SUMMARY:05/2025 Beginning Watercolor with Alan Lewis
DESCRIPTION:(Last Class this Instructor will have) \nSundays\, 10am-12pm \nMay 4\, 11\, 18\, 25th \n$120 ($100 Members) ($90 to skip beginners day) \nThe first day of the months’ session is for anyone who is just starting out or needs more guidance. I would recommend that you attend if you’re a first time student of this class! \n\nThis beginning watercolor class will be focused on producing finished work.  I have noticed that I have learned best when following along painting with an artist\, so that is the approach this class will follow. We will produce a finished painting each week with a different subject\, and returning students are welcomed.  The approach will be to paint fast and loose\, to cover the basics of watercolor by doing them\, and hopefully to have some fun. The first day is for beginners who need to learn the starting techniques and the materials.\n\nIn the event of wonderful weather\, this class may go outside to paint! Be sure to bring sunscreen\, a sunhat\, or other item to protect you and make you comfortable.\n\n\nAlan Lewis has been painting in watercolor since 2013\, and usually paints every day.  His subjects vary from portraits to pets to landscapes\, and he enjoys painting plein air whenever possible.  His paintings are looser and more impressionistic\, rather than highly detailed\, and he has been most significantly influenced by the watercolor master Alvaro Castagnet.  A member of the Wallkill River School\, Goshen Art League\, Lower Hudson Valley Plein Air Painters\, and Northeast Watercolor\, he has also recently been awarded for art done with the Friends of the Great Swamp.\n\nStudents will bring their own supplies.\nMinimum 3 Students.\n \n\n\n\nPaper- I would recommend Strathmore 300 (or better but a little more expensive 400) series\, cold press paper.\nBrushes – A beginner kit might have 1 #10 round\, one smaller brush for detail\, and one larger flat or map brush of about an inch. It is nice to have some different sizes\, but you don’t need expensive brushes to start.\nPaint – Avoid chalky mediums like Reeves. Tubes will be easier to work with than pans.\nPalette – A watercolor palette has many wells for your paint and space to mix colors.\nOther – Not really necessary in this class\, but will be useful at home- A hairdryer\, painters tape\, paper towels\, etc.\n\n\nREFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

SUMMARY:Chris Gonyea: Trees\, Abstract in Nature
DESCRIPTION:I am an artist who is most commonly known for my paintings of trees. I have developed this style over the years through observation and a conscious effort to find the abstract in nature. The landscape has been a source of inspiration\, but I often attempt to reveal a deeper dynamic. Trees have emerged as the motif in which I can explore this possibility. \nThe tree\, itself\, is a living entity\, but in a way\, can be seen as a figure. A tree can become the vertical element in the horizontal landscape as in the formal figure/ground relationship. Within this context\, groupings\, dynamics and subtext occur to me as the images emerge. I try to remain fluid as the paintings develop. The rigid trunks and branches can act as a structure to improvise with and distort. I attempt to create vibrations and rhythm within my forests that may resonate with the viewer in a unique way. Another important consideration for me is the element of negative space. The limbs of trees can create connections described through the graphic line. The spaces that surround these are as significant as the forms themselves. Forms and patterns become apparent as one looks deeper into these landscapes. \nI often equate these branches to our own nervous system. I see the forest as a network that bridges the synapse and transfers energy to create a greater whole. The tree\, a figure in the landscape\, is at the same time\, the landscape itself. It is connected as much to the air as it is the earth. I wish to create an image the viewer can enter and with contemplation discover a greater consciousness. Perhaps we cannot just look at the landscape but see it more deeply and derive a deeper connection to the environment around us. \n– Chris Gonyea \n  \nChris Gonyea: Trees\, Abstract in Nature | On view May 2 – June 29\, 2025 \nGallery hours:  Friday – Sunday\, 12-5 pm\n \nReception & Meet the Artist | Saturday\, May 10\, 5 – 7 pm \n  \n  \nImage: Chris Gonyea\, ‘Solstice Sunrise’\, oil  on canvas\, 36 x 48 in.

