(Presenters TBC.) \nPlease join the artists at Wallkill River Center for the Arts on Saturday\, September 19th\, starting at 2 PM for this lively conversation and walk through the galleries. \n  \nJuror’s Statement \nAssemblage is art that is made by assembling disparate elements—often everyday objects—scavenged by the artist or bought specially. Tate Museum \nIn a way\, one could say that we start our first puzzle when egg and sperm find each other and we end it when we die and our bodies fit back into the earth. In between\, it seems we’re pretty much continually trying to solve issues both big and small: \nWe’re out of milk again. Who will go to the store? \nMy car died. Who can take me to the airport? \nIt’s hot out. How can we cool down the planet? \nOur country is at war. How can we find peace? \nMany pieces in this show express how artists are coping\, as well as solving\, these issues. Melissa Stern’s PINK LEG shows assembly and fit through absence. The person she creates is barely there\, yet she is literally still kicking. Lucy Handley’s Prosperity puzzles together a shrine to wealth and comfort\, while giving off a beautiful Miss-Havisham-dustiness. \nThrough small acts of repetition\, Jeannine Bardo’s Dawn No. 45 seems to express a wish to stitch the days together into an orderly and cohesive whole. Similarly\, Jennifer McGregor’s Thetford Interlude gathers and reuses wool as a sort of clock or chronicle of life. Melanie Delgado’s excellently titled Another Load Of Laundry evokes a calendar of another type\, that of messy\, ceaseless labor. Linda Stillman’s piece Maples On The Move continues her long history as an artist who pieces together an ever-changing natural world. \nWith this show\, I hope to express an appreciation for how human beings continue to think their way forward despite challenges. \n– Elizabeth Keithline \n  \nAbout the Juror and solo exhibitor\, Elizabeth Keithline: Artist and arts administrator Elizabeth Keithline’s work focuses on human self-extension and human systems of all kinds – architecture\, technology\, cars\, the modern built environment – particularly as those systems tie to the natural world. \nShe has shown widely in the United States including solo shows at ChaShaMa NYC\, Governors Island NY\, the Peabody Essex Museum\, the Danforth Museum\, the Newport Art Museum\, Jane Street Art Center\, the Waiting Room in New Orleans\, Blue Star Contemporary in San Antonio\, ArtPrize Grand Rapids\, Real Art Ways in Hartford\, and UMass Amherst. Her work has been well reviewed in the New York Times\, Sculpture Magazine\, Hyperallergic\, the Boston Globe\, Fiberarts\, and others.

DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Keithline | MEET THE ARTIST and solve the puzzle! \nSaturday\, September 12th\, 2 pm \nElizabeth Keithline is at Wallkill River Center for the Arts on Saturday\, September 12\, 2:00 PM where she will casually discuss her solo exhibition\, Puzzle – while working on a puzzle! This exhibit and the accompanying group show\, Keep It Together\, present assemblage artworks using found paint and materials.  Both exhibitions examine how people create systems of order out of chaos\, how they solve problems and navigate life’s challenges within the metaphor of repurposed materials. \n  \nAbout Elizabeth Keithline: \nElizabeth Keithline has been a weaver since the age of 14. In 1996\, she pioneered a unique sculpture technique: weaving heavy-gauge wire around large objects and then burning them out. Her artistic practice now includes painting\, public art\, and installation work. Keithline is fascinated by abstraction—how far ideas can stretch\, how many multiples of a single thought can be expressed\, and how viewers engage with abstraction as they perceive an idea and then carry it away with them. \nPuzzle marks Keithline’s 23rd solo exhibition\, and Keep It Together will be her 23rd juried or curated group show. She has exhibited widely across the United States\, with solo shows for the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation\, ChaShaMa NYC\, Jane Street Art Center\, (Saugerties\, NY)\, Peabody Essex Museum\, Danforth Museum\, Newport Art Museum\, Waiting Room Gallery (New Orleans)\, Blue Star Contemporary (San Antonio)\, ArtPrize (Grand Rapids)\, Real Art Ways\, UMass Amherst\, and Wheaton College. \nElizabeth Keithline has been reviewed by The New York Times\, Hyperallergic\, Sculpture Magazine\, The Boston Globe\, The Hartford Courant\, and more.

