DESCRIPTION:July 21 – 25\, 2025 \n10am – 12pm \nGrades 1st – 6th \nPlants\, trees\, leaves\, vegetables\, fruits\, flowers\, birds\, bugs\, fish\, land\, water\, and clouds… It’s all nature! Here’s a few ideas of what I’d like to create with you: Shadow drawings of leaves and branches\, drawings of the inside of vegetables\, making a botanical illustration booklet\, painting a still-life of fruits on canvas\, drawing insects in pen and paint\, and making collage gardens… to mention a few! We’ll be using paints\, glue\, scissors\, and more. \nAll materials provided! \nI am an experienced K-12 art teacher of 28 years. I also substituted 12.5 years for art teachers K-12 in Pine Bush and Valley Central Schools\, plus 3 years teaching summer art classes at WRCA! Creating my own paintings and teaching art is a lifelong passion for me. SUMMARY:7/23/25 All-Medium Still Life Workshop with Alan Lewis
DESCRIPTION:July 23rd \n6-8pm \n$50 per student \nStill life painting is a unique experience\, sign up and give it a try\, or continue your journey. All levels and mediums welcome.  Instructor shall work in watercolor. Each class shall consist of a short lesson\, followed by each participant working individually on the evening’s still life scene. Individual attention given along the way\, concluding with group critique. Inspired by the tradition started by school founder Shawn Dell Joyce. \n  \nAlan Lewis has been painting in watercolor since 2013\, and usually paints every day.  His subjects vary from portraits to pets to landscapes\, and he enjoys painting plein air whenever possible.  His paintings are looser and more impressionistic\, rather than highly detailed\, and he has been most significantly influenced by the watercolor master Alvaro Castagnet.  A member of the Wallkill River School\, Goshen Art League\, Lower Hudson Valley Plein Air Painters\, and Northeast Watercolor\, he has also recently been awarded for art done with the Friends of the Great Swamp.\n\nStudents will bring their own supplies.\nMinimum 3 Students.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n    \n\n\nStudents will bring their own supplies. SUMMARY:08/2025 Beginning Watercolor with Stephanie Snyder
DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, 10am-12pm \nAugust 3\, 10\, 17\, 24th \n$120 ($100 Members) ($90 to skip beginners day) \n  \nThe first day of the months’ session is for anyone who is just starting out or needs more guidance. I would recommend that you attend if you’re a first time student of this class! \n\nThis beginning watercolor class will be focused on producing finished work.  I have noticed that I have learned best when following along painting with an artist\, so that is the approach this class will follow. We will produce a finished painting each week with a different subject\, and returning students are welcomed.  The approach will be to paint fast and loose\, to cover the basics of watercolor by doing them\, and hopefully to have some fun. The first day is for beginners who need to learn the starting techniques and the materials.\n\nIn the event of wonderful weather\, this class may go outside to paint! Be sure to bring sunscreen\, a sunhat\, or other item to protect you and make you comfortable.\n\n\nStephanie Snyder began painting in watercolor in 2022 at the Wallkill River Center for the Arts under the instruction of Alan Lewis. She enjoys painting landscapes in an impressionistic style\, and paints as often as her teaching career allows. She lists her influences as Alan Lewis\, Dusan Djukaric\, JMW Turner\, and Stanley Donwood.\n\nStudents will bring their own supplies.\nMinimum 3 Students.\n    \n\n\n\nPaper- I would recommend Strathmore 300 (or better but a little more expensive 400) series\, cold press paper.\nBrushes – A beginner kit might have 1 #10 round\, one smaller brush for detail\, and one larger flat or map brush of about an inch. It is nice to have some different sizes\, but you don’t need expensive brushes to start.\nPaint – Avoid chalky mediums like Reeves. Tubes will be easier to work with than pans.\nPalette – A watercolor palette has many wells for your paint and space to mix colors.\nOther – Not really necessary in this class\, but will be useful at home- A hairdryer\, painters tape\, paper towels\, etc.\n\n\nREFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

