DESCRIPTION:INTERIORS\, A National Exhibition Juried by Wayne Lempka\, Art Collections Manager at The Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz\, on view September 5 – October 26\, 2025. \nParticipating artists: Richard Arnold\, Donna Faranda\, Carl Grauer\, Yona Gonen\, Lonna Kelly\, Pat MacDonald\, Karen Maloof\, Dan McCormack\, Emilia Moritz\, Mary-Anne Ramirez\, Steven Rushefsky\, Gerald Wein\, Anna West\, Amanda Wolf \nJUROR’S STATEMENT: \nTo understand this exhibition\, one must first contemplate the definition of the word “interiors”. \nOn a basic level this word refers to the spaces we live in\, a home that has rooms consisting of four walls\, windows and doors. If you ask a child to draw a room interior\, in most cases this is what you will get. However\, the meaning of ‘interiors’ is not an easy concept to isolate as it encompasses a broad sphere of emotional experiences\, sensory perceptions\, memories and feelings of nostalgia. \nThe works selected for this exhibition not only fulfill the basic idea of what an interior is but go beyond this concept due to how each artist approaches these spaces – as seen through unique interior or exterior vantage points. These works are not simply documents of what one holds dear in interior spaces but records a sense of life; a sense of being; and a sense of place. \nTaken as a whole\, this exhibition is meant to be a visual investigation into beauty\, personal narrative\, and memory. These paintings\, mixed media pieces\, and photographs provide one with a sense of humor\, power\, weakness\, and mystery. As a viewer\, you are asked to consider an entire range of visual and emotional experiences that room interiors invoke in each of us and then relate these experiences to one’s personal space. \n– Wayne Lempka \n  \nMeet the JUROR: Wayne Lempka is Art Collections Manager of the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at the State University of New York at New Paltz where he is responsible for the care of over 9\,000 objects in the museum’s permanent collection. He has also served as curator at The Dorsky for many exhibitions including Thoughts of Home\, which explored not only how our living environments reflect who we are but how artists use this idea in their creative expression. Prior to his position at The Dorsky\, Mr. Lempka held positions at Storm King Art Center\, the Museum of American Folk Art\, the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design\, (Smithsonian Institute) the Chase Manhattan Bank Corporate Art Program\, The Historic New Orleans Collection and the Barrett Art Center. Mr. Lempka is currently a lecturer in the Department of Art History at Marist University. He has also taught in the Art History Department of SUNY New Paltz. Mr. Lempka holds a BFA degree in Fine Arts and Art History from Pratt Institute\, and a MA in Art History & Museum Studies from New York University. In practice\, it’s anything but. Ink reveals every hesitation\, arrogance\, hiding or turning away. Calligraphy\, while beautiful\, is also trembling & showing up for one’s shortcomings; is incremental shifts in habits in hand & in life; is a visual/historical map of intersecting languages\, sacred traditions\, & cultural legacies. Students will try out a variety of calligraphic forms—Arabic reed\, Chinese brush\, as well as hybrid tools (Arabic in the Chinese style). \nElements of calligraphic study & free-writing exercises are then used to explore ink work as a tool of listening & self-awareness. DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\,  9:30 am – 12 noon \nOctober 4\, 11\, 18\, 25 (4 sessions) \n$160\, $140 Members \n  \nColor Comprehension for Painters – Making\, mixing and using color \nThis 4-week workshop focuses on color\, the fundamental component of painting. Harness this ethereal facet of painting. You will become more familiar with the nuances of color was we progress through a series of fun exercises. Students will be asked to challenge their perception and application of color as it relates to emotion\, mood\, and psychology. We will utilize practical applied experimentation of color mixing\, not academic theory. \nThis class is appropriate for painters of all full color mixable mediums such as oil\, acrylic\, gouache\, watercolor. Pastels can also be used if the set is large enough with a full range of color options. \nLevel: painters with a little to a lot of experience will be able to follow along easily; beginners may find this too advanced. \n  \nMaterials\nStudents should bring their full painting kit and we will discuss which pigments we will use.\nDay one will require 4 small 5x7ish boards or one large panel that can be divided into quadrants. This class is meant to be a gathering of likeminded artists who want the joy of painting in a group atmosphere.\nAll levels welcome. For beginners\, we will cover all the beginner fundamentals of painting including supplies\, mixing color\, how to use brushes\, creating a good composition\, how to pick a subject\, identifying a focal point etc. For more advanced students\, there will be one on one time with the instructor to go over your piece and suggested guidance. \n\nYour piece will be worked on for multiple days\, don’t fret if it doesn’t finish the first day!