SUMMARY:Carl Grauer\, Portraits: The Art of Looking
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibit of portraits by Carl Grauer.  On View: December 20\, 2024 – January 26\, 2025.  Gallery hours:  Friday\, Saturday and Sundays 12:00-5:00 pm  Reception:  Saturday\, January 11\, 2025 3:00-5:00 pm.  Receptions are always free and open to the public. \nStatement and Bio \nCarl Grauer is a painter based in Poughkeepsie\, NY in the beautiful Hudson Valley. He explores the construction of identity\, and how to memorialize objects and individuals through a contemporary documentarian approach to painting. He focuses on the documentation of time\, memory\, and imagination and how he may occupy the past\, present\, and future through these aspects. He is interested in the observation of that evolution of time and how it affects the artifice of the presentation of self\, and finally\, how by creating a painting\, the art acquires an identity and timeline of its own. \nBorn in rural Kansas\, Carl Grauer was raised in a town of 700 people and a graduating class of sixteen. He had a great aptitude of studies as well as art from a very young age but with a limited exposure to the arts. Following high school graduation he left to complete his degrees in human biology and his MFA from the University of Kansas and the University of Michigan\, respectively. Eventually moving to New York City he found solace in the arts and culture in abundance. He spent two years in London studying figurative and portrait painting with several studios and garnered success showing work internationally\, including exhibiting with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in London\, being shortlisted for the 2015 Wells Art Contemporary Award in the UK. Carl Grauer is a painter based in Poughkeepsie\, NY in the beautiful Hudson Valley. \n

SUMMARY:Likeness
DESCRIPTION:Group Exhibit of Portraits juried by Carl Grauer. \nPortraits are forever. They capture the likeness of the human subject they are portraying. It may be through a visual similarity with the sitter or the ephemeral essence of the subject. Portrait artists bring all kinds of intangible aspects to their work. The fact that we can look at a painting done hundreds of years ago and feel a kinship with the sitter\, in our contemporary moment\, is a testament to the power of portraiture. \nOn View: December 20\, 2024 – January 26\, 2025 \nReception:  Saturday\, January 11\, 2025 3:00-5:00 pm \nReceptions are always free and open to the public. \nGallery hours:  Friday\, Saturday and Sundays 12:00-5:00 pm

SUMMARY:Jena Argenta: Love Letters
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit of new works by Jena Argenta.  On view November 1st through December 15th.   Artists Reception Saturday\, November 9\, 2024 3-5:00 pm. Receptions are always free and open to the public.  Artist talk on December 15th.  The gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment. \nMulti-hyphenate\, language-based artist Jena Argenta will bring her most recent work in progress to Wallkill River Center for the Arts (WRCA) in stages beginning November 1\, 2024. The show titled LOVE LETTERS will feature work produced with funds from a 2024 Individual Artist grant. \n“How do you write a love letter in American Ink? is an intentionally fraught question— but it’s also the one we’re faced with\,” states Argenta. \nThe artist continues\, “The works presented here aren’t an answer to the question – they’re an attempt at asking. They’re a way of using multiple art forms as a way toward that asking. Works here were born in dialogue with community voices\, as well as historical\, literary\, and often banned or unrequited “lovers”. \n“In many parts of the world\, calligraphy is the highest art. Calligraphic forms & traditions are “love letters” in the deepest sense. In this series\, I seek to bend my own vantage point\, hand\, and English with brush\, reed\, sentiment\, and the use of empty space.” \nArgenta is a world-traveled artist\, whose vast experiences and adventures include apprenticeships in Arabic Calligraphy with Elinor Aishah Holland in NY and Ahmet Bursali in Istanbul. Her visual work has been privately and commercially commissioned internationally as well as in the US. Her Kimono designs walked the red carpet at the Fez Music Festival in Morocco. \n“We are so pleased to be able to provide gallery space for Jena to bring this unique and deeply felt work to the public. It comes to us\nin increments\, starting with several works on display during our regularly scheduled artists’ reception on November 9th and culminating in additional works and an artist’s talk (on) December 15th” says Sarah Fortner Pierson\, WRCA executive director. \n\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program\, a program of the New York Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by Arts Mid-Hudson. \n  \n

