SUMMARY:CONCERT | Thunderbird American Indian Dancers
DESCRIPTION:Wallkill River Center for the Arts is pleased to present the THUNDERBIRD AMERICAN INDIAN DANCERS as part of our 2025 music series. \n\nThe Thunderbird American Indian Dancers are the oldest resident Native American dance company in New York. The troupe was founded in 1963 by a group of ten Native American men and women\, all New Yorkers\, who were descended from Mohawk\, Hopi\, Winnebago and San Blas tribes. Some were in school at the time; all were “first generation\,” meaning that their parents had been born on reservations. They founded the troupe to keep alive the traditions\, songs and dances they had learned from their parents\, and added to their repertoire from other Native Americans living in New York and some who were passing through. Within three or four years\, they were traveling throughout the continental U.S.\, expanding and sharing their repertoire and gleaning new dances on the reservations. (A number of Thunderbird members are winners of Fancy Dance contests held on reservations\, where the standard of competition is unmistakably high.) \nSaturday\, September 6\, 5 – 7 pm\nThe Barn at Goshen Green Farm\n3301 NY Route 207\, Goshen\, NY \n  \nThis event is free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $20/person. Registration – at bottom of event page –  is strongly recommended as space is limited. Reserve you spot today! \n_____ \n\n\n\nAbout the performers:\n\n\nMembers of the Thunderbirds range in professions from teachers to hospital patient advocates\, tree surgeons and computer engineers who share a commitment to raising scholarships for young American Indian students.  Over the years\, Thunderbird works\, activities and events have assisted more than 400 students. Original members included: Louis Mofsie\, Josephine Mofsie Tarrant\, Muriel Miguel\, Gloria Miguel\, Marguarite\, Jonathan Williams and others. Swift Eagle from the Santo Domingo Pueblo and others taught the group Native American Indian culture\, dances\, songs passing down information that would have otherwise been lost. \n\nAn Important History: Preserving Native Culture Traditions \nThunderbird American Indian Dancers\, officially incorporated in 1963\, tracing its roots further back\, to a group of teenagers called the Little Eagles.  From the beginning\, keenly aware of the great diversity of tribal groups living in and around the metropolitan area — each with a very distinct cultural background — its members were determined to learn and preserve the songs and dances of their own tribes\, then to branch out and include other tribes.  Their teachers were their fathers\, mothers\, aunts\, uncles\, and cousins. Since its formation\, Louis Mofsie and the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers have visited and performed in almost all fifty states\, where they have learned from a wide variety of Indian peoples. The Thunderbirds pledged to help preserve and perpetuate the culture and traditions of the American Indian people through their songs and dances\, and their ceremonies wherever possible\, and to bring before the general public a more realistic picture and greater understanding of the American Indian people through dance performances\, lectures\, pow wows and workshops.  In fulfilling this pledge\, the Thunderbirds have shared performances and workshops in venues including: The New York World’s Fair\, Lincoln Center\, Museum of Natural History\, Heye Foundation\, Barnard College\, and The National Museum of the American Indian among others.  They have also toured throughout the United States and in Canada\, Israel and Japan. \n  \n\n  \nWRCA’s 2025 concert series has been made possible thanks to the support of: \n \n \n\n

SUMMARY:Beginning Watercolor with Stephanie Snyder | Sept. 2025
DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, 10 am – 12 pm \nSeptember 7\, 14\, 21\, 28 \n$120\, $100 Members ($90 to skip beginners day) \nThis beginning watercolor class will be focused on producing finished work. \nThe first day of the month’s session is for anyone who is just starting out and will cover basic techniques and materials. I would recommend that you attend the first class if you’re a first time student of this class. \nMany learn best when following along painting with an artist\, so that is the approach this class will follow. We will produce a finished painting each week with a different subject\, and returning students are welcomed.  The approach will be to paint fast and loose\, to cover the basics of watercolor by doing them\, and hopefully\, to have some fun. \n\n\nIn the event of wonderful weather\, this class may go outside to paint. This will be announced ahead of time.  Be sure to bring sunscreen\, a sunhat\, or other items to protect you and make you comfortable.\n\n\nStephanie Snyder began painting in watercolor in 2022 at the Wallkill River Center for the Arts under the instruction of Alan Lewis. She enjoys painting landscapes in an impressionistic style\, and paints as often as her teaching career allows. She lists her influences as Alan Lewis\, Dusan Djukaric\, JMW Turner\, and Stanley Donwood.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nStudents are to bring their own supplies.  Specific recommendations will be discussed in the first class\, so bring what you already have rather than purchasing anything before that class.\n\nPaper- cold press paper recommended (100% cotton)\nBrushes – 3 basic brushes: #10 round\, a smaller brush for detail\, a larger quill brush (size 6) or mop brush of about an inch\nPaint – Avoid chalky mediums. Tubes will be easier to work with than pans.\nPalette – A watercolor palette has many wells for your paint and space to mix colors.\nOther – Not necessary for class\, but useful at home – A hairdryer\, painters tape\, tissues\, pencils\, paper towels\, etc.\n\n\nREFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

