SUMMARY:Alison Colby: #keepingitsecure
DESCRIPTION:WRCA presents a solo exhibit of photographic works by Alison Colby on view July 5\, 2024 – September 1\, 2024.  The gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment.  Artists Reception Saturday\, July 13\, 2024 5:00-7:00 pm. Receptions are always free and open to the public. \nArtist Statement: \n#keepingitsecure is the first exhibition of photographs by New York city-based artist Alison Colby.  While she does take pictures of other things\, it is traffic cones that capture her eye. “They are fun\, colorful and tell a story. Their inherent flimsiness and the futility of their mission is endearing\,” says Colby.  This exhibition shifts the viewer’s experience from the small screen to the gallery wall.  Her photos have been on Instagram since 2014 (@sparkleshow). \nArtist Biography: \nPrevious artistic endeavors include “Aesthetic Technicians\,” a shared exhibition with visual artist Sas Colby at the The Space in Oakland\, CA (1980); “Losers Weepers\,” a public access cable call-in show celebrating found objects with Lizzy Yoder in NYC (1995-97) and the “Donkey Show\,” a collaboration with Robin Bordie featuring modified paintings at La Serena\, Mallorca\, Spain (2017). She has used her creative skills to resist the destruction of the East River Park\, participating in protests with East River Park Action. Most recently she participated in successful union actions for a fair contract at her job. Alison Colby has worked in magazine and newspaper production for over 40 years. She has lived in the East Village (NYC) since 1981. \n  \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Peter A. Kopher\, Legacy Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Retrospective exhibit honoring the photographic work of the late Peter A. Kopher. \nThe exhibit is on view July 5\, 2024 – September 1\, 2024 \nThe gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment. \nArtists Reception Saturday\, July 13\, 2024 5:00-7:00 pm. Receptions are always free and open to the public. \n \nBiography: \nPeter A. Kopher of Warwick NY\, passed away on January 2\, 2023 at the age of 66 years old.  Peter  was an integral part of the Orange County\, NY arts scene.  He was a member of Wallkill River Center for the Arts and exhibited regularly and notably won First Place in the People’s Choice Award for his photograph “Into the Mist” in 2021.  Peter was also active in the Goshen Art League and the Warwick Art League. \nPeter A. Kopher had an insightful and astute eye as a photographer.   He was particularly talented at photographing ordinary objects but through incisive\, minimalist inspired composition and selective use of the view finder\, he elevated humble scenes\, and revealed them to be ironic\, contemplative\, sometimes humorous and often elegant. \nHe was also an avid swimmer and hiker\, managing to hike the NY\, NJ\, and PA portions of the Appalachian Trail. He adored nature; his favorite book was “Walden” by Thoreau. He most often found his own true self while walking outdoors. He was a great lover of animals\, including his two beloved rescue cats\, Cassie and Prudence. He was a devoted son\, brother\, father and husband. \nBorn in Rockville Centre\, NY on September 29\, 1956\, he was the son of Raymond and Joan (Creeden) Kopher.  Peter attended school in Farmingdale\, New York. He participated in several high school theatrical productions and also earned a high NYSSMA rating for his sousaphone playing. After high school graduation\, Peter received a scholarship to the New York Institute of Technology\, where he studied Communication Arts. He searched for work combining his love of theatre with his technical skills\, and eventually earned his union card for membership in Local #1\, the International Actors and Theatre Stage Union (IATSE). In a career spanning 30 years as a stagehand and lighting assistant\, he had countless fascinating stories to tell. He was a hard worker and well respected among his colleagues. His work credits included MTV\, Silent Library\, a one-year stint with the Broadway production of Les Miz\, The Rachael Ray Show\, Lighting Director for the Jon Stewart show\, Project Runway\, lighting the big tree at Rockefeller Center\, SNL\, the US Open tennis tournament\, and countless other free-lance jobs. Peter and his wife\, Sally\, became residents of Warwick NY in 2013\, following a move from Seaford\, NY after Superstorm Sandy displaced him from his home – a roomy and unique housebarge which was moored on the Great South Bay. \nPeter is survived by his wife of 11 years\, Sally (McCalmont) Kopher; twin daughters Caitlin Wilmot and  her husband Josh of Rochester\, NY; and Cristin Kopher of New York\, NY; step-daughters Sarah Sica and  her husband Ramiro Flores of Brooklyn and Anna Sica of Fairfield\, IA; grandson Bradley Wilmot; and sister Linda Finch of Columbia\, SC. He was predeceased by his parents and sister Laurie Parrish. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION: Hot Wrk Ensemble plus Guest Artist Gwen Laster \nAugust 3\, 2024 – 3 pm \nWallkill River Center for the Arts\, 232 Ward Street at 17K\, Montgomery\, NY 12549 \nAccessibility:  Wheelchair accessible ramp and bathroom. \nFREE CONCERT – Suggested Donation $20.00 \n  \nHot Wrk Ensemble\, the saxophone/woodwind and percussion trio founded in 2020 by award- winning musicians J Brooks Marcus (J Why)\, Lois Hicks-Wozniak and Brad Hubbard\, is committed to creating community through diverse\, genre-eclectic “chamber grooves” that include collaborative improvisation.    \nHot Wrk’s programs include Bossa Nova\, Scarlatti\, Son Jalisco\, Funk\, free jazz\, prepared electronics and original compositions by ensemble members in an interactive experience.  Audiences are invited to engage by sharing thoughts\, asking questions\, contributing ideas and listening.  Hot Wrk Ensemble believes chamber music can be a voice for change by engaging community to interact with and partake in the creation process – breaking systemic barriers that have placed classical and jazz in niche markets. \n“Hot Wrk Ensemble is three gifted composer/musician/improvisers with a uniquely panglobal focus.  Are they a contemporary classical ensemble with truly eclectic instrumentation? Or are they a jazz group that has both Miles Davis and Domenico Scarlatti in their book?  The single answer to all those questions is a resounding ‘YES!’ In short\, HWE is the very much the poster child for broadly inclusive unconventional cultural engagement.” (Elysium Furnace Works) \nLois Hicks-Wozniak is an active concert saxophonist and educator in the New York Metropolitan and the Hudson Valley regions\, committed to community engagement through new music and global music styles.  \nA D’Addario Woodwinds Artist\, her many awards include winning the Special Presentation Winners Recital Series\, sponsored by Artists International Presentations; earning her a New York Recital Debut at Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall.  \nShe is described in performance as having “tremendous technique and fidelity to tone without sacrificing musical line\,” and a “beautiful soprano saxophone sound…preserving the beauty and consistency of her sound regardless of the technical or musical demands of the moment” (Saxophone Symposium). \nHer album Playback: Music for Saxophone and Bass Trombone features Matt Wozniak\, trombone and Nadine Shank\, piano.   Lois has performed and recorded with the Albany Symphony\, the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and the first Burmese-American Hsiang Waing ensemble among others.  \nPreviously serving in the U.S. Army she played with the West Point Band and taught at Marist College\, Montclair State University\, and SUNY New Paltz. She holds degrees from Florida State University and Montclair State University.   Visit: http: www.loishickswozniak.com \n  \n J. Brooks Marcus (aka J Why) is a multi-instrumentalist and composer who studied jazz\, classical\, electronic and experimental music at California Institute of the Arts\, Berklee College of Music\, and San Francisco State University. \nHe has composed for film\, dance\, puppet theater and podcasts.  \nCollaborators have included theater director and playwright Theresa Chavez\, dance filmmaker Susan Osberg\, musician and composer Julz A\, dance filmmaker Anna Brady Nuse\, filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev\, and choreographer Sasha Welsh.  \nIn 2017 he formed the collaborative production duo Obsidian Soundsystem with musician and engineer Jonny Taylor. As a performer\, he has played with Pamela Z\, Gwen Laster’s Gameboard\, and Andy Rinehart.  \nJ teaches composition at SUNY New Paltz and private lessons at Beacon Music Factory. His music can be found at https://soundcloud.com/j-why-1 and https://obsidiansoundsystem.bandcamp.com/music. \n  \nBrad Hubbard is a Composer who plays Baritone Saxophone\, Flute and Bass Clarinet. He is a member of 3rd Bell quartet combining jazz\, world\, and electronic music\, The David Sanford Big Band with the recently released “A Prayer for Lester Bowie”\, Neil Alexander’s X Ensemble a modern Chamber Jazz Octet and from 1988-2004 The New Century Saxophone Quartet.   \nIn May of 2024 Brad performed the World Premiere of his “Concerto for Baritone Saxophone and Concert Band.”  