To reserve your seat\, register by purchasing a FREE ticket – at bottom of event page. \n  \n_______________ \n\n\nAbout the performers:\n  \nNEIL “NAIL” ALEXANDER \nProlific master pianist\, synthesist\, keyboardist and composer Neil “Nail” Alexander has had a career spanning more than 4 decades. \nHe remains passionately involved in multiple performance and production projects – including NAIL\, Cloudburst\, Mr. Gone\, X Ensemble\, Supercluster – across multiple genres – including jazz\, rock\, funk\, blues\, electronica\, ambient and contemporary chamber music. Neil has toured worldwide across the US\, Mexico\, Canada and Europe. \nNeil has been involved with Modern Dance Choreographers for 40 years\, teaches master classes in electronic music production and heads the Ableton Hudson Valley User Group. In 2015 Neil was awarded Individual Artist of the Year by the Orange County Arts Council and is endorsed by Moog Music. \nHe has worked with The Mahavishnu Project\, Rez Abasi\, Judi Silvano\, Gunter Hampel\, Joe Lovano\, Marty Balin\, Corey Glover\, and more. \nRecent recordings include “Check Your Vibration”(Nail Jung)\, “Solos/Duos/Trios”(Neil Alexander)\, a solo piano performance of the “Rite of Spring”(2013)\, and NAIL Live at the Blue Note\, NYC. \n  \nCRAIG CHIN \nERRANT SPACE – AMBIENT SOUNDSCAPES is a project of composer/recordist Craig Chin. Its goal is spatio-temporal dilation through sound. Performances are site-specific\, spontaneous compositions influenced by both the physical characteristics of the space they are performed in and the occupants of that space. \nCraig creates soundscapes that are simultaneously unobtrusive and interesting\, creating an atmosphere where the environment and audience are enveloped in a sort of subliminal soundscape. \nBrian Eno coined the term Ambient Music in the 1970’s\, defining it as music that “must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting.” This is the essence of the Errant Space philosophy. \nCraig produces the monthly Errant Space Podcast featuring experimental and electronic musicians and curates several music series\, including a monthly electronic and experimental night and the Space Out\, Outside series. He also has a weekly radio show\, The Space Program\, on Vassar College’s Station WVKR. \n  \n  \nADAM HOLQUIST \nONEWAYNESS – podcast focused on the arts\, politics\, and current events – is Adam Holquist\, a composer\, musician\, sound designer\, and multimedia creator from Erie\, Pennsylvania. \nHe uses guitars\, pianos\, analog and digital synthesis\, spoken word and field recordings\, and a variety of hardware and software tools to create atmospheric and textural music which draws influence from a variety of sources. \nSince 2011\, he has given hundreds of live performances and released over 40 albums and EP’s. His work has been featured on both terrestrial and streaming radio stations\, charted on Zone Music Reporter’s weekly Top 100 ambient music airplay charts\, and reviewed by publications in the US and abroad. \nAdam has created original music and sound design for theatre\, independent films\, art installations and also serves as curator of the ElectroFLUX Experimental Music Series\, presenting creative music from local to international artists. \n  \n\n\n_______________ \n  \nWRCA’s 2026 concert series has been made possible thanks to the following: \n  \n \n  \n \n \n \n \n \nWallkill River Center for the Arts programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Currently\, due to the intimate nature of concert location and limited seating\, advance registration for seating is NOW FULL.   \nStanding room will be available day of the concert and is on a first-come\, first served basis. \n_____ \n\n\n\nAbout the performers:\n  \nJoe Lovano \nGrammy-winning saxophonist\, composer and producer Joe Lovano is fearless in finding new modes of artistic expression. With a Grammy Win for his 52nd Street Themes and 14 other nominations\, he has won DownBeat Magazine’s Critics and Readers Polls countless times as Tenor Saxophonist\, Musician of the Year\, Jazz Album of the Year and Triple Crowns from DownBeat. He has also received numerous awards from Jazz Times and the Jazz Journalists Association for Tenor Saxophone\, Album of the Year and Musician of the Year. \n  \nBorn in Cleveland\, Ohio