DESCRIPTION:Flux & Form: Wax as a Material\nCurated by Alaina Enslen \nMarch 28 – May 10\, 2026  \n\nThis group exhibition brings together contemporary artists working with wax as a primary material\, many drawing from the ancient encaustic tradition. One of the oldest known painting methods\, encaustic has been used for centuries\, yet continues to evolve through contemporary practices. DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, 10 am – 12 pm \nApril 5\, 12\, 19\, 26 \n$120\, $100 Members ($90 skip Intro. Day) \n\nThe first day of the month’s session – 4/5/26 – is for anyone who is just starting out or would like additional guidance. Attendance is recommended if you are a first-time student of this class. \n  \nThis beginning watercolor class will be focused on producing finished work. \nMany learn best when following along painting with an artist\, so that is the approach this class will follow. We will produce a finished painting each week with a different subject\, and returning students are welcomed.  The approach will be to paint fast and loose\, to cover the basics of watercolor by doing them\, and hopefully\, to have some fun. \n  \nStephanie Snyder began painting in watercolor in 2022 at the Wallkill River Center for the Arts under the instruction of Alan Lewis. She enjoys painting landscapes in an impressionistic style\, and paints as often as her teaching career allows. She lists her influences as Alan Lewis\, Susan Djukaric\, JMW Turner\, and Stanley Donwood. \n  \nStudents are to bring their own supplies.  Specific recommendations will be discussed in the first class\, so bring what you already have rather than purchasing anything before that class. \nPaper- cold press paper recommended (100% cotton)\nBrushes – 3 basic brushes: #10 round\, a smaller brush for detail\, a larger quill brush (size 6) or mop brush of about an inch\nPaint – Avoid chalky mediums. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday afternoons\, 1-3 pm \nApril 7\, 14\, 21 and 28 \nAt Wallkill River Center for the Arts\n\n$160\, $140 Members\n\nThis class is for anyone who has always wanted to paint with acrylic but was intimidated by the more advanced classes. This class is meant to be a gathering of likeminded artists who want the joy of painting in a group atmosphere.\nAll levels welcome. For beginners\, we will cover all the beginner fundamentals of painting including supplies\, mixing color\, how to use brushes\, creating a good composition\, how to pick a subject\, identifying a focal point etc. For more advanced students\, there will be one on one time with the instructor to go over your piece and suggested guidance. \n\nYour piece will be worked on for multiple days\, don’t fret if it doesn’t finish the first day!\n\n\nFor beginners\, a picture will be posted in the Wallkill River Center for the Arts facebook group by Nancy that will be what you’ll be working off of\, please be sure to print off that image in color. Limited copies may be available. For more advanced students\, you’re encouraged to bring your own references or works in progress to work on.\nStudents will bring their own supplies. She studied oil painting at the Huntington Arts League on Long Island. Nancy had her own mural business for many years and has painted murals in one of the Vanderbilt homes on Long Island. Nancy painted murals for the cancer patients in hospitals on Long Island where they were used for guided imagery to take away the patients pain.\nShe came to live in the Hudson Valley in 2004 and joined the Wallkill River School of Art where she now teaches acrylic workshops and plein air painting. SUMMARY:Mixed Media and Collage with Jodi Doster
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday evenings\, 6:00 – 8:00 pm \nApril 7\, 14\, 21 \n$125\, $110 Members (materials included) \n  \nIn this mixed media class\, we will use a variety of techniques and mediums to create unique pieces of art. Students will learn the elements and principles of design to create works that will include collage\, drawing\, painting as well as other mediums. Explore drawing materials\, acrylic\, watercolor\, ink\, gelli plate prints\, and tempera paint; learn techniques to incorporate oil pastels\, color pencils\, markers\, drawing pencils\, and painted papers into mixed media pieces. \nClass will include creating a mixed media painting on canvas. Utilizing painted and gelli print papers\, these papers will be used as accents collage on their canvas and other pieces of mixed media drawings\, painting or journal pages. This class is open to adults and teens (14+ is recommended). Materials are provided\, but if you have materials you want to use\, please bring them with you. All the basic principles of oil painting with hands on practice. \nMaterials can be supplied * if you purchase the ‘+ materials’ and includes everything you need for the class including canvas; everyone else is expected to have all the materials on the materials list. \n*NOTE: supplied materials will be water mixable oils\, not the traditional solvent based process. \n  \nMaterials List:\nOil Painting Set up for beginners. DESCRIPTION:Saturday mornings\, 9:30 am – 12 pm \nApril 11\, 18\, 25 \n$120\, $105 for Members \n  \nFor beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced students. The instructor’s main medium is oils but any painting medium is welcome in this class. \nStudents are encouraged to follow their own stylistic inclinations while learning and practicing the basic rules of: drawing & painting techniques\, composition\, value\, color mixing\, color theory\, materials and supplies\, etc. \nSubject matter will range and include still life\, landscape\, portrait and figure. Whenever feasible students will work from life\, other times photographic references may be used.  