allows. She lists her influences as Alan Lewis\, Dusan Djukaric\, JMW Turner\, and Stanley Donwood.\n\nStudents will bring their own supplies.\nMinimum 3 Students.\n    \n\n\n\nPaper- I would recommend Strathmore 300 (or better but a little more expensive 400) series\, cold press paper.\nBrushes – A beginner kit might have 1 #10 round\, one smaller brush for detail\, and one larger flat or map brush of about an inch. It is nice to have some different sizes\, but you don’t need expensive brushes to start.\nPaint – Avoid chalky mediums like Reeves. DESCRIPTION:June 7\, 14\, 21st \nSaturday mornings at 9:30-12pm \n$90\, $80 for Members \nLive In Person – Painting with William Noonan \nFor beginner\, intermediate and advanced students. This course is conducted live in the classroom. The instructor’s main medium is oils but any painting medium is welcome in this class. \n  \nStudents are encouraged to follow their own stylistic inclinations while learning and practicing the basic rules of: drawing & painting techniques\, composition\, value\, color mixing\, color theory\, materials and supplies\, etc. \nSubject matter will range and include still life\, landscape\, portrait and figure. DESCRIPTION:Thursday June 15th \n10:00am – 12:00pm \nAt the Wallkill River Center for the Arts \nDelight in creating an elegant watercolor card based on the Japanese principle of Wabi-Sabi.Using a muted palette and simple round and flat brushes\, experiment with color fields that will serve as backdrops for your own dramatic effects. Tools like saranwrap\, scotch tape and sponges will be employed to add depth and drama. This Zen art form will allow you to live in the moment.You will discover that you can make really beautiful mistakes that you’ll be proud to send to friends. Enjoy the experience while you sip some green tea. At the end you will will be surprised by your own ingenuity. \nAll materials provided. \n  \nMonica A. Ostrow has been practicing commercial design and creative artmaking for more than 45 years in Orange County. A graduate of Wilkes University\, and a student of the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan\, she co-founded Artists Alternative\, a group devoted to non-traditional artistic methods and ideas.She has always chosen to explore unusal materials and techniques to apply to her practice.Her works have been exhibited throughout the hudson valley and she has won numerous awards.