SUMMARY:Marlene Lipinski: Look to the Woods
DESCRIPTION:I am a nature painter\, but contrary to the tradition I am not  interested in portraying nature from a distance in grand  panoramas and glorious vistas. My interest is in the intimate  connections we have with nature\, the ones we feel when we get  up close. The painting\, The Burr Oak: Spring\, as many of my  pieces\, comes from a series I think of as portraits: trees depicted as  family members or characters to know. I carefully select each  subject for the cultural\, historic or botanical significance. Through  close-up representation\, I invite the viewer to look for a long time  at an individual – a single tree – contemplate the magnificence of  its form\, the beauty of its shapes\, textures\, colors and patterns\,  and psychologically crawl into the work\, feeling the closeness and  intimacy of its habitat\, and the power of what it has given us and what we have taken away. \n– Marlene Lipinski \n  \nLook to the Woods\, Works by Marlene Lipinski  | On view May 2 – June 29\, 2025 \nGallery hours:  Friday – Sunday\, 12-5 pm\n \nReception & Meet the Artist | Saturday\, May 10\, 5 – 7 pm \n  \n

SUMMARY:Forest | Group Exhibit\, Juried by Marlene Lipinski
DESCRIPTION:Juror Marlene Lipinski’s thoughts: \n“I was impressed by the works and could have selected many more for this show. A wide variety of media was in the art work and I tried to reflect that in my choices. The forest experience can be wide and varied. I enjoyed that many aspects of the forest were included in the work. Examples of water in many stages\, light\, tree species\, density verses open areas. One can be in the woods or observe it from afar. Both of these perspectives were present. Strong skills were displayed in the art including composition\, development of form\, rending when applicable\, use of color and light and aerial perspective.” \n  \nExhibiting artists: \nSusan E Baldwin \nNell Shaw Cohen \nJama Hansonbrook \nCynthia Harris-Pagano \nDebra Howard \nJudy Howard \nRenelle Lorray \nLaura Martinez-Bianco \nPam Mather-Cathy \nJoanne Penaluna \nPolly Perkins \nChristine Perrone \nNancy Reed Jones \nMark Rosengarten \nRoberta Rosenthal \nCindy Sumerano \nJoseph Sundwall \nEmily A. SUMMARY:04/2025 Beginning Watercolor with Alan Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, 10am-12pm \nApril 6\, 13\, 20\, 27th \n$120 ($100 Members) ($90 to skip beginners day) \nThe first day of the months’ session is for anyone who is just starting out or needs more guidance.