Using a limited palette\, students will learn how to simplify the vast landscape and capture the important aspects of a scene to create a successful plein air painting. All mediums welcome. instructor specializes in acrylic. \nStudents will bring their own supplies. You are advised to wear sun and bug protection for outdoor classes. Make sure you drink water and seek shade on hot days. \n  \nNancy Reed Jones is an award winning artist ( Champion of the Arts award from the Orange County Arts Council) as well as several other awards. She studied oil painting at the Huntington Arts Council on Long Island. Nancy had her own mural business for many years and has painted murals in one of the Vanderbilt homes on Long Island. Nancy painted murals for the cancer patients in hospitals on Long Island where they were used for guided imagery to take away the patients pain.\nShe came to live in the Hudson Valley in 2004 and joined the Wallkill River School of Art where she now teaches acrylic workshops and plein air painting. On view at WRCA Galleries at the historic Patchett House\, September 6 – October 26\, 2025. \n\nCall for Artwork: This exhibit is a national call\, open to all US Artists 18 years of age or older. Artwork may range from realism to non-representational abstraction; 2D and 3D works in all media are welcome; size restrictions apply. \n \n\nDescription: INTERIORS: The spaces we inhabit give us a sense of place and belonging. Interiors can be a corner of our living room\, a view out the window\, a favorite porch swing\, a messy garage. Interiors can also be a state of mind\, an inward look\, navigation of our own psyche. Interiors also exist outdoors\, nature often compartmentalizes space offering natural shelter for ourselves and other animals.  \n\nMeet the JUROR: Wayne Lempka is Art Collections Manager of the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at the State University of New York at New Paltz where he is responsible for the care of over 9\,000 objects in the museum’s permanent collection. He has also served as curator at The Dorsky for many exhibitions including Thoughts of Home\, which explored not only how our living environments reflect who we are but how artists use this idea in their creative expression. Prior to his position at The Dorsky\, Mr. Lempka held positions at Storm King Art Center\, the Museum of American Folk Art\, the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design\, (Smithsonian Institute) the Chase Manhattan Bank Corporate Art Program\, The Historic New Orleans Collection and the Barrett Art Center. Mr. Lempka is currently a lecturer in the Department of Art History at Marist University. He has also taught in the Art History Department of SUNY New Paltz. Mr. Lempka holds a BFA degree in Fine Arts and Art History from Pratt Institute\, and a MA in Art History & Museum Studies from New York University. DESCRIPTION:Saturday mornings\, 9:30 am – 12 pm \nAugust 9\, 16\, 30 (no class 8/23) \n$120\, $105 for Members \n  \nFor beginner\, intermediate and advanced students. The instructor’s main medium is oils but any painting medium is welcome in this class. \nStudents are encouraged to follow their own stylistic inclinations while learning and practicing the basic rules of: drawing & painting techniques\, composition\, value\, color mixing\, color theory\, materials and supplies\, etc. \nSubject matter will range and include still life\, landscape\, portrait and figure. Whenever feasible students will work from life\, other times photographic references may be used.  Students may also use this class as an independent-study opportunity and work on their own personal projects. \nAll sessions will be live work sessions. A lecture or demo may be included based on the particular subject matter for that month’s focus. SUMMARY:CONCERT | Steve Gorn: Music for the Healing of Mind & Body
DESCRIPTION:Wallkill River Center for the Arts is pleased to present STEVE GORN: MUSIC FOR THE HEALING OF MIND & BODY as part of our 2025 music series. \n  \nFar more than entertainment\, music is a portal for mind-body synchronization; a conduit for engagement in ritual\, group catharsis\, entertainment and a holder of mythology and history.  Steve Gorn explores The Transformative Power of Music in words and live performance. Drawing on Indian classical music this will be an offering of music for healing of the mind\, body\, and soul. \nSteve plays Bansuri Bamboo Flute and will be joined for this special collaborative concert by Naren Budhakar playing tabla percussion\, dancer Savia Berger\, and a special surprise Guest. \n  \nSunday\, August 17\, 3 – 5 pm\nWRCA Galleries at The Patchett House\n232 Ward Street\, Montgomery\, NY \n  \nThis event is free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $20/person. Registration – at bottom of event page –  is requested but not required.  \n_____ \n\n\n\nAbout the performers:\n\n\nSteve Gorn plays Indian Classical Music and new American Music on the bansuri bamboo flute in concerts and festivals throughout the world. His gurus are the late bansuri master\, Sri Gour Goswami\, of Kolkata\, and Pandit Raghunath Seth of Mumbai\, who he has often accompanied in concert. He has also studied with the late Ustad Z. M. Dagar. \nDuring the past decade Steve has often performed in India\, appearing at Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal\, Triveni Hall in New Delhi\, The Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata\, NCPA\, and The Nehru Center in Mumbai\, and numerous other venues. His performance with Pandit Ravi Shankar’s disciple\, Barun Kumar Pal\, at Kolkata’s Rama Krishna Mission\, was televised throughout India. In the New York area\, he often performs with Pandit Samir Chatterjee as well as the Darbari Ensemble with sitarist\, Allyn Miner and the sarangi master\, Ramesh Misra. \nSri Gour Goswami introduced Steve to the vocal (gayaki) style of bansuri that was first introduced by the legendary flutist\, Padmabhusan Pannalal Ghosh. As a disciple of this illustrious gharana\, the heart of Steve’s playing reflects an attention to meer and gamak and an ‘old world’ rendering of raga which unfolds timelessly and with attention to the rasa\, or color of each note and melodic contour. \nSince 1996\, Steve has continued his study under the illustrious bansuri master\, Pandit Raghunath Seth\, of Mumbai. Raghunathji’s compositions in numerous ragas\, and his performance style are now a prominent feature of Steve’s performances. \n\n  \nNaren Budhakar was born and brought up in the Indian classical music tradition. He began performing Tabla at a young age. A disciple of Tabla Maestro Ustad Shabbir Nisar\, Naren has played with prominent instrumentalists\, vocalists and dancers including Pandit Birju Maharaj\, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan\, Pandit Jasraj and Shaed Parvez. Naren is co-director of the East-West School of Music at Ananda Ashram and as a faculty member teaches and performs regularly. \n  \n  \nSavia Berger is a dancer\, actor\, choreographer and teacher based in the Catskills where she began her career with Catskill Ballet Theater. Her dance credits include Feld Ballets\, NY\, Eglevsky Ballet\, Basel Ballet (Switzerland)\, Les Danse Donsk (choreographer Mark Allen Davis) and many other independent choreographers. She was featured as an actor in Kismet and performed as a dancer in Brigadoon with the New York City Opera. She went on to study voice and acting and became a member of the original Broadway workshop of Fosse (Director Chet Walker) for a year. \nHer credits as a choreographer and improvisational dancer include Cy Tombly Dreamhouse\, a multi-media evening directed by Marilyn Crispell; collaborations with Peter and Peter (Peter Einhorn\, Peter Wetzler) and dancers; and can be seen improvising with Creative Music Studio’s (founders Karl Berger\, Ingrid Sertso\, Ornette Coleman) Creative Improvisors Orchestra every month in Kingston\, NY. \nSavia has also appeared in industrial shows and on film. She is a second generation classical Pilates instructor certified by Romana Kryzanowska and ran her own Dance and Pilates Studio in New Jersey for 8 years. DESCRIPTION:Wallkill River Center for the Arts (WRCA) is pleased to welcome Theresa Gooby and André Junget for a Gallery Talk on Saturday\, August 23 at 2 pm. \nJunget and Gooby are currently exhibiting as solo artists at the WRCA galleries in exhibitions which showcase the art of drawing. \nWRCA curator and painting instructor\, Billy Noonan explains\, “These two artists could not be more different; Andre’s work is precise elegant meticulously crafted monochromatic imagery while Theresa Gooby offers us whimsical fantastical imaginings in color that reference fashion with a nostalgic flare.” \nUrsula Morgan\, WRCA Executive Director will moderate a meeting of the minds of these two featured artists\, as they discuss their work\, their process\, specific pieces in the show\, as well as entertain questions from attendees. \nThe public is invited to arrive early and enjoy the exhibit by each of these artists along with the accompanying group show titled DRAWING. \nNoonan relates\, “The group exhibition features the works of 13 artists and showcases the art of drawing in an array of contrasting expressions. Nancy painted murals for the cancer patients in hospitals on Long Island where they were used for guided imagery to take away the patients pain.