\n\n\nFor beginners\, a picture will be posted in the Wallkill River Center for the Arts facebook group by Nancy that will be what you’ll be working off of\, please be sure to print off that image in color. Limited copies may be available. For more advanced students\, you’re encouraged to bring your own references or works in progress to work on.\nStudents will bring their own supplies. She studied oil painting at the Huntington Arts League on Long Island. Nancy had her own mural business for many years and has painted murals in one of the Vanderbilt homes on Long Island. Nancy painted murals for the cancer patients in hospitals on Long Island where they were used for guided imagery to take away the patients pain.\nShe came to live in the Hudson Valley in 2004 and joined the Wallkill River School of Art where she now teaches acrylic workshops and plein air painting. DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, 10 am – 12 pm \nOctober 12\, 19\, 26 \n$90 \nThis beginning watercolor class will be focused on producing finished work. (Please note\, for the October class there will be no beginners day as traditionally offered.) \nMany learn best when following along painting with an artist\, so that is the approach this class will follow. We will produce a finished painting each week with a different subject\, and returning students are welcomed.  The approach will be to paint fast and loose\, to cover the basics of watercolor by doing them\, and hopefully\, to have some fun. \n\n\nIn the event of wonderful weather\, this class may go outside to paint. This will be announced ahead of time.\n\n\nStephanie Snyder began painting in watercolor in 2022 at the Wallkill River Center for the Arts under the instruction of Alan Lewis. She enjoys painting landscapes in an impressionistic style\, and paints as often as her teaching career allows. She lists her influences as Alan Lewis\, Dusan Djukaric\, JMW Turner\, and Stanley Donwood.\n\n\n\n    \n\n\n\nStudents are to bring their own supplies.  Specific recommendations will be discussed in the first class\, so bring what you already have rather than purchasing anything before that class.\n\nPaper- cold press paper recommended (100% cotton)\nBrushes – 3 basic brushes: #10 round\, a smaller brush for detail\, a larger quill brush (size 6) or mop brush of about an inch\nPaint – Avoid chalky mediums. DESCRIPTION:Saturday mornings\, 9:30 am – 12 pm \nNovember 1\, 8\, 15th \n$120\, $105 for Members \n  \nFor beginner\, intermediate and advanced students.  The instructor’s main medium is oils but any painting medium is welcome in this class. \nStudents are encouraged to follow their own stylistic inclinations while learning and practicing the basic rules of: drawing & painting techniques\, composition\, value\, color mixing\, color theory\, materials and supplies\, etc. \nSubject matter will range and include still life\, landscape\, portrait and figure. Whenever feasible students will work from life\, other times photographic references may be used.  Students may also use this class as an independent-study opportunity and work on their own personal projects. \nAll sessions will be live work sessions. We will produce a finished painting each week with a different subject\, and returning students are welcomed.  The approach will be to paint fast and loose\, to cover the basics of watercolor by doing them\, and hopefully\, to have some fun. \n  \nStephanie Snyder began painting in watercolor in 2022 at the Wallkill River Center for the Arts under the instruction of Alan Lewis. She enjoys painting landscapes in an impressionistic style\, and paints as often as her teaching career allows. She lists her influences as Alan Lewis\, Susan Djukaric\, JMW Turner\, and Stanley Donwood. \n  \nStudents are to bring their own supplies.  Specific recommendations will be discussed in the first class\, so bring what you already have rather than purchasing anything before that class. \nPaper- cold press paper recommended (100% cotton)\nBrushes – 3 basic brushes: #10 round\, a smaller brush for detail\, a larger quill brush (size 6) or mop brush of about an inch\nPaint – Avoid chalky mediums. Student grade paints are good for getting started\, you don’t need expensive artist grade paints. \nYELLOWS:\n1 Cadmium or Hansa Yellow Light\n1 Cadmium or Hansa yellow medium \nREDS & ORANGE:\n1 alizarin crimson or magenta or quinacridone magenta (purplish red)\n1 cadmium red medium (true red)\n1 Cadmium Orange \nBLUES:\n1 Ultramarine Blue\n1 Cerulean or Viridian \nEARTH TONES:\n1 Burnt or Raw Umber\n1 Yellow Ochre \nWHITE:\n1 Titanium White \nBRUSHES… China bristle filberts are the best. You will need to start out with a good range. Start with at least one filbert of each of these sizes #2\,3\,4\,5. Avoid synthetic bristles- they don’t stand up to the rigors of oil painting.\nSOLVENT… Gamsol or some other brand odorless mineral spirit. This is for traditional oils not water mixable oils.\nPALETTE… disposable paper palettes are fine to start out with.\nPALETTE KNIFE… the kind that has a bend in the handle and is shaped like a pointy trowel.\nCANVAS…For beginners it’s best to have a few canvas boards to start out with around 11×14. \nPAPER TOWELS ….. don’t forget these!
