SUMMARY:05/2024 Beginning Watercolor with Alan Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, 10am-12pm \nMay 5\, 12\, 19\, 26th \nThis month includes Mothers Day & Memorial Day Weekend! Sign up for the number of days you will attend! \nNo beginners day this month. \n  \n\nThis beginning watercolor class will be focused on producing finished work.  I have noticed that I have learned best when following along painting with an artist\, so that is the approach this class will follow. We will produce a finished painting each week with a different subject\, and returning students are welcomed.  The approach will be to paint fast and loose\, to cover the basics of watercolor by doing them\, and hopefully to have some fun. The first day is for beginners who need to learn the starting techniques and the materials.\n\nIn the event of wonderful weather\, this class may go outside to paint! Be sure to bring sunscreen\, a sunhat\, or other item to protect you and make you comfortable.\n\n\nAlan Lewis has been painting in watercolor since 2013\, and usually paints every day.  His subjects vary from portraits to pets to landscapes\, and he enjoys painting plein air whenever possible.  His paintings are looser and more impressionistic\, rather than highly detailed\, and he has been most significantly influenced by the watercolor master Alvaro Castagnet.  A member of the Wallkill River School\, Goshen Art League\, Lower Hudson Valley Plein Air Painters\, and Northeast Watercolor\, he has also recently been awarded for art done with the Friends of the Great Swamp.\n\nStudents will bring their own supplies.\nMinimum 3 Students.\n \n\n\n\nPaper- I would recommend Strathmore 300 (or better but a little more expensive 400) series\, cold press paper.\nBrushes – A beginner kit might have 1 #10 round\, one smaller brush for detail\, and one larger flat or map brush of about an inch. It is nice to have some different sizes\, but you don’t need expensive brushes to start.\nPaint – Avoid chalky mediums like Reeves. Tubes will be easier to work with than pans.\nPalette – A watercolor palette has many wells for your paint and space to mix colors.\nOther – Not really necessary in this class\, but will be useful at home- A hairdryer\, painters tape\, paper towels\, etc.\n\n\nREFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

SUMMARY:Amy Silberkleit: Last Winter\, Scenes and Objects from Outside
DESCRIPTION:Solo exhibit of works by Amy Silberkleit\, on view May 3\, 2024 – June 30\, 2024.  Artists Reception Saturday\, May 11\, 2024 5:00-7:00 pm.  Receptions are always free and open to the public. \nThe gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment. \nAmy Silberkleit is an artist in the Northern Catskills. Her work is based on the forests\, mountains\, roads\, trails and natural objects found near her home. The extraordinary beauty of the region\, the variety of plants\, forms and textures\, the dramatic changes from season to season are an inexhaustible source of subjects for her work.  She draws detailed landscapes on limestone blocks and hand-prints limited editions in her lithography studio. The tonal range made possible by the lithography stone’s fine texture lends itself perfectly to highly detailed representational drawings. In each piece\, she tries to capture a moment in time while showing the effect of light\, water and temperature on different elements in the landscape. Her intention is to draw the viewer in; to find a place in the landscape and observe the beauty of the natural world. An avid hiker\, she particularly enjoys walking through the forest in winter. Without leaves and undergrowth\, covered in snow\, the contours of the land are revealed. The tones and textures of the landscape stand out when they aren’t overwhelmed by the colors of other seasons. \nAmy has a B.A. in printmaking and a Certificate in Natural Science Art and Illustration from the New York Botanical Gardens. Her drawings and prints have been exhibited in juried shows\, galleries and museums.  Amy is a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists and an Active Member of The Woodstock Artists Association.

SUMMARY:Susan Siegel: Small Kingdoms
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibit of works by Susan Siegel\, on view May 3\, 2024 – June 30\, 2024 \nThe gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment. \nArtist Reception Saturday\, May 11\, 2024 5:00-7:00 pm. Receptions are always free and open to the public. \nArtist Statement: \nIn this body of work\, I draw inspiration from Mary Oliver’s poem\, “Sleeping in the Forest\,” where she alludes to the bustling activity of “Small Kingdoms” at work during the night. This poetic imagery serves as a metaphor for the delicate interplay between humanity and nature. Much like Oliver’s portrayal\, my work delves into the sublime and peaceful merging of boundaries\, inviting viewers to contemplate moments of communion\, impermanence\, and metamorphosis. \nI find my inspiration in the rich traditions of ancient art\, medieval bestiaries\, and 18th- century natural science histories. The heart of my studio practice lies in the techniques of drawing and printmaking\, encompassing drypoints\, etchings\, monotypes\, and experimental collages. By exploring the coexistence of our “Small Kingdoms\,” my art serves as a mirror to the intricate tapestry of our existence in this tragic\, mysterious\, and beautiful world. \nArtist Biography: \nSusan Siegel (b. 1964\, Los Angeles\, California) creates work that engages our connection to the natural world. Siegel holds an MFA from the New York Academy of Art in New York City (2010) with an emphasis in traditional oil painting. Her work has been exhibited in New York\, Chicago and Los Angeles\, including the Glass Gallery at Mana Contemporary\, Sotheby’s and Flowers Gallery. Her work has been featured by New American Paintings\, Hi-Fructose Magazine\, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2012 Siegel was the recipient of a studio residency at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts. She was awarded the Merit Award at the Silvermine Arts Center’s Paper 2019 exhibit curated by Jennifer Farrel\, Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In 2023 she was awarded the Woodstock Artist Association and Museum’s Annual Print Award. Siegel lives and works in the Hudson Valley. \n  \n