Only 100 tickets are sold and by randomly drawing tickets during the event\, each ticket holder selects an original work of art as their ticket number is pulled. DESCRIPTION:ARTIST TALK | Ransome in Conversation with REMEMBER WHEN Artists \nSaturday\, July 18th\, 4 pm \nRansome\, juror of this year’s national exhibit REMEMBER WHEN\, will participate in a conversation with invited artists about their respective artistic practices at the Wallkill River Center for the Arts on Saturday\, July 18\, starting at 4:00 PM. \n  \nMeet the JUROR: Ransome \n\nMy artwork centers on my African-American lineage\, which is traced back to sharecroppers of the American South who migrated to Northern cities along the East Coast. My pictorial narratives are personal\, yet the symbols I use are universal and interplay with larger social\, racial\, ancestral\, economic\, and political histories that inform our nation to this day. The history of my family is the history of black Americans\, which is the history of all of North America. \nIn my works\, I often combine acrylic paint with an array of found\, made\, and purchased papers. The materials I use are conceptual statements on this legacy of an often-overlooked portion of society that made something out of nothing. \nBoth my representational and abstract works incorporate a variety of symbols\, patterns\, and marks to create powerful images filled with the rhythmic properties of music that weave throughout my oeuvre. Born in a generation infused by soul and R&B music\, I grew up hearing rap music that freely sampled the music of my childhood\, mixing and recomposing these songs to create rhythms befitting to hip hop music. In my work\, my natural instinct is to paint and collage on the same surface\, applying the same spontaneity of hip hop deejays and the resourcefulness of rural quilters\, who use what is at hand\, assembling\, collaging\, and creating. \nWhile made of the energy of contemporary culture\, my work is also influenced by Abstract Expressionism and draws from the soulfulness of the quilts from the women of Gee’s Bend. For me\, there is a visual rhythm to layering these antipodes: found versus purchased objects\, figures versus abstract\, paint versus paper\, busy versus quiet. My work aims to imbue each piece with a lyrical yet authentic resilience borne of limited resources and frugality that speaks to the struggle and hope\, pain\, joy\, and soul of folks in the black community. \n–​ \nA graduate from Pratt Institute\, Ransome served as a tenured professor in the School of Visual Performing Arts at Syracuse University before retiring to pursue his dreams of being a studio artist. DESCRIPTION:Color My World: Watercolors by Ellen Joyce-Trayer \n  \nArtist Statement \nThese works are Experimental Watercolors which I’ve been working on this past decade. It is a form of deconstruction….breaking through edges and form to distort reality. The paint can be dripped\, splashed\, splattered\, glazed\, brushed or pulled on the paper surface. The paper is often manipulated to direct the flow of the paint. Intentionally observing what otherwise might be missed in our everyday environment can yield a deeper appreciation when seen through artistic interpretation. It’s so easy to stop noticing the things closest to home because they have become so familiar. DESCRIPTION:INTERIORS\, A National Exhibition Juried by Wayne Lempka\, Art Collections Manager at The Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz\, on view September 5 – October 26\, 2025. \nParticipating artists: Richard Arnold\, Donna Faranda\, Carl Grauer\, Yona Gonen\, Lonna Kelly\, Pat MacDonald\, Karen Maloof\, Dan McCormack\, Emilia Moritz\, Mary-Anne Ramirez\, Steven Rushefsky\, Gerald Wein\, Anna West\, Amanda Wolf \nJUROR’S STATEMENT: \nTo understand this exhibition\, one must first contemplate the definition of the word “interiors”. \nOn a basic level this word refers to the spaces we live in\, a home that has rooms consisting of four walls\, windows and doors. If you ask a child to draw a room interior\, in most cases this is what you will get. However\, the meaning of ‘interiors’ is not an easy concept to isolate as it encompasses a broad sphere of emotional experiences\, sensory perceptions\, memories and feelings of nostalgia. \nThe works selected for this exhibition not only fulfill the basic idea of