on December 29\, 1952 he attended the famed Berklee College of Music in Boston where years later he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate. Since 2001 he has held the Gary Burton Chair in Jazz Performance and is a founding faculty member since 2009 of the Global Jazz Institute at Berklee directed by Danilo Pérez. He is a guest lecturer at New York University’s Jazz Program\, Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music as well as Clinician at Universities around the globe. \n  \nFrom 1991 through 2016\, Lovano released an unprecedented 25 records as a leader for the historic Blue Note Records. Joe Lovano Quartet: Classic! Live at Newport featuring Hank Jones was recorded in 2005 and released in 2016 to critical acclaim. In 2019\, Lovano released his debut album as a bandleader on ECM Records\, Trio Tapestry\, with Marilyn Crispell and Carmen Castaldi. Over the next few years\, Lovano saw the release of three additional ECM Records albums: ROMA\, a collaboration with Enrico Rava; Arctic Riff\, a special guest appearance with the Marcin Wasilewski Trio; and the sophomore release from Lovano’s Trio Tapestry\, Garden of Expression. In 2021\, Lovano released Other Worlds\, his third album with Sound Prints\, a quintet he co-leads with trumpeter Dave Douglas. The next year brought a collaboration with guitarist Jakob Bro\, Once Around the Room: A Tribute to Paul Motian. In 2023\, Lovano released his third Trio Tapestry recording entitled\, Our Daily Bread. Most recently\, Lovano released Homage\, a follow-up recording with the Marcin Wasilewski Trio. \n  \nIn addition\, composer Mark Anthony Turnage wrote a Concerto for Saxophone and Chamber Orchestra for Joe called “A Man Descending” which has been performed globally and Maestro Michael Abene orchestrated an album of all-Lovano originals called Symphonica for the WDR Symphonic Orchestra and Big Band\, which was released on Blue Note and received a Grammy nomination. \n  \nJoe has performed and recorded with a long list of jazz greats including Woody Herman\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Mel Lewis\, Bob Brookmeyer\, Paul Motian\, Bill Frisell\, Tony Bennett\, Abbey Lincoln\, Charlie Haden\, John Scofield\, Gunther Schuller\, Elvin Jones\, McCoy Tyner\, Ed Blackwell\, Herbie Hancock\, Dave Holland\, Hank Jones\, Dave Liebman\, Michael Brecker\, Dave Douglas\, Judi Silvano\, Ravi Coltrane\, Chucho Valdés\, Ornette Coleman\, Diana Krall\, and many others. Joe has created an extensive body of work for his own ensembles including strings\, woodwinds\, his horn-rich Nonet\, the Classic Quartet\, Trio Tapestry\, and more. \n  \nJoe Lovano continues to explore new horizons within the world of music as a soloist\, bandleader and composer. \n\n\n  \nDavid Rothenberg  \nMusician and philosopher David Rothenberg wrote Why Birds Sing\, Bug Music\, Survival of the Beautiful and many other books\, published in at least eleven languages. He has more than forty recordings out\, including One Dark Night I Left My Silent House which came out on ECM\, and more recently Just Leave It All Behind and Lost Steps. He has performed or recorded with Pauline Oliveros\, Peter Gabriel\, Ray Phiri\, Suzanne Vega\, Scanner\, Elliott Sharp\, Umru\, Iva Bittová\, and the Karnataka College of Percussion. In 2024 he won a Grammy Award as part of For the Birds\, in the category of Best Boxed Set. Whale Music and Secret Sounds of Ponds are his latest books. Nightingales In Berlin and Eastern Anthems are his latest films. His piece Eleven Paths to Animal Music premiered at the Sammlung Hoffmann in Berlin in 2025. SUMMARY:CONCERT | Thunderbird American Indian Dancers
DESCRIPTION:Wallkill River Center for the Arts is pleased to present the THUNDERBIRD AMERICAN INDIAN DANCERS as part of our 2025 music series. \n\nThe Thunderbird American Indian Dancers are the oldest resident Native American dance company in New York. The troupe was founded in 1963 by a group of ten Native American men and women\, all New Yorkers\, who were descended from Mohawk\, Hopi\, Winnebago and San Blas tribes. Some were in school at the time; all were “first generation\,” meaning that their parents had been born on reservations. They founded the troupe to keep alive the traditions\, songs and dances they had learned from their parents\, and added to their repertoire from other Native Americans living in New York and some who were passing through. Within three or four years\, they were traveling throughout the continental U.S.