He has commissioned and premiered Benjamin Boone’s “Concerto for Baritone Saxophone and Orchestra” as well as pieces from Sherwood Shaffer\, Monica Ashton\, Mark Taylor and Michael Bellar and is also a composer and performer with Composers Concordance in New York City.  \nAs a sideman Brad has appeared with a broad range of artists including Corey Glover of Living Colour\, Nancy Wilson\, Pinetop Perkins\, Joe Lovano\, Lew Tabackin\, Lenny Pickett\, Boots Randolph\, Roy Clark\, The Monica Ashton Jazz Band among others.   \nBrad is currently the Woodwind Instructor at The Beacon Music Factory in Beacon NY\, where he lives with his family. \n  \nGwen Laster – violinist\, composer\, teaching artist.  Gwen Laster is a nationally acclaimed musician who has been the recipient of awards by the National Endowment for the Arts\, MPower Sphinx\, Jubilation Foundation\, Puffin Foundation\, Arts Mid-Hudson\, Lila Wallace\, and the Cognac Hennessey 1st place Jazz Search. She began her love for improvising and composing because of her parents’ love of jazz\, blues\, soul and classical music played endlessly on the record player and her progressive jazz music educators from Detroit’s public schools. Gwen Laster is many things: A virtuoso violinist with exquisite taste. An adventurous composer\, arranger and orchestrator. A classically trained artist with a deep appreciation for America’s musical history\, and a scholar of African- American musical heritage. A socially conscious activist and educator who understands the power of music to reach and touch everyday people. \nHer playing is poignant\, descriptive and always relevant. Perhaps that’s why she has recorded and performed with the world’s most influential artists. The list reads like a “who’s who” of modern masters: Andrea Bocelli\, David Foster\, Alicia Keys\, Rhianna\, Shaggy\, Aretha Franklin\, Solange\, Mark Anthony\, J Lo\, Shakira\, Gladys Knight\, Natalie Cole\, Anthony Braxton\, Nona Hendryx\, Wadada Leo Smith\, William Parker\, Danny Elfman\, Sun Ra Arkestra\, Tyler\, the Creator\, Emeline Michel and Andrew Baba Lamb. Her talents also extend to Broadway (Miss Saigon\, Beauty and the Beast\, Carousel\, Wicked\, Porgy and Bess\, The King and I). As the founder of the Creative Strings Improvisers Ensemble (CSIE)\, she has created programs which promote self-expression through improvisation. Her sensitivity to global music informs her workshops and master classes across the U.S. A native of Detroit\, she holds two degrees in music from the University of Michigan and has lived in New York for many years. \nHer newest recording “Blue Lotus” is performed by New MUSE4tet\, an improvisational string quartet whose original works promote social activism. Her recordings as a leader are Sneak Preview\, I Hear You Smiling\, Gameboard and Blue Lotus. \n  \n  \nThis concert is generously sponsored by  \n \n \n \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:08/2024 Beginning Watercolor with Alan Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, 10am-12pm \nAugust 4\, 11\, 18\, 25 \n$120 ($100 Members) ($90 to skip beginners day) \nThe first day of the months’ session is for anyone who is just starting out or needs more guidance. I would recommend that you attend if you’re a first time student of this class! \n\nThis beginning watercolor class will be focused on producing finished work.  I have noticed that I have learned best when following along painting with an artist\, so that is the approach this class will follow. We will produce a finished painting each week with a different subject\, and returning students are welcomed.  The approach will be to paint fast and loose\, to cover the basics of watercolor by doing them\, and hopefully to have some fun. The first day is for beginners who need to learn the starting techniques and the materials.\n\nIn the event of wonderful weather\, this class may go outside to paint! Be sure to bring sunscreen\, a sunhat\, or other item to protect you and make you comfortable.\n\n\nAlan Lewis has been painting in watercolor since 2013\, and usually paints every day.  His subjects vary from portraits to pets to landscapes\, and he enjoys painting plein air whenever possible.  His paintings are looser and more impressionistic\, rather than highly detailed\, and he has been most significantly influenced by the watercolor master Alvaro Castagnet.  A member of the Wallkill River School\, Goshen Art League\, Lower Hudson Valley Plein Air Painters\, and Northeast Watercolor\, he has also recently been awarded for art done with the Friends of the Great Swamp.\n\nStudents will bring their own supplies.\nMinimum 3 Students.\n \n\n\n\nPaper- I would recommend Strathmore 300 (or better but a little more expensive 400) series\, cold press paper.\nBrushes – A beginner kit might have 1 #10 round\, one smaller brush for detail\, and one larger flat or map brush of about an inch. It is nice to have some different sizes\, but you don’t need expensive brushes to start.\nPaint – Avoid chalky mediums like Reeves. Tubes will be easier to work with than pans.\nPalette – A watercolor palette has many wells for your paint and space to mix colors.\nOther – Not really necessary in this class\, but will be useful at home- A hairdryer\, painters tape\, paper towels\, etc.\n\n\nREFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