\nShe came to live in the Hudson Valley in 2004 and joined the Wallkill River School of Art where she now teaches acrylic workshops and plein air painting. If you ask a child to draw a room interior\, in most cases this is what you will get. However\, the meaning of ‘interiors’ is not an easy concept to isolate as it encompasses a broad sphere of emotional experiences\, sensory perceptions\, memories and feelings of nostalgia. \nThe works selected for this exhibition not only fulfill the basic idea of what an interior is but go beyond this concept due to how each artist approaches these spaces – as seen through unique interior or exterior vantage points. These works are not simply documents of what one holds dear in interior spaces but records a sense of life; a sense of being; and a sense of place. \nTaken as a whole\, this exhibition is meant to be a visual investigation into beauty\, personal narrative\, and memory. These paintings\, mixed media pieces\, and photographs provide one with a sense of humor\, power\, weakness\, and mystery. As a viewer\, you are asked to consider an entire range of visual and emotional experiences that room interiors invoke in each of us and then relate these experiences to one’s personal space. \n– Wayne Lempka \n  \nMeet the JUROR: Wayne Lempka is Art Collections Manager of the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at the State University of New York at New Paltz where he is responsible for the care of over 9\,000 objects in the museum’s permanent collection. He has also served as curator at The Dorsky for many exhibitions including Thoughts of Home\, which explored not only how our living environments reflect who we are but how artists use this idea in their creative expression. Prior to his position at The Dorsky\, Mr. Lempka held positions at Storm King Art Center\, the Museum of American Folk Art\, the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design\, (Smithsonian Institute) the Chase Manhattan Bank Corporate Art Program\, The Historic New Orleans Collection and the Barrett Art Center. Mr. Lempka is currently a lecturer in the Department of Art History at Marist University. He has also taught in the Art History Department of SUNY New Paltz. Mr. Lempka holds a BFA degree in Fine Arts and Art History from Pratt Institute\, and a MA in Art History & Museum Studies from New York University. SUMMARY:Painted Papers and Printmaking with Jodi Doster
DESCRIPTION:Saturday mornings\, 10:30 am – 1 pm \nSeptember 6\, 12\, 20 \nAges 16+ \n$130\, $115 Members (includes materials fee) \nThis painted paper printmaking course introduces a range of techniques and materials\, including gelli plate printing\, linoleum cuts\, and various other printmaking processes. Participants will work with gelli plates to produce multi-layered\, colorful\, and textured monoprints. The curriculum covers essential methods such as paint application\, utilizing textural tools\, and creating images with stencils\, stamps\, and botanicals—all achievable without a large press. \nThe fundamentals of linoleum cut printmaking are also addressed\, emphasizing the significance of positive and negative space in print design. Students will sketch their concepts\, transfer them to printing blocks for carving\, and use a variety of sources for inspiration. Techniques include carving into soft linoleum\, impressing designs onto Styrofoam or foam board\, and transferring images to different surfaces using ink or paint. \nAdditionally\, students may explore styles such as Andy Warhol’s by employing two or three linoleum blocks\, working with both positive and negative carvings\, or applying the multiple block method. The use of colored inks and acrylic paints\, combined with registration techniques\, ensures precise and vibrant results. The course further explores an array of printmaking techniques and tools that can be incorporated into mixed media projects\, collage\, card making\, and art notebooks. \n  \nThere is no material list – class includes all materials. \n This class is suitable for people aged 16+ since we will be using sharp cutting tools. \n  \n \n \nMy name is Jodi Doster and I spent 21 years teaching science and art at Bristol Bay Borough Middle/High School in Naknek\, Alaska. I also was an Adjunct Professor for the University of Alaska Fairbanks BBC teaching biology and many art classes including watercolor\, drawing\, and ceramics. My teaching philosophy is a hands-on approach utilizing demonstration then working alongside students to create original pieces. I find working alongside students while discussing my process and thoughts helps students if they are stuck. I provide guidance to help students with learning new techniques and developing their own style. I am influenced by science and nature in my own artwork. I love color and have been inspired by the impressionism artists. DESCRIPTION:Wallkill River Center for the Arts is pleased to present the THUNDERBIRD AMERICAN INDIAN DANCERS as part of our 2025 music series. \n\nThe Thunderbird American Indian Dancers are the oldest resident Native American dance company in New York. The troupe was founded in 1963 by a group of ten Native American men and women\, all New Yorkers\, who were descended from Mohawk\, Hopi\, Winnebago and San Blas tribes. Some were in school at the time; all were “first generation\,” meaning that their parents had been born on reservations. They founded the troupe to keep alive the traditions\, songs and dances they had learned from their parents\, and added to their repertoire from other Native Americans living in New York and some who were passing through. Within three or four years\, they were traveling throughout the continental U.S.