\, expanding and sharing their repertoire and gleaning new dances on the reservations. (A number of Thunderbird members are winners of Fancy Dance contests held on reservations\, where the standard of competition is unmistakably high.) \nSaturday\, September 6\, 5 – 7 pm\nThe Barn at Goshen Green Farm\n3301 NY Route 207\, Goshen\, NY \n  \nThis event is free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $20/person. Reserve you spot today! \n_____ \n\n\n\nAbout the performers:\n\n\nMembers of the Thunderbirds range in professions from teachers to hospital patient advocates\, tree surgeons and computer engineers who share a commitment to raising scholarships for young American Indian students.  Over the years\, Thunderbird works\, activities and events have assisted more than 400 students. Original members included: Louis Mofsie\, Josephine Mofsie Tarrant\, Muriel Miguel\, Gloria Miguel\, Marguarite\, Jonathan Williams and others. Swift Eagle from the Santo Domingo Pueblo and others taught the group Native American Indian culture\, dances\, songs passing down information that would have otherwise been lost. \n\nAn Important History: Preserving Native Culture Traditions \nThunderbird American Indian Dancers\, officially incorporated in 1963\, tracing its roots further back\, to a group of teenagers called the Little Eagles.  From the beginning\, keenly aware of the great diversity of tribal groups living in and around the metropolitan area — each with a very distinct cultural background — its members were determined to learn and preserve the songs and dances of their own tribes\, then to branch out and include other tribes.  Their teachers were their fathers\, mothers\, aunts\, uncles\, and cousins. Since its formation\, Louis Mofsie and the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers have visited and performed in almost all fifty states\, where they have learned from a wide variety of Indian peoples. The Thunderbirds pledged to help preserve and perpetuate the culture and traditions of the American Indian people through their songs and dances\, and their ceremonies wherever possible\, and to bring before the general public a more realistic picture and greater understanding of the American Indian people through dance performances\, lectures\, pow wows and workshops.  In fulfilling this pledge\, the Thunderbirds have shared performances and workshops in venues including: The New York World’s Fair\, Lincoln Center\, Museum of Natural History\, Heye Foundation\, Barnard College\, and The National Museum of the American Indian among others.  They have also toured throughout the United States and in Canada\, Israel and Japan. \n  \n\n  \nWRCA’s 2025 concert series has been made possible thanks to the support of: \n \n \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Wallkill River Center for the Arts is pleased to present STEVE GORN: MUSIC FOR THE HEALING OF MIND & BODY as part of our 2025 music series. \n  \nFar more than entertainment\, music is a portal for mind-body synchronization; a conduit for engagement in ritual\, group catharsis\, entertainment and a holder of mythology and history.  Steve Gorn explores The Transformative Power of Music in words and live performance. Drawing on Indian classical music this will be an offering of music for healing of the mind\, body\, and soul. \nSteve plays Bansuri Bamboo Flute and will be joined for this special collaborative concert by Naren Budhakar playing tabla percussion\, dancer Savia Berger\, and a special surprise Guest. \n  \nSunday\, August 17\, 3 – 5 pm\nWRCA Galleries at The Patchett House\n232 Ward Street\, Montgomery\, NY \n  \nThis event is free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $20/person. Registration – at bottom of event page –  is requested but not required.  \n_____ \n\n\n\nAbout the performers:\n\n\nSteve Gorn plays Indian Classical Music and new American Music on the bansuri bamboo flute in concerts and festivals throughout the world. His gurus are the late bansuri master\, Sri Gour Goswami\, of Kolkata\, and Pandit Raghunath Seth of Mumbai\, who he has often accompanied in concert. He has also studied with the late Ustad Z. M. Dagar. \nDuring the past decade Steve has often performed in India\, appearing at Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal\, Triveni Hall in New Delhi\, The Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata\, NCPA\, and The Nehru Center in Mumbai\, and numerous other venues. His performance with Pandit Ravi Shankar’s disciple\, Barun Kumar Pal\, at Kolkata’s Rama Krishna Mission\, was televised throughout India. In the New York area\, he often performs with Pandit Samir Chatterjee as well as the Darbari Ensemble with sitarist\, Allyn Miner and the sarangi master\, Ramesh Misra. \nSri Gour Goswami introduced Steve to the vocal (gayaki) style of bansuri that was first introduced by the legendary flutist\, Padmabhusan Pannalal Ghosh. As a disciple of this illustrious gharana\, the heart of Steve’s playing reflects an attention to meer and gamak and an ‘old world’ rendering of raga which unfolds timelessly and with attention to the rasa\, or color of each note and melodic contour. \nSince 1996\, Steve has continued his study under the illustrious bansuri master\, Pandit Raghunath Seth\, of Mumbai. Raghunathji’s compositions in numerous ragas\, and his performance style are now a prominent feature of Steve’s performances. \n\n  \nNaren Budhakar was born and brought up in the Indian classical music tradition. He began performing Tabla at a young age. A disciple of Tabla Maestro Ustad Shabbir Nisar\, Naren has played with prominent instrumentalists\, vocalists and dancers including Pandit Birju Maharaj\, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan\, Pandit Jasraj and Shaed Parvez. Naren is co-director of the East-West School of Music at Ananda Ashram and as a faculty member teaches and performs regularly. \n  \n  \nSavia Berger is a dancer\, actor\, choreographer and teacher based in the Catskills where she began her career with Catskill Ballet Theater. Her dance credits include Feld Ballets\, NY\, Eglevsky Ballet\, Basel Ballet (Switzerland)\, Les Danse Donsk (choreographer Mark Allen Davis) and many other independent choreographers. She was featured as an actor in Kismet and performed as a dancer in Brigadoon with the New York City Opera. She went on to study voice and acting and became a member of the original Broadway workshop of Fosse (Director Chet Walker) for a year. \nHer credits as a choreographer and improvisational dancer include Cy Tombly Dreamhouse\, a multi-media evening directed by Marilyn Crispell; collaborations with Peter and Peter (Peter Einhorn\, Peter Wetzler) and dancers; and can be seen improvising with Creative Music Studio’s (founders Karl Berger\, Ingrid Sertso\, Ornette Coleman) Creative Improvisors Orchestra every month in Kingston\, NY. \nSavia has also appeared in industrial shows and on film. She is a second generation classical Pilates instructor certified by Romana Kryzanowska and ran her own Dance and Pilates Studio in New Jersey for 8 years. We use non-traditional venues such as organic farms\, historic buildings\, bookstores\, and other creative venues throughout the region.  The concept is that each concert will be a unique experience in a special venue with the location informing the choice of music and performers. \n  \nAs part of the 2025 concert series\, The WORKS Trio musicians invites visual artists to join them for a 15-minute segment of the June 22nd concert. Artists are invited to paint while the musicians play and capture this musical moment through brushstroke. She’s served as concertmaster of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s since 1983\, and has soloed with many orchestras including the symphonies of San Francisco and St. Louis and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. From 1999-2006 she was the music director of the New Century Chamber Orchestra\, and as a founding member of the Ridge Quartet she was nominated for a Grammy and the recipient of the Diapason d’Or Award for the quartet’s recording of Dvorak’s piano quintets with Rudolf Firkusny. “Her deep notes were rich and melancholy… there was a tender exuberance in both tumbles of notes and sustained phrases… a dramatic interplay of ferocity and light slyness.” – The New York Times\, May ‘14 \n  \nJessica Troy\, Violinist\, wears many freelance hats. Brooks Marcus (aka J Why) is a multi-instrumentalist and composer who studied jazz\, classical\, electronic and experimental music at California Institute of the Arts\, Berklee College of Music\, and San Francisco State University. \nHe has composed for film\, dance\, puppet theater and podcasts.  \nCollaborators have included theater director and playwright Theresa Chavez\, dance filmmaker Susan Osberg\, musician and composer Julz A\, dance filmmaker Anna Brady Nuse\, filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev\, and choreographer Sasha Welsh.  \nIn 2017 he formed the collaborative production duo Obsidian Soundsystem with musician and engineer Jonny Taylor. He is a member of 3rd Bell quartet combining jazz\, world\, and electronic music\, The David Sanford Big Band with the recently released “A Prayer for Lester Bowie”\, Neil Alexander’s X Ensemble a modern Chamber Jazz Octet and from 1988-2004 The New Century Saxophone Quartet.   \nIn May of 2024 Brad performed the World Premiere of his “Concerto for Baritone Saxophone and Concert Band.”  He has commissioned and premiered Benjamin Boone’s “Concerto for Baritone Saxophone and Orchestra” as well as pieces from Sherwood Shaffer\, Monica Ashton\, Mark Taylor and Michael Bellar and is also a composer and performer with Composers Concordance in New York City.  \nAs a sideman Brad has appeared with a broad range of artists including Corey Glover of Living Colour\, Nancy Wilson\, Pinetop Perkins\, Joe Lovano\, Lew Tabackin\, Lenny Pickett\, Boots Randolph\, Roy Clark\, The Monica Ashton Jazz Band among others.   \nBrad is currently the Woodwind Instructor at The Beacon Music Factory in Beacon NY\, where he lives with his family. \n  \nGwen Laster – violinist\, composer\, teaching artist.  Gwen Laster is a nationally acclaimed musician who has been the recipient of awards by the National Endowment for the Arts\, MPower Sphinx\, Jubilation Foundation\, Puffin Foundation\, Arts Mid-Hudson\, Lila Wallace\, and the Cognac Hennessey 1st place Jazz Search. She began her love for improvising and composing because of her parents’ love of jazz\, blues\, soul and classical music played endlessly on the record player and her progressive jazz music educators from Detroit’s public schools. Gwen Laster is many things: A virtuoso violinist with exquisite taste. An adventurous composer\, arranger and orchestrator. A classically trained artist with a deep appreciation for America’s musical history\, and a scholar of African- American musical heritage. A socially conscious activist and educator who understands the power of music to reach and touch everyday people. \nHer playing is poignant\, descriptive and always relevant. Perhaps that’s why she has recorded and performed with the world’s most influential artists. DESCRIPTION:Flamenco Music and Dance  \nSunday July 7\,  2024 – 3pm  \nBlooming Grove UCC\,  2 Old Dominion Road\, Blooming Grove\, NY  10914 \nAccessibility:  Accessible entrance on the west side of the building.  Bathrooms in the basement are accessible via wheelchair lift. \nTRIO ANDALUZ – FLAMENCO is comprised of the 3 accomplished artists presented today\, all trained in the rigorous study and practice of Flamenco Music and Dance.  These dynamic musicians and dancer have a rich history of working together in different ensembles and dance companies\,  celebrating the ancient art forms of the Iberian Peninsula.  There will be a Q & A after the show. \n  \nDaniel Pimentel began playing guitar at the age of 12 and later took lessons in Mexico and in Spain with prominent teachers such as Manolo Sanlúcar\, José Antonio Rodríguez\, Gerardo Núñez and Antonio Rey among others.  Throughout his career he has trained in musical styles such as jazz\, classical and Mexican music as well as the classic Flamenco style. \nHis work includes a Tribute to Federico García Lorca\, El Cristo Andaluz\, Bodas de Sangre and Gypsies in pursuit. Daniel has collaborated with Flamenco artists such as Lucero Hernández\, Natalia Loza\, Fernando Martínez\, Las Cabales de Guadalajara\, Leo and Juan Treviño\, Erika Suarez as well as the Flamenco Companies of María Elena Anaya\, El Club España\, Marién Luévano\, Natalia Loza and Caña y Candela among others. He also worked with artists in other musical genres such as Joe Lovano\, Judi Silvano\, Juan Gabriel\, María José and Paco de María. \nHe has performed all over Mexico\, Madrid and Toledo\, Spain\, Quito\, Ecuador as well as New York and Chicago.  