SUMMARY:August 17th Artist Talk with Alison Colby
DESCRIPTION:Wallkill River Center for the Arts (WRCA) will welcome photographer Alison Colby for an artist’s talk on Saturday\, August 17\, at 2PM. \n“Until I was approached by the gallery’s chief curator\, Billy Noonan\, I hadn’t seen my work outside of my phone\,” says Colby. “Billy helped me refine what an exhibit might look like—we discussed the number and size of images to show. He could see my vision and helped make it a reality. It was a revelation to see it on gallery walls.” \nColby’s solo exhibit #keepingitsecure\, currently on view at Wallkill River Center for the Arts through Sunday\, September 1\, has been a terrific success\, a crowd favorite. \n“We’ve had very positive responses to our two previous artists’ talks\,” says Sarah Fortner Pierson\, WRCA executive director. “It has been an enriching experience for the artists as well as the gallery visitors. Often\, art receptions can be busy\, noisy\, social events. They are a lot of fun. But sometimes they are not ideal for a focused engagement with the art. These artists talks offer a more intimate experience with the artist and their work.” \nAlison Colby’s photos have been on Instagram since 2014 (@sparkleshow). While the artist does take pictures of other things\, it is traffic cones that capture her eye. This exhibition shifts the viewer’s experience from the small screen to the gallery wall. \n“I’m new at all of this—and I look forward to sharing what moves me to stop and make a picture\, and what I am aiming for in a photo\,” Colby adds. “ At the artist’s talk\, I’ll be taking my cues from the exhibit’s visitors and will answer any questions they may have. I enjoy hearing about what people think is going on in my images. Everyone has a different story\, and I find them all thrilling. I like art to be fun\, and I look forward to exploring audience reaction in this casual and intimate setting with the folks at WRCA.” \nThe public is welcome free of charge. Donations are always gratefully accepted.\nThe artist will offer a show catalogue\, prints\, and a book for sale. \nAlison Colby\n#keepingitsecure \nPrevious artistic endeavors include “Aesthetic Technicians\,” a shared exhibition with visual artist Sas Colby at the The Space in Oakland\, CA (1980); “Losers Weepers\,” a public access cable call-in show celebrating found objects with Lizzy Yoder in NYC (1995-97) and the “Donkey Show\,” a collaboration with Robin Bordie featuring modified paintings at La Serena\, Mallorca\, Spain (2017). SUMMARY:8/27/24 Iona Marsh Plein Air with Laura Martinez-Bianco
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday August 27th (Rain Date August 28th) \n10am – 1pm \nat Iona Marsh/Bear Mt. State Park \n$50 per person\, $45 for members \nJoin me for a day of plein air painting\, all levels and abilities are invited. Artists are encouraged to work in any medium they are comfortable with. This class is not specifically about medium but rather about the concepts and techniques that are universal to Plein Air painting. \nBring your easel\, your painting supplies and a painting surface. Helpful to have a sketchbook\, paper and pencil. This will be a one day event so consider the size you will be working on. \nEach session will be 3 hours with a demo\, individual instruction and critique included. Please bring a snack\, water and a hat. \n \nI am drawn to landscapes\, capturing and preserving the views that have been seen over the years by so many. On location I work in pastels. I focus on that specific time of day. The time of day changes the light\, the color\, the atmosphere: it changes everything. Pastels afford me the use of pure pigment. The mark each pastel makes directly from my hand to the surface is exciting. In my studio I create with encaustic\, based on my Plein Air experiences. Working with molten wax and fire has energy and spontaneity. Whether in the studio or on site each painting is a challenge to record a moment in time. \nREFUND AND CANCEL