SUMMARY:04/25 Traditional Oil Painting with Donna Prizzi
DESCRIPTION:April 2\, 9\, 16\, 23rd \nWednesdays\, 10am – 12pm \nAt the Wallkill River Center for the Arts \n$150\, $135 Members \nAll Levels Welcome \nCome explore the vibrant possibilities of oil painting through the time-honored tradition of classical painting. In this class\, you’ll gain an understanding of the varied elements that are so essential to creating a painting. We will explore composition\, value\, light color\, observation\, form\, and so much more through painting the still life and landscape. We’ll also the the mystery out of oil painting by discussing materials and the basic techniques that will hopefully make you feel confident and ready to take the plunge into the rewarding medium of oil paint. There will be individual instruction in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. \nBelow is a list of suggested art supplies\, if you already have oil paint and paint brushes please bring them on the first day of class and we can review your material then. \n  \nSupply List: \nOnline Stores\nwww.jerrysartarama.com \nwww.cheapjoes.com \nwww.dickblick.com\nAmazon\nLocal Stores: Newburgh Art Supply and Michaels \nSUPPORT/SURFACE:\nEither: Canvas Board or Stretched Canvas: (Sizes to choose from: 8”x10” – 9”x12” – 11”x14” ).\n* For first day have one of these recommended sizes. \nPALETTE:\nA wood palette is highly recommended over recessed and disposable palettes. The warm wood tone is better for accuracy in mixing color.\nOR:\na gray-toned paper palette. \nBRUSHES:\nOil painting requires durable brushes that will stand up to repeated use and the effects of oils\, varnishes and cleaning solvents. There are 6 different brush shapes: rounds\, flats\, brights\, filberts\, fan blenders and riggers. Bristle flats and filberts are strong and the most versatile to use. Fan blenders are used to feather wet paint and soften brushstrokes. Riggers are synthetic sable hair and are used for fine detail. It is ideal to have 2 brushes\, in 5 to 6 different sizes (ex. #2\, #4\, #6\, #8\, #10 and a few different sized fan blenders). But one of each for now is fine. SUMMARY:ART RECEPTION | WRCA Celebrates Surrealism
DESCRIPTION:Swiss Surrealist painter Kurt Seligmann was a world traveler\, who spent his final years in Sugar Loaf NY\, where visitors to his home and studio included world renowned artists Alexander Calder\, Yves Tanguy\, Marcel Duchamp\, and Max Ernst\, among many others. Among Seligmann’s students there\, were Robert Motherwell and Orange County’s own Frank Shuback. \n“As we approach the end of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Surrealism\, we are excited to showcase a selection of Seligmann’s etchings from the Seligmann Estate in Sugar Loaf here at the Wallkill River Center for the Arts (WRCA) in Montgomery NY\,” says WRCA executive director Ursula Morgan. \nThe unique exhibit\, titled Between Realms: The Visionary Etchings of Kurt Seligmann – made possible through partnership with The Seligmann Center and Vision Hudson – will also explore the artist’s place in the story of Surrealism. The Jewish Seligmann\, along with his wife Arlette\, was the first of the European Surrealists to emigrate at the start of WWII. Subsequently\, the couple were instrumental in helping to extricate a number of their fellow artists and writers from Occupied France. \n“In my position as Chair of the Seligmann Center Art Committee at Vision Hudson Valley\, I’m excited to curate and take part in this collaboration with WRCA\, which is my former work home of seven years\,” remarks Sarah Fortner.  “This exhibition was in the talking stages over a year ago and I’m pleased to be able to see it come to fruition\,” she continues. \nIn the adjacent gallery\, curators Morgan and Billy Noonan welcome Poughkeepsie born\, now Rhinebeck resident contemporary surrealist Mark Hopkins and his exhibition Hopkinesque by Mark Hopkins: Art That Thinks. \n“Mark’s work is thrilling and while vastly different from the etchings in the Seligmann exhibit\, the two artists share some remarkably similar personal traits. Like his elder predecessor\, Hopkins’ journey as an artist has taken him across the globe\, from Asia to Europe\, where he explored diverse cultures and perspectives\, integrating them into his work\,” enthuses Billy Noonan WRCA’s chief curator. \nBoth artists also expanded beyond their usual studio work to paint murals\, create illustrations\, and work in theater. Hopkins has also worked in film and graphic design. \n  \nART RECEPTION | Saturday\, March 22nd\, from 3-5 pm \nJoin us in the galleries for a reception to celebrate Surrealism\, the current exhibitions\, and to meet the artist and curators. Public invited\, admission is FREE\, light refreshments will be served. \n  \nExhibits on view through April 27\, 2025. \nGallery hours: Friday – Sunday\, Noon – 5 pm

SUMMARY:Hopkinesque by Mark Hopkins: Art That Thinks
DESCRIPTION:Mark Hopkins is a regional artist whose style has strong similarities to surrealism\, most notably Salvador Dalí. His work deals with some of the same issues the original surrealists grappled with – the alienation of modernism\, the irrationality of war\, and the study of human psychology. Like the surrealists\, Hopkins engages spontaneous\, creative processes to arrive at novel forms of imagery. Like Dali\, Hopkins’ work features recognizable objects in unrecognizable contexts to elicit an irrational and subconscious reaction or response. \nHopkins’ begins each work with stream-of-consciousness sketches that he carefully works into complex compositions for the canvas. It is only during the painting process that he fully resolves any remaining design issues. \n  \nAbout the artist: Born in Poughkeepsie\, NY\, Mark Hopkins discovered his passion for art early in life\, leading him to graduate with a BA from St. Olaf College in 1981. His journey as an artist has taken him across the globe\, from Asia to Europe\, where he explored diverse cultures and perspectives\, integrating them into his work. Over the decades\, he has painted murals\, created illustrations\, and worked in theater\, film\, and graphic design. Now based in Rhinebeck\, NY\, he focuses on studio work that reflects a lifetime of travel and creative exploration. His art blends realism with abstraction\, influenced by everything from Thai and Balinese culture to modern American life\, seeking to capture the essence of human connection and spirit. \n  \nHopkinesque by Mark Hopkins: Art That Thinks | March 14 – April 27\, 2025 \nReception and meet the artist: Saturday\, March 22nd\, 3 – 5 pm \nGallery hours:  Friday – Sundays\, 12-5 pm \n  \n     \n  \nhttps://www.hopkinesque.com/