Students may also use this class as an independent-study opportunity and work on their own personal projects. \nAll sessions will be live work sessions. Mixable with water\, matte acrylic medium and acrylic retarder to slow the drying. Focus on spring and early summer plants\, insects\, animals\, birds and landscape. Neil has toured worldwide across the US\, Mexico\, Canada and Europe. \nNeil has been involved with Modern Dance Choreographers for 40 years\, teaches master classes in electronic music production and heads the Ableton Hudson Valley User Group. In 2015 Neil was awarded Individual Artist of the Year by the Orange County Arts Council and is endorsed by Moog Music. \nHe has worked with The Mahavishnu Project\, Rez Abasi\, Judi Silvano\, Gunter Hampel\, Joe Lovano\, Marty Balin\, Corey Glover\, and more. \nRecent recordings include “Check Your Vibration”(Nail Jung)\, “Solos/Duos/Trios”(Neil Alexander)\, a solo piano performance of the “Rite of Spring”(2013)\, and NAIL Live at the Blue Note\, NYC. \n  \nCRAIG CHIN \nERRANT SPACE – AMBIENT SOUNDSCAPES is a project of composer/recordist Craig Chin. Its goal is spatio-temporal dilation through sound. Performances are site-specific\, spontaneous compositions influenced by both the physical characteristics of the space they are performed in and the occupants of that space. \nCraig creates soundscapes that are simultaneously unobtrusive and interesting\, creating an atmosphere where the environment and audience are enveloped in a sort of subliminal soundscape. \nBrian Eno coined the term Ambient Music in the 1970’s\, defining it as music that “must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting.” This is the essence of the Errant Space philosophy. \nCraig produces the monthly Errant Space Podcast featuring experimental and electronic musicians and curates several music series\, including a monthly electronic and experimental night and the Space Out\, Outside series. He also has a weekly radio show\, The Space Program\, on Vassar College’s Station WVKR. \n  \n  \nADAM HOLQUIST \nONEWAYNESS – podcast focused on the arts\, politics\, and current events – is Adam Holquist\, a composer\, musician\, sound designer\, and multimedia creator from Erie\, Pennsylvania. \nHe uses guitars\, pianos\, analog and digital synthesis\, spoken word and field recordings\, and a variety of hardware and software tools to create atmospheric and textural music which draws influence from a variety of sources. \nSince 2011\, he has given hundreds of live performances and released over 40 albums and EP’s. His work has been featured on both terrestrial and streaming radio stations\, charted on Zone Music Reporter’s weekly Top 100 ambient music airplay charts\, and reviewed by publications in the US and abroad. \nAdam has created original music and sound design for theatre\, independent films\, art installations and also serves as curator of the ElectroFLUX Experimental Music Series\, presenting creative music from local to international artists. \n  \n\n\n_______________ \n  \nWRCA’s 2026 concert series has been made possible thanks to the following: \n  \n \n  \n \n \n \n \n \nWallkill River Center for the Arts programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

My pictorial narratives are personal\, yet the symbols I use are universal and interplay with larger social\, racial\, ancestral\, economic\, and political histories that inform our nation to this day. The history of my family is the history of black Americans\, which is the history of all of North America. \nIn my works\, I often combine acrylic paint with an array of found\, made\, and purchased papers. The materials I use are conceptual statements on this legacy of an often-overlooked portion of society that made something out of nothing. \nBoth my representational and abstract works incorporate a variety of symbols\, patterns\, and marks to create powerful images filled with the rhythmic properties of music that weave throughout my oeuvre. Born in a generation infused by soul and R&B music\, I grew up hearing rap music that freely sampled the music of my childhood\, mixing and recomposing these songs to create rhythms befitting to hip hop music. In my work\, my natural instinct is to paint and collage on the same surface\, applying the same spontaneity of hip hop deejays and the resourcefulness of rural quilters\, who use what is at hand\, assembling\, collaging\, and creating. \nWhile made of the energy of contemporary culture\, my work is also influenced by Abstract Expressionism and draws from the soulfulness of the quilts from the women of Gee’s Bend. For me\, there is a visual rhythm to layering these antipodes: found versus purchased objects\, figures versus abstract\, paint versus paper\, busy versus quiet. My work aims to imbue each piece with a lyrical yet authentic resilience borne of limited resources and frugality that speaks to the struggle and