\, expanding and sharing their repertoire and gleaning new dances on the reservations. (A number of Thunderbird members are winners of Fancy Dance contests held on reservations\, where the standard of competition is unmistakably high.) \nSaturday\, September 6\, 5 – 7 pm\nThe Barn at Goshen Green Farm\n3301 NY Route 207\, Goshen\, NY \n  \nThis event is free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $20/person. Reserve you spot today! \n_____ \n\n\n\nAbout the performers:\n\n\nMembers of the Thunderbirds range in professions from teachers to hospital patient advocates\, tree surgeons and computer engineers who share a commitment to raising scholarships for young American Indian students.  Over the years\, Thunderbird works\, activities and events have assisted more than 400 students. Original members included: Louis Mofsie\, Josephine Mofsie Tarrant\, Muriel Miguel\, Gloria Miguel\, Marguarite\, Jonathan Williams and others. Swift Eagle from the Santo Domingo Pueblo and others taught the group Native American Indian culture\, dances\, songs passing down information that would have otherwise been lost. \n\nAn Important History: Preserving Native Culture Traditions \nThunderbird American Indian Dancers\, officially incorporated in 1963\, tracing its roots further back\, to a group of teenagers called the Little Eagles.  From the beginning\, keenly aware of the great diversity of tribal groups living in and around the metropolitan area — each with a very distinct cultural background — its members were determined to learn and preserve the songs and dances of their own tribes\, then to branch out and include other tribes.  Their teachers were their fathers\, mothers\, aunts\, uncles\, and cousins. Since its formation\, Louis Mofsie and the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers have visited and performed in almost all fifty states\, where they have learned from a wide variety of Indian peoples. The Thunderbirds pledged to help preserve and perpetuate the culture and traditions of the American Indian people through their songs and dances\, and their ceremonies wherever possible\, and to bring before the general public a more realistic picture and greater understanding of the American Indian people through dance performances\, lectures\, pow wows and workshops.  In fulfilling this pledge\, the Thunderbirds have shared performances and workshops in venues including: The New York World’s Fair\, Lincoln Center\, Museum of Natural History\, Heye Foundation\, Barnard College\, and The National Museum of the American Indian among others.  They have also toured throughout the United States and in Canada\, Israel and Japan. \n  \n\n  \nWRCA’s 2025 concert series has been made possible thanks to the support of: \n \n \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, 10 am – 12 pm \nSeptember 7\, 14\, 21\, 28 \n$120\, $100 Members ($90 to skip beginners day) \nThis beginning watercolor class will be focused on producing finished work. \nThe first day of the month’s session is for anyone who is just starting out and will cover basic techniques and materials. I would recommend that you attend the first class if you’re a first time student of this class. \nMany learn best when following along painting with an artist\, so that is the approach this class will follow. We will produce a finished painting each week with a different subject\, and returning students are welcomed.  The approach will be to paint fast and loose\, to cover the basics of watercolor by doing them\, and hopefully\, to have some fun. \n\n\nIn the event of wonderful weather\, this class may go outside to paint. This will be announced ahead of time.  Be sure to bring sunscreen\, a sunhat\, or other items to protect you and make you comfortable.\n\n\nStephanie Snyder began painting in watercolor in 2022 at the Wallkill River Center for the Arts under the instruction of Alan Lewis. She enjoys painting landscapes in an impressionistic style\, and paints as often as her teaching career allows.