She worked in her family’s citrus orchards until an unseasonable frost killed the trees in 1982. This loss changed the trajectory of her career from farmer to artist. She went to art school at University of North Texas in Denton\, and studied Semiotics with artist Vernon Fisher\, then transferred to San Francisco Art Institute in 1987. Her real education happened as an artist’s apprentice in SoHo section of NY where she worked in several artist’s studios until leaving the city for the beautiful farmlands North of the city and began teaching plein air classes in 2000\, and continues weekly to this day in Tampa Bay.  She founded a plein air school with an Arts and Agricultural mission based on the historic Hudson River School\, called the Wallkill River School of Art. It still exists today as a nonprofit arts organization with a mission of bringing cultural tourism to the Hudson Valley region through plein air painting workshops and events on local farms\, historic sites and open spaces. Joyce has won many prestigious awards for plein air painting\, and is a signature member of New York Plein Air Painters (NYPAP)\, and International Plein Air Painters (IPAP)\, and Pastel Society of Tampa Bay (PSTB). She has been featured in many national newspapers and magazines like the New York Times\, Plein Air Magazine\, Plein Air Podcast with Eric Rhoads\, Pastel Journal Magazine\, Tampa Bay Magazine. She is represented by six galleries around the country including Wallkill River School in NY\, Woodfield Fine Art in St. Pete\, and Lakeside Inn Gallery in Mount Dora\, FL. She teaches workshops in pastel and plein air techniques across the country in Staunton\, VA\, Olana\, NY\, Tampa Bay Florida\, and is included in museum collections in the Georges Pompidou Museum in France and the Museum of Modern Art in NY. She recently won the Creative Pinellas grant for established artists in 2023\, Best in Show for Central Florida Pastel Society Annual Exhibit\, and Best in Show for 2024 Pastel Society of Tampa Bay Annual Exhibit.

SUMMARY:Donna Prizzi: Floral Impressions
DESCRIPTION:Solo exhibit of works by Donna Prizzi on view  September 6\, 2024 – October 27\, 2024 \nThe gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment. \nArtists Reception Saturday\, September 14\, 2024 5:00-7:00 pm. Receptions are always free and open to the public. \nArtist Statement: \nIn the quiet life of inanimate objects\, seemingly still and motionless\, lives a story or narrative that can create a connection to our home\, family\, friends\, culture\, or customs.  It can elicit a visceral response that often invokes the senses.  Weather looking at a painting of food\, flowers\, or the humble objects that surround our daily lives\, we can find the subjective connection to a place\, a time\, or a moment.  As life impatiently careens forward and we are increasingly connected (or disconnected) by the labyrinth of technology\, painting the still life is a meditative process that connects me to the past\, present and future through the contemplative interpretation of its meaning\, its aesthetic form and its significance.  This show\, “Floral Impressions” is an expression of gratitude for the simple blessings and subtle beauty that exists in our everyday lives. \n  \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Peter A. Kopher\, Legacy Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Retrospective exhibit honoring the photographic work of the late Peter A. Kopher. \nThe exhibit is on view July 5\, 2024 – September 1\, 2024 \nThe gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment. \nArtists Reception Saturday\, July 13\, 2024 5:00-7:00 pm. Receptions are always free and open to the public. \n \nBiography: \nPeter A. Kopher of Warwick NY\, passed away on January 2\, 2023 at the age of 66 years old.  Peter  was an integral part of the Orange County\, NY arts scene.  He was a member of Wallkill River Center for the Arts and exhibited regularly and notably won First Place in the People’s Choice Award for his photograph “Into the Mist” in 2021.  Peter was also active in the Goshen Art League and the Warwick Art League. \nPeter A. Kopher had an insightful and astute eye as a photographer.   He was particularly talented at photographing ordinary objects but through incisive\, minimalist inspired composition and selective use of the view finder\, he elevated humble scenes\, and revealed them to be ironic\, contemplative\, sometimes humorous and often elegant. \nHe was also an avid swimmer and hiker\, managing to hike the NY\, NJ\, and PA portions of the Appalachian Trail. He adored nature; his favorite book was “Walden” by Thoreau. He most often found his own true self while walking outdoors. He was a great lover of animals\, including his two beloved rescue cats\, Cassie and Prudence. He was a devoted son\, brother\, father and husband. \nBorn in Rockville Centre\, NY on September 29\, 1956\, he was the son of Raymond and Joan (Creeden) Kopher.  Peter attended school in Farmingdale\, New York. He participated in several high school theatrical productions and also earned a high NYSSMA rating for his sousaphone playing. After high school graduation\, Peter received a scholarship to the New York Institute of Technology\, where he studied Communication Arts. He searched for work combining his love of theatre with his technical skills\, and eventually earned his union card for membership in Local #1\, the International Actors and Theatre Stage Union (IATSE). In a career spanning 30 years as a stagehand and lighting assistant\, he had countless fascinating stories to tell. He was a hard worker and well respected among his colleagues. His work credits included MTV\, Silent Library\, a one-year stint with the Broadway production of Les Miz\, The Rachael Ray Show\, Lighting Director for the Jon Stewart show\, Project Runway\, lighting the big tree at Rockefeller Center\, SNL\, the US Open tennis tournament\, and countless other free-lance jobs. Peter and his wife\, Sally\, became residents of Warwick NY in 2013\, following a move from Seaford\, NY after Superstorm Sandy displaced him from his home – a roomy and unique housebarge which was moored on the Great South Bay. \nPeter is survived by his wife of 11 years\, Sally (McCalmont) Kopher; twin daughters Caitlin Wilmot and  her husband Josh of Rochester\, NY; and Cristin Kopher of New York\, NY; step-daughters Sarah Sica and  her husband Ramiro Flores of Brooklyn and Anna Sica of Fairfield\, IA; grandson Bradley Wilmot; and sister Linda Finch of Columbia\, SC. He was predeceased by his parents and sister Laurie Parrish. \n  \n