hope\, pain\, joy\, and soul of folks in the black community. \n–​ \nA graduate from Pratt Institute\, Ransome served as a tenured professor in the School of Visual Performing Arts at Syracuse University before retiring to pursue his dreams of being a studio artist. DESCRIPTION:Janine Lambers: Reaching Across\nMay 16 – June 22\, 2026 \n\nIn this time of growing division and discontent I’d like to focus on reaching across perceived boundaries. Perceived because most of the time they are creations of our biases and delusions rather than reality. In my experience\, while these notions are part of life and help us navigate our mundane existence\, they are insignificant in the bigger picture of life. The deeper\, more mysterious quest is finding the way home to unity or paradise / nirvana. All my work comes from a spiritual source teaching love\, goodwill\, peace\, harmony and stillness.  That is the mindset I work in while creating. That is the reality I want to create. \n  \nJanine Lambers is a German born artist working from her studio in Beacon\, NY. Trained under the auspices of the German Guild Academy she graduated as a gilder and during the course of her career developed into an artist. With a deep reverence and understanding of her craft she started to create her art. Over the years Lambers has exhibited her work on occasion but mostly works on commissions such as an 18ft gilded wall mural for a private super yacht and triptychs to national and international clientele. \n\nArtist Statement:\nI started making art in my mind as long as I can remember. Yet\, the path to making ‘real’ pieces was a long one. My upbringing put emphasis on learning a skill that would guarantee a solid basis for life; and I am immensely grateful for my apprenticeship as a gilder as it has awarded me exactly that. Immigrating to the US and more specifically NYC landed me in the world of high end homes and clients that appreciate fine objects. This brought me in contact with incredible art over the years. The inspiration I feel from that is intensifying with each piece of art that springs from my mind. They express a combination of my lived experiences and learned wisdom with the ancient techniques I have honed for many years in new ways. In my ‘living paintings and living objects’ work I explore impermanence by challenging my concept of solidity and permanence. What I perceive to have a solid core or an identifiable form changes with closer inspection. What I see as a solid mass has merely a higher density. This density varies and opens up to where boundaries interweave and connect – where the different forms obscure\ninto one another. \nImpermanence is shown through the choice of different karat gold / precious metals and silver leaf. The more pure the gold leaf the less it will change its color\, the more silver content in it the more it will darken and tarnish over time. Gold symbolizes purity and eternity. Silver symbolizes the decaying aspect of nature. DESCRIPTION:Sarah Fortner: Weeds\nMay 16 – June 22\, 2026 \n\nNothing is more beautiful and alien than a close-up view of a plant. Spots and hairs\, oddly shaped caverns\, unexpected streaks of color; even the humblest daisy reveals itself as a spiral of miniature flowers\, moving from tight green buds at the center through powdery pollen to frayed brown seeds at the edges. An entire life cycle is visible in what we call a simple flower. \nBotanical studies have been a constant in my practice\, a source of both inspiration and renewal. This exhibition continues that exploration\, but focuses on the plants we’ve learned to ignore: the wild flora that populate ditches\, vacant lots\, and forest edges in Orange County\, New York.  Instead of focusing on showy flowers\, I explored the resilient\, unloved\, everyday plants we call weeds.  Rendered as oil paintings\, these plants demand the attention we typically reserve for the rare and precious.  \nAs I began photographing and drawing wild plants for this body of work\, I was dismayed to discover that a large part of my studies were of plants that were not native\, even though I had seen them my entire life.  Some\, such as purple loosestrife and Norway maple\, are considered invasive\, disrupting ecosystems and displacing species that evolved here over millennia. Still\, others\, like white clover and dandelion\, are ubiquitous and naturalized but originally came from across the ocean.  I found a new appreciation for native mountain laurel\, milkweed\, and ephemeral trout lilies\, but inevitably\, my enjoyment of the wild became more tempered.   \nThe presence of non-native plants raises uncomfortable questions. If a plant is harmful to the ecosystem\, does depicting its beauty become complicity? At what point are these plants considered part of the landscape? Are attempts to control their spread futile? I’ve turned a critical eye to my own backyard and have begun replacing ornamentals with native plants.   \nThe work focuses on intimate views of common wild plants\, exploring stems\, flowers\, seeds\, and decay with equal interest. Each work notes whether its subject is native\, naturalized\, or invasive. These weeds are everywhere\, thriving in the margins we often overlook. They’re beautiful. They’re problematic. They’re persistent. I remind myself that a weed is simply a plant deemed unwanted. \n  \nAbout the artist:  \nSarah Fortner is a multidisciplinary artist and arts administrator residing in Orange County\, New York. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area\, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art Practice from the University of California\, Berkeley\, graduating with Highest Honors in 2000.  She relocated to New York City in 2001 to pursue a Master of Fine Arts at Hunter College. Since 2008\, Fortner has been based in Orange County\, New York\, where she founded the Washingtonville Artist Collective in 2014. From 2018 to 2024\, she served as Executive Director of the Wallkill River Center for the Arts\, a nonprofit arts organization in Montgomery\, NY. Trained under the auspices of the German Guild Academy\, she graduated as a gilder. During the course of her career\, with a deep reverence and understanding of her craft\, she started to create her own works of art. SUMMARY:Three-Day Portrait Workshop: From Drawing to Oil Painting with Carl Grauer
DESCRIPTION:Saturday mornings\, 9 am – 12 pm \nMay 23\, May 30\, and June 6 \n$150\, $135 Members (includes model fee) \n  \nThis intensive three-day workshop introduces artists to the disciplined yet deeply rewarding process of creating a portrait. At the heart of our approach is the pursuit of excellence\, not as perfectionism\, but as a commitment to observation\, thoughtful execution\, and a refined finish. \n  \nDay One: Constructing the Portrait in Drawing\nWe begin with the foundations. Students will learn how to construct the head through proportion\, structure\, and anatomical understanding rather than the focus on just the features. Emphasis is placed on observation and form. Through guided demonstrations and individual feedback\, participants develop a drawing that is structurally sound in plane\, value and form and ready to serve as the blueprint for painting. \nDay Two: Translating Drawing into Oil\nWith a strong drawing established\, students transition into oil paint. The focus shifts to understanding value relationships\, color temperature\, and the handling of paint while preserving the integrity of the original construction. Instruction emphasizes how to see the portrait as interconnected planes of light and shadow\, and varied temperature of chroma is introduced. \nDay Three: Refinement and Resolution\nThe final day is dedicated to bringing the portrait to completion. Students refine edges\, unify tones\, and develop surface sensitivity while strengthening likeness and presence. Attention is given to achieving cohesion and ensuring that drawing\, value\, and color work harmoniously together. The goal is not only a finished portrait\, but a deeper understanding of process that artists can carry into their independent practice. \n  \nThroughout the workshop\, students are guided from dry media into oil painting with confidence\, relying on the fundamental skills of structure\, observation\, and color. By the end of the three days\, participants will have gained a clear methodology for approaching future work with rigor and refinement. \n  \n   \n  \n  \nBiography\nBorn: 1975\, Wilson\, Kansas\, USA \nCarl Grauer is an artist\, a painter\, and a teacher. Grauer works within the genres of realism\, impressionism\, surrealism and narrative art.  They have an intense interest in portraiture\, the figure\, queer history\, time\, the natural world\, ritualism\, mortality\, and the spiritual realm. Born in rural Kansas\, Grauer completed their bachelor’s degree in Human Biology from the University of Kansas and their MFA in Medical Illustration from the University of Michigan.  They spent two years in London studying figurative and portrait painting with several studios and garnered success showing work both nationally and internationally\, most notably for the Hudson Valley Artists 2025: Movement exhibition at the Samuel Dorsky Museum\, and exhibiting with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in London.  Grauer has also participated in the Constance Saltonstall Artist Residency\, Jentel Artist Residency\, and the Blue Mountain Artist Residency.  Currently\, they are working and living in Poughkeepsie\, New York and showing with several galleries nationally including Carrie Haddad in Hudson\, New York. \n  \nREFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

To reserve your seat\, register by purchasing a FREE ticket – at bottom of event page. \n  \n_______________ \n\n\nAbout the performer:\n Bobby Sanabria\, a graduate of the Berklee College of Music\, is an accomplished drummer\, percussionist\, composer\, arranger\, documentary film producer\, activist\, radio host\, writer and multi-Grammy nominee. He is a native Nuyorican son of the South Bronx. \nSanabria’s versatility as both a drummer and percussionist from small group to big band has become legendary. He’s performed and recorded with every major figure in the history of Latin jazz\, salsa\, and jazz\, with such legends as Dizzy Gillespie\, Tito Puente\, Mongo Santamaria\, Eddie Palmieri\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Candido\, Charles McPherson\, Larry Harlow\, Ruben Blades\, Celia Cruz\, and the Father of Afro-Cuban jazz\, Mario Bauzá (as his drummer for 9 years touring and recording on his major Grammy nominated albums). \nSanabria is the Leader of Quarteto Aché\, Sexteto Ibiano\, Ascensión\, and his Multiverse Big Band.