Great way to loosen up your painting and not be so literal in your approach to color. Spark your imagination and have fun painting again! The young woman moved North and studied painting and drawing at the University of North Texas. After graduation in 1986 she began her career as an artist’s apprentice in NY’s SoHo area\, and worked in the studios of many prestigious artists including Jeff Koons\, Mark Kostabi\, and Ronnie Cutrone. Her love of the landscape called her North to the Hudson Valley\, where she began teaching a series of plein air painting classes in 2000 throughout the Hudson Valley. Her classes became so popular that she hired other artists\, and founded a plein air school with an Arts and Agricultural mission based on the historic Hudson River School.  Now in it’s 20 th year\, The Wallkill River School continues to bring cultural tourism to the Hudson Valley region through plein air painting workshops and events on local farms\, historic sites and open spaces. She is still honored as founder and on the board of directors. She teaches workshops in pastel and plein air techniques across the country\, and is endorsed by Ampersand Pastelbords who supply materials for her demos and workshops. In 2017\, she was hired by UArt to do a plein air pastel workshop. She has also worked the plein air event circuit and participated in many prestigious events around the country\, bringing home awards for her loose and colorful paintings. She recently placed 1 st in the 2018 Inverness Plein Air Festival\, and 3 rd in the Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival. Last year she placed 1st in the Quick Draw at the 2017 Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival\, and People’s Choice in the International Plein Air Paint Out 2005 in Niagara Falls.  She is a signature member of New York Plein Air Painters (NYPAP)\, and International Plein Air Painters (IPAP)\, and has been featured in many national newspapers and magazines like the New York Times\, Plein Air Magazine\, Pastel Journal Magazine\, and Tampa Bay Magazine. She has participated in many national exhibits and plein air festivals\, and is represented by galleries in NY and Florida. Her works have been widely collected by corporations and families around the world including the Georges Pompidou Museum in France and the Museum of Modern Art in NY.

SUMMARY:Beyond Beautiful Writing: The Art of the Love Letter with Jena Argenta
DESCRIPTION:3 Sunday evenings\, 5 – 7 pm \nSept. 21\, 28\, & Oct. 5 \n$125\, $110 members (includes min. materials fee) \n  \nBeyond Beautiful Writing: The Art of the Love Letter \nInterdisciplinary explorations in writing\, in calligraphies\, aesthetics\, and sensibilities. \nCalligraphy is often defined as beautiful writing. In practice\, it’s anything but. Ink reveals every hesitation\, arrogance\, hiding or turning away. Calligraphy\, while beautiful\, is also trembling & showing up for one’s shortcomings; is incremental shifts in habits in hand & in life; is a visual/historical map of intersecting languages\, sacred traditions\, & cultural legacies. Students will try out a variety of calligraphic forms—Arabic reed\, Chinese brush\, as well as hybrid tools (Arabic in the Chinese style). \nElements of calligraphic study & free-writing exercises are then used to explore ink work as a tool of listening & self-awareness. In ink\, as in writing\, as in life: Each hesitation\, impatience\, trembling\, each flight from love & toward her— each subtle arrogance- shows. However\, some of the most beautiful letters deviate & shake—revealing that tender capacity to reach & fail & reach anyway. Because missing the mark\, but carrying on in good company\, is sometimes the most beautiful thing. The aesthetic here is not first of shape or form\, but of showing up. \nThe first love letter you write will be to yourself. \n  \nAbout Jena Argenta:  \n \nhttps://www.jenaargenta.com/ \n  \nREFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

SUMMARY:Color My World: Watercolors by Ellen Joyce-Trayer
DESCRIPTION:Color My World: Watercolors by Ellen Joyce-Trayer \n  \nArtist Statement \nThese works are Experimental Watercolors which I’ve been working on this past decade. It is a form of deconstruction….breaking through edges and form to distort reality. The paint can be dripped\, splashed\, splattered\, glazed\, brushed or pulled on the paper surface. The paper is often manipulated to direct the flow of the paint. Since the results are not always in the artist’s control\, the artist must abandon control and be open to take creative detours as the painting reveals itself. \nUltimately\, it is about creating a successful painting which often means the artist must allow the painting and the paint to inform the final creation. \n  \n\nOn view October 31 – extended to December 28\, 2025\n \nGallery hours: Friday – Sunday\,  12 – 5 pm \n  \nImage: Ellen Joyce-Trayer\, Sunset in Africa\, watercolor on paper
