SUMMARY:Elizabeth Keithline: Puzzle
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Keithline: Puzzle\nAugust 22 – September 27\, 2026 \n\nArtist Elizabeth Keithline presents Puzzle\, a solo exhibition of assemblage artworks using found paint and materials. \nPuzzle is a follow-up to Breaking Broken\, Keithline’s previous solo show\, which explored human tendencies toward self-destruction and fragmentation. Puzzle pivots to examine how people create system of order out of chaos\, how they solve problems and navigate life’s challenges.  \nThe show continues Keithline’s longstanding exploration of human self-extension through systems such as architecture\, technology\, cars\, and the modern built environment—especially as these systems relate to the natural world. \nIn addition to her solo show\, Keithline will jury a companion exhibition in WRCA’s main galleries titled Keep It Together\, featuring assemblage-based artwork that conveys a material and conceptual sense of solving and/or coping. \n  \nAbout the artist:\nElizabeth Keithline has been a weaver since the age of 14. In 1996\, she pioneered a unique sculpture technique: weaving heavy-gauge wire around large objects and then burning them out. Her artistic practice now includes painting\, public art\, and installation work. Keithline is fascinated by abstraction—how far ideas can stretch\, how many multiples of a single thought can be expressed\, and how viewers engage with abstraction as they perceive an idea and then carry it away with them. \nPuzzle marks Keithline’s 23rd solo exhibition and Keep It Together will be her 23rd juried or curated group show. SUMMARY:Keep It Together\, A Regional Exhibition Juried by Elizabeth Keithline
DESCRIPTION:Keep It Together\nA Regional Exhibition Juried by Elizabeth Keithline\nAugust 22 – September 27\, 2026 \n  \nIn addition to solo show Puzzle\, this companion exhibit juried by Elizabeth Keithline features assemblage-based artwork that conveys a material and conceptual sense of solving and/or coping. \n  \nJuror Statement \nAssemblage is art that is made by assembling disparate elements—often everyday objects—scavenged by the artist or bought specially. Tate Museum \nIn a way\, one could say that we start our first puzzle when egg and sperm find each other and we end it when we die and our bodies fit back into the earth. In between\, it seems we’re pretty much continually trying to solve issues both big and small:  \nWe’re out of milk again. Who will go to the store?  \nMy car died. Who can take me to the airport? \nIt’s hot out. How can we cool down the planet?  \nOur country is at war. How can we find peace? \nMany pieces in this show express how artists are coping\, as well as solving\, these issues. Melissa Stern’s PINK LEG shows assembly and fit through absence. The person she creates is barely there\, yet she is literally still kicking. Lucy Handley’s Prosperity puzzles together a shrine to wealth and comfort\, while giving off a beautiful Miss-Havisham-dustiness.  \nThrough small acts of repetition\, Jeannine Bardo’s Dawn No. 45 seems to express a wish to stitch the days together into an orderly and cohesive whole. Similarly\, Jennifer McGregor’s Thetford Interlude gathers and reuses wool as a sort of clock or chronicle of life. Melanie Delgado’s excellently titled Another Load Of Laundry evokes a calendar of another type\, that of messy\, ceaseless labor. Linda Stillman’s piece Maples On The Move continues her long history as an artist who pieces together an ever-changing natural world.   \nWith this show\, I hope to express an appreciation for how human beings continue to think their way forward despite challenges. \n \nExhibiting artists: Julia Barbour\, Jeannine Bardo\, Jenne Currie\, Melanie Delgado\, Tasha Depp\, Karen E. Using a limited palette\, students will learn how to simplify the vast landscape and capture the important aspects of a scene to create a successful plein air painting. All mediums welcome\, instructor specializes in acrylic. \nStudents will bring their own supplies. You are advised to wear sun and bug protection for outdoor classes. Make sure you drink water and seek shade on hot days. \n  \nNancy Reed Jones is an award winning artist\, receiving the Champion of the Arts award from the Orange County Arts Council as well as several other awards. She studied oil painting at the Huntington Arts Council on Long Island. Running her own mural business for many years\, special projects include murals in the Vanderbilt homes on Long Island and murals for cancer patients in hospitals which were also used for art therapy. She came to live in the Hudson Valley in 2004 and joined the Wallkill River School of Art where she now teaches acrylic workshops and plein air painting. DESCRIPTION:Thursdays\, 1 – 3 pm \nSeptember 3\, 10\, 17\, 24 \nAt Wallkill River Center for the Arts\n\n$160\, $140 (Members)\n\n\n\nThis class is for folks with little to no knowledge of painting. We start with the very basics: How to use the different brushes\, how to mix paint (color theory)\, creating a good composition\, and all the fundamentals you will need to go forward in becoming a  confident painter.