what an interior is but go beyond this concept due to how each artist approaches these spaces – as seen through unique interior or exterior vantage points. These works are not simply documents of what one holds dear in interior spaces but records a sense of life; a sense of being; and a sense of place. \nTaken as a whole\, this exhibition is meant to be a visual investigation into beauty\, personal narrative\, and memory. These paintings\, mixed media pieces\, and photographs provide one with a sense of humor\, power\, weakness\, and mystery. As a viewer\, you are asked to consider an entire range of visual and emotional experiences that room interiors invoke in each of us and then relate these experiences to one’s personal space. \n– Wayne Lempka \n  \nMeet the JUROR: Wayne Lempka is Art Collections Manager of the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at the State University of New York at New Paltz where he is responsible for the care of over 9\,000 objects in the museum’s permanent collection. He has also served as curator at The Dorsky for many exhibitions including Thoughts of Home\, which explored not only how our living environments reflect who we are but how artists use this idea in their creative expression. Prior to his position at The Dorsky\, Mr. Lempka held positions at Storm King Art Center\, the Museum of American Folk Art\, the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design\, (Smithsonian Institute) the Chase Manhattan Bank Corporate Art Program\, The Historic New Orleans Collection and the Barrett Art Center. Mr. Lempka is currently a lecturer in the Department of Art History at Marist University. He has also taught in the Art History Department of SUNY New Paltz. Mr. Lempka holds a BFA degree in Fine Arts and Art History from Pratt Institute\, and a MA in Art History & Museum Studies from New York University. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 31st \n10am – 12pm \n  \nArtist\, curator\, and arts administrator Elizabeth Keithline has been at work in the art world since she graduated Emerson College in the 80’s. Join her to discuss your goals. Do you want a connection with galleries or museums? Are you trying to get press or shows? Let’s unpack your questions about how to further your career! \n  \nThis event is free and open to the public with donations to support arts programming encouraged. \n  \n\n  \nAbout Elizabeth Keithline | Artist and arts administrator Elizabeth Keithline’s work focuses on human self-extension and human systems of all kinds – architecture\, technology\, cars\, the modern built environment – particularly as those systems tie to the natural world. \nShe has shown widely in the United States including solo shows at ChaShaMa NYC\, Governors Island NY\, the Peabody Essex Museum\, the Danforth Museum\, the Newport Art Museum\, Jane Street Art Center\, the Waiting Room in New Orleans\, Blue Star Contemporary in San Antonio\, ArtPrize Grand Rapids\, Real Art Ways in Hartford\, and UMass Amherst. Her work has been well reviewed in the New York Times\, Sculpture Magazine\, Hyperallergic\, the Boston Globe\, Fiberarts\, and others. \nDoing business as Wheel Arts Administration\, Keithline has connected artists to opportunities through the following: \nShe has curated exhibitions for Mark Miller Gallery\, SPRING/BREAK Art Show\, Boxo Projects NY\, Mobius Boston\, and Wheaton College. From 2008–2021\, she was the RI State Council On the Arts Percent for Art Director; the Project Grants to Organizations Director; and from 2014 to 2021\, the State Cultural Facilities Grants Director\, managing a budget of $45 million. Most recently in the Hudson Valley\, she served as Exhibitions Director at the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum from 2021 to 2024\, and she recently assisted McGregor Consulting with its public art plan for the City of Kingston. \nOther clients include the New England Foundation for the Arts\, the Barr Foundation\, the Downtown Boston Business Improvement District\, Art in the Park Worcester\, the Providence Foundation\, the Gilbane Corporation\, and the Charles River Conservancy. Keithline has written for Sculpture Magazine\, Public Art Review\, Art New England\, and the Americans for the Arts blog. \n  \n \nWallkill River Center for the Arts programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \n