SUMMARY:April 27th Artist Talk with Emily Nomer & Nansi Lent
DESCRIPTION:April 27th 2024 \n3pm – 5pm \nJoin artists Nansi Lent and Emily Nomer for an afternoon of intimate discussion about their solo exhibits\, ENIGMATIC DEVOTIONS and NIGHT VISION. \nAttendees will enjoy time in the gallery as a group as each artist discusses their work and their inspirations\, the genesis of the works in the exhibit\,and their artistic process. A Q&A session with each artist will follow.\nIf you haven’t seen the exhibit yet\, we suggest arriving early to have some time to view the works before the gallery talks begin at 3PM. \nPeople always ask “How long does it take to make one of your pieces?” I don’t think I can answer that\, but I will tell you how I go about it. I hope you will come and bring your questions! – Emily Nomer \n  \nI am a ruminator with constant on-going internal dialog. I feel very connected to global humanity in that fact. Beginning mediators sometimes see this for the first time. My artwork is an outgrowth of that reality and my intention is to capture that energy\, express it and turn it into prayer. I look forward to exploring this topic and sharing my process at my upcoming Artist Talk. – Nansi Lent \nGallery hours are Friday – Sunday\, noon to 5 PM. \nThis exhibit runs through Sunday\, April 28. \nThe gallery talk and gallery visits are free and open to the general public.\nGoodwill donations are always welcome. \n  \n \nEmily Nomer worked for forty-plus years in the design business\, owning a company designing and manufacturing one-of-a-kind furniture for architects and designers in New York City. But she has been a visual artist since she could first hold a crayon. She holds a BA from Vassar College in Classical Greek\, and an MA in the same from the University of London. In 2016 she was finally able to attend art school\, and earned an MFA from the SUNY New Paltz. In 2022 she retired from her business and has devoted herself to her art full-time.  Nomer’s diverse artistic influences include Hellenistic pottery\, the Pattern and Decoration Movement\, Bauhaus designers and Russian constructivists\, amongst others. \n  \n \nNansi Lent holds a BA from Boston College in Studio Art and a Masters in Visual Arts Administration from NYU. Painting for decades\, she has exhibited widely in New York’s Hudson Valley region and beyond including The Katonah Museum of Art\, The Woodstock Artists Association and Museum\, The Coral Springs Art Museum in Florida\, Goggleworks in Reading\, PA.\, The New York Public Library\, The Starr Library inRhinebeck and in numerous co-ops and private galleries. SUMMARY:4/7/24 Spiral Suncatcher Necklace Workshop with Janet Baskerville
DESCRIPTION:Sunday \nApril 7\, 2024 \n10am – 12pm \nAt the Wallkill River Center for the Arts \n  \nCome join me for a relaxed morning creating this sparkly sun catcher pendant that can be worn around the neck\, displayed in a bright window or given as a gift. You will learn some basic wire wrapping techniques with minimal use of tools and you will have access to a large assortment of colorful glass beads. \nAll Supplies and tools included. \nArtist Statement: My ethnic heritage and experiences are my greatest influences.  I enjoy working three dimensionally\, as it is an intuitive process.  Jewelry is my passion and I like the tactile nature of combining various methods of construction\, such as forging metal\, stamping and etching metal\, wire wrapping and weaving\, beading\, resin casting and the inclusion of relic-like found objects and artifacts. I enjoy mixed-media collage and use paint\, paper\, fabric\, fibers\, resin\, wood and clay in my work as well. I am fascinated with the results when a combination of these materials and methods comes together in a completed piece to evoke a one of a kind ethnic feeling that tells a story. \n  \n  \n  \nREFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

SUMMARY:04/2024 Beginning Watercolor with Alan Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, 10am-12pm \nApril 7\, 14\, 21\, 28th \n$120 ($100 Members) ($90 to skip beginners day) \nThe first day of the months’ session is for anyone who is just starting out or needs more guidance. I would recommend that you attend if you’re a first time student of this class! \n\nThis beginning watercolor class will be focused on producing finished work.

SUMMARY:Nansi Lent: Enigmatic Devotions
DESCRIPTION:“Enigmatic Devotions” is a solo exhibit by Rhinebeck artist Nansi T. Lent.  Lent’s current work is about the collective unconscious\, the evolution of language and the urge to write. Over time the artist has invented a symbolic language that borrows from ancient symbols but represents no language system but her own\, hybrid\, created one\, that continues to evolve with each new piece she makes. The work is meant to be read as language that has no signified meaning other than the viewers interpretation. “Mine is a contemplative practice where I explore the use of ancient symbols to evolve a new paradigm. It is a search for modern abstraction\, rooted in ancient gestures of language\,” the artist explains. \nNansi Lent holds a BA from Boston College in Studio Art and a Masters in Visual Arts Administration from NYU. Her work is held in several private collections. In 2018\, she founded Womenswork.art\, a gallery in Poughkeepsie. She is an Active Member of the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum. \nThe exhibit is on view March 1\, 2024 – April 28\, 2024 \nThe gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment. \nArtist Reception Saturday\, March 9\, 2024 3:00-5:00 pm.  Receptions are always free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Emily Nomer: Night Vision
DESCRIPTION:Night Vision is a solo exhibit of work by Emily Nomer which was created between 2022-2023 in response to a period of deep loss.  “Creating beauty is both a restorative act\, and an end in itself\,” says the artist. “My process is time-consuming and repetitive; the compositions rely on proportion and balance\, with an ever-changing ‘buffet’ of motifs as prime ingredients. Color palettes suggest the mood.”  Nomer relays\, “Victor Hugo said\, ‘To love beauty is to see light.’ I aimed to create beauty from darkness.” \nThe gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment. \nArtists Reception Saturday\, March 9\, 2024 3:00-5:00 pm.  Receptions are always free and open to the public. \nEmily Nomer worked for forty-plus years in the design business\, owning a company designing and manufacturing one-of-a-kind furniture for architects and designers in New York City.