\n\nThere is a supply list that will give you everything needed to begin.\nTake your first step to becoming an artist!\n\nSupply List For Acrylic Class: \n\nPaints; Grumbacher or Windsor and Newton tube acrylics.\nBasic Colors: Titanium White\, Ultramarine Blue\, Burnt Umber\, Alizarin Crimson\, Cadmium Yellow Light.\nBrushes: 1 inch flat\, 1/2 inch flat\, small filbert ( rounded tip) small round and #0 or # 1 liner brush\n11 x 14 in. or 12 x 16 in. canvas\, a couple. We will likely work on a piece multiple sessions.\nWet palette with palette paper and sponge that comes with it. DESCRIPTION:Sunday mornings\, 10 am – 12 pm \nSeptember 6\, 13\, 20\, 27 \n$120\, $100 Members ($90 skip Intro. Day) \n\nThe first day of the month’s session – 09/6/26 – is for anyone who is just starting out or would like additional guidance. Attendance is recommended if you are a first-time student of this class. \nThis watercolor class will be focused on producing finished work. \nMany learn best when following along painting with an artist\, so that is the approach this class will follow. We will produce a finished painting each week with a different subject\, and returning students are welcomed.  The approach will be to paint fast and loose\, to cover the basics of watercolor by doing them\, and hopefully\, to have some fun. \n  \nStephanie Snyder began painting in watercolor in 2022 at the Wallkill River Center for the Arts under the instruction of Alan Lewis. She enjoys painting landscapes in an impressionistic style\, and paints as often as her teaching career allows. She lists her influences as Alan Lewis\, Susan Djukaric\, JMW Turner\, and Stanley Donwood. \n  \nStudents are to bring their own supplies.  Specific recommendations will be discussed in the first class\, so bring what you already have rather than purchasing anything before that class. \nPaper- cold press paper recommended (100% cotton)\nBrushes – 3 basic brushes: #10 round\, a smaller brush for detail\, a larger quill brush (size 6) or mop brush of about an inch\nPaint – Avoid chalky mediums. Participants will work with a mid-range white cone 5/6 clay\, which will be oxidation fired in an electric kiln. Mosaic is an art form that has been around since Mesopotamia in the 3rd Millennium BC. The mosaic is an assemblage of pieces (beads or tiles for this class) to create a piece of art. Mosaics come in many forms from murals\, to installations\, or a wall hanging. \nIn this class students will use a variety of specialty and Mardi Gras beads and/or tiles to create their own piece of mosaic art. Students will create a drawing or design\, choose colors that coordinate with the colors of beads and tiles available\, paint a piece of foam board or cut out plywood for tile mosaics\, then use adhesive to glue down their beads and weld bond for tiles. \nFoam boards and cut outs will be painted using the process of mixing colors before beads are attached. Students can work from a mix of photographs\, magazines\, or even floral arrangements to come up with a drawing or design that will be interpreted with beads and tiles. Nancy painted murals for the cancer patients in hospitals on Long Island where they were used for guided imagery to take away the patients pain.\nShe came to live in the Hudson Valley in 2004 and joined the Wallkill River School of Art where she now teaches acrylic workshops and plein air painting. The young woman moved North and studied painting and drawing at the University of North Texas. After graduation in 1986 she began her career as an artist’s apprentice in NY’s SoHo area\, and worked in the studios of many prestigious artists including Jeff Koons\, Mark Kostabi\, and Ronnie Cutrone. Her love of the landscape called her North to the Hudson Valley\, where she began teaching a series of plein air painting classes in 2000 throughout the Hudson Valley. Her classes became so popular that she hired other artists\, and founded a plein air school with an Arts and Agricultural mission based on the historic Hudson River School.  