Their inherent flimsiness and the futility of their mission is endearing\,” says Colby.  This exhibition shifts the viewer’s experience from the small screen to the gallery wall.  Her photos have been on Instagram since 2014 (@sparkleshow). \nArtist Biography: \nPrevious artistic endeavors include “Aesthetic Technicians\,” a shared exhibition with visual artist Sas Colby at the The Space in Oakland\, CA (1980); “Losers Weepers\,” a public access cable call-in show celebrating found objects with Lizzy Yoder in NYC (1995-97) and the “Donkey Show\,” a collaboration with Robin Bordie featuring modified paintings at La Serena\, Mallorca\, Spain (2017). SUMMARY:Amy Silberkleit: Last Winter\, Scenes and Objects from Outside
DESCRIPTION:Solo exhibit of works by Amy Silberkleit\, on view May 3\, 2024 – June 30\, 2024.  Artists Reception Saturday\, May 11\, 2024 5:00-7:00 pm.  Receptions are always free and open to the public. \nThe gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment. \nAmy Silberkleit is an artist in the Northern Catskills. Her work is based on the forests\, mountains\, roads\, trails and natural objects found near her home. The extraordinary beauty of the region\, the variety of plants\, forms and textures\, the dramatic changes from season to season are an inexhaustible source of subjects for her work.  She draws detailed landscapes on limestone blocks and hand-prints limited editions in her lithography studio. The tonal range made possible by the lithography stone’s fine texture lends itself perfectly to highly detailed representational drawings. In each piece\, she tries to capture a moment in time while showing the effect of light\, water and temperature on different elements in the landscape. Her intention is to draw the viewer in; to find a place in the landscape and observe the beauty of the natural world. An avid hiker\, she particularly enjoys walking through the forest in winter. Without leaves and undergrowth\, covered in snow\, the contours of the land are revealed. The tones and textures of the landscape stand out when they aren’t overwhelmed by the colors of other seasons. \nAmy has a B.A. in printmaking and a Certificate in Natural Science Art and Illustration from the New York Botanical Gardens. Her drawings and prints have been exhibited in juried shows\, galleries and museums.  Amy is a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists and an Active Member of The Woodstock Artists Association.

This poetic imagery serves as a metaphor for the delicate interplay between humanity and nature. Much like Oliver’s portrayal\, my work delves into the sublime and peaceful merging of boundaries\, inviting viewers to contemplate moments of communion\, impermanence\, and metamorphosis. \nI find my inspiration in the rich traditions of ancient art\, medieval bestiaries\, and 18th- century natural science histories. The heart of my studio practice lies in the techniques of drawing and printmaking\, encompassing drypoints\, etchings\, monotypes\, and experimental collages. By exploring the coexistence of our “Small Kingdoms\,” my art serves as a mirror to the intricate tapestry of our existence in this tragic\, mysterious\, and beautiful world. \nArtist Biography: \nSusan Siegel (b. 1964\, Los Angeles\, California) creates work that engages our connection to the natural world.