Daniel has recorded and released 7 albums of music\, including “A mi Aire” (2010) and “Sentimiento Flamenco” (2017). \n  \nNatalia Loza dancer\, born in Mexico City\, graduated from the National Dance School\, completing her training with masters such as María Elena Anaya\, Gabriel Blanco\, Silvia Martín\, Paloma Macías\, Olinka Trueba\, among others. She was invited to be part of the teaching staff\, teaching Stylized Dance and Stage Practices to the students of the Spanish Dance Degree. \nDuring her training she studied Spanish dance and Flamenco with teachers including Guadalupe Gómez (first dancer at the Madrid Conservatory)\, Manuel Reyes\, Mariano Bernal\, Ángeles Gabaldón\, Daniel Doña and Ana Lopéz\, among others.  In 2012 she took bata de cola and shawl classes with teacher Milagros Menjibar at the famed Cristina Heeren Foundation in Seville\, Spain. \nNatalia is one of the most outstanding dancers with mastery of the castanet in both Mexico and the American continent and she has performed in the major theaters in Mexico such as Bellas Artes\, Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City\, Guadalajara\, Cancun\, Queretaro\, Puebla and Los Cabos. \n  \nAlfonso Cid\, Flamenco singer and flute player. His mother and grandfather were his earliest influences. He attended classes at the prestigious Torres-Macarena Flamenco social club in Seville starting in 1987.  \nAlfonso also studied solfege singing and flute at the Seville Music Conservatory and was awarded two scholarships to study at the Cristina Heeren Foundation for Flamenco Art in Seville\, Spain.  \nHe has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center Out of Doors\, Town Hall\, London’s Royal Albert Hall\, Sala Covarrubias in Mexico City. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 1st  3:00pm \nSeligmann Center\, 23 White Oak Drive (Sugar Loaf)\, Chester\, NY.  \nThis venue is ADA Accessible. \n  \nHilary Brown-Istrefi is a Canadian-American director\, choreographer\, performer\, and educator. She is a graduate of École de danse contemporaine de Montréal\, and over the last decade has performed in the works of Melissa Riker\, Judi Silvano\, Bouchra Ouizguen\, Jillian Peña\, Doug Elkins\, Linda Tegg\, and Candice Breitz. In 2013\, she co-founded the award-winning performance collective\, Same As Sister (S.A.S.)\, with her twin sister Briana Brown-Tipley. Their interdisciplinary commissions have been presented internationally in the US\, Canada\, Italy\, Greece\, and France. Hilary initiated HB² PROJECTS in 2017\, as a choreographic platform to expand her collaborations in performance. \nLamy Istrefi is a NYC-based drummer\, percussionist\, and composer originally from Mitrovice\, Kosovo. Istrefi attended the University of Music and Dramatic Arts Graz (KUG) in Austria before moving to the US. He is currently a member of Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and composer Joe Lovano’s Trio/Quartet\, and has performed and toured internationally with renowned musical artists Mark Murphy\, Sheila Jordan\, Dennis Irwin\, Butch Morris\, Juini Booth\, Jay Clayton\, Greg Tardy\, James Hurt\, Judi Silvano and Leo Genovese\, among others. \nTeri Roiger is a jazz vocalist\, pianist\, and lyricist. Her five albums have all met with critical acclaim\, as have her performances at festivals and top New York jazz spots. Her recordings show her uncommon knowledge\, appreciation\, and deep love for the artistry of Billie Holiday\, Abbey Lincoln\, and Thelonious Monk. Teri has an intuitive laid back sense of time reminiscent of Abbey Lincoln and Betty Carter but with her own uniqueness. JACK DEJOHNETTE (legendary jazz drummer). \nJohn Menegon is a Bassist & Composer who began his career in Montreal. After moving to New York City\, he spent 10 years playing for legendary tenor players Dewey Redman and David Fathead Newman. Since then\, his recordings as a bandleader have all met with critical acclaim\, and his latest project showcases his brilliant compositions. New York bassist JOHN MENEGON is in the line of George Mraz and Michael Moore; a harmonically sophisticated bassist with technical facility who swings hard when it’s called for.