Now in it’s 20 th year\, The Wallkill River School continues to bring cultural tourism to the Hudson Valley region through plein air painting workshops and events on local farms\, historic sites and open spaces. She is still honored as founder and on the board of directors. She teaches workshops in pastel and plein air techniques across the country\, and is endorsed by Ampers and Pastel boards who supply materials for her demos and workshops. In 2017\, she was hired by UArt to do a plein air pastel workshop. She has also worked the plein air event circuit and participated in many prestigious events around the country\, bringing home awards for her loose and colorful paintings. She recently placed 1st in the 2018 Inverness Plein Air Festival\, and  rd in the Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival. Hat\, sunscreen\, & bug repellent if needed. \n  \nAbout Shawn Dell Joyce: \nShawn Dell Joyce was raised on her family’s citrus farm in the Rio Grande Valley. The young woman moved North and studied painting and drawing at the University of North Texas. After graduation in 1986 she began her career as an artist’s apprentice in NY’s SoHo area\, and worked in the studios of many prestigious artists including Jeff Koons\, Mark Kostabi\, and Ronnie Cutrone. Her love of the landscape called her North to the Hudson Valley\, where she began teaching a series of plein air painting classes in 2000 throughout the Hudson Valley. Her classes became so popular that she hired other artists\, and founded a plein air school with an Arts and Agricultural mission based on the historic Hudson River School.  Now in it’s 20 th year\, The Wallkill River School continues to bring cultural tourism to the Hudson Valley region through plein air painting workshops and events on local farms\, historic sites and open spaces. She is still honored as founder and on the board of directors. She teaches workshops in pastel and plein air techniques across the country\, and is endorsed by Ampersand Pastelbords who supply materials for her demos and workshops. In 2017\, she was hired by UArt to do a plein air pastel workshop. She has also worked the plein air event circuit and participated in many prestigious events around the country\, bringing home awards for her loose and colorful paintings. This session is recommended for intermediate/advanced watercolor artists or individuals who have taken the class previously. \nThis watercolor class will be focused on producing finished work. \nMany learn best when following along painting with an artist\, so that is the approach this class will follow. We will produce a finished painting each week with a different subject\, and returning students are welcomed.  The approach will be to paint fast and loose\, to cover the basics of watercolor by doing them\, and hopefully\, to have some fun. \n  \nStephanie Snyder began painting in watercolor in 2022 at the Wallkill River Center for the Arts under the instruction of Alan Lewis. She enjoys painting landscapes in an impressionistic style\, and paints as often as her teaching career allows. DESCRIPTION:John McGiff: Painting as Vision\nNovember 14 – December 20\, 2026 \n  \nI make images to help map the terrain of the journey I find myself on and figurative narratives are my chosen stage. \nI am naturally inclined towards making series of paintings that are bound by a central narrative idea that often stems from an old story. A reoccurring theme in my work is about the individual journey from innocence to loss to redemption. This is a culturally charged tale and by retelling some of the Greek myths\, I benefit from working with archetypal narratives that are capable of shifting in their focus and\, therefore\, quite elastic in the vision that they imply. \nWhat\, for example\, would Icarus do if he had landed differently and had a second chance at building a life? If Acteon was made to fall asleep by Diana’s pool\, a prelude to his prescribed fate\, what parade of figures would haunt and tantalize his dreams? How did the abduction of Persephone by Hades inform her adulthood and rebirth? This emphasis on one’s ability to transform experience in positive ways is the alchemy I seek from my painting practice \nThe figure is central to the compositions I make in the studio\, as is color and the thrill of moving through pictorial space.
