SUMMARY:Legacy Exhibit | George Hayes and Gene Bove
DESCRIPTION:Wallkill River Center for the Arts (WRCA) annual Legacy Exhibit\, on view February 21 through March 22\, 2026 features two well-loved and dearly missed artists\, George Hayes and Gene Bove.  \n  \nGeorge Hayes started painting with what was then the Wallkill River School in 2003\, often arriving at plein air class on his motorcycle. “Besides being hella cool\, George was a genuinely nice person\,” enthused Shawn Dell Joyce\, founding WRCA executive director.    \nHayes was known to take new artists under his wing and freely share techniques. He often demonstrated perspective to newbies and was soon hired to demonstrate for the plein air series. It wasn’t long before he developed a following\, and started teaching classes. George made himself invaluable in the office as well\, and was soon on regular rotation as office staff.  \n“George was more than a friend to most of us\,” continued Dell Joyce.  “He was respectful and kind to all. He made us all better people\, whether in the board meetings or out plein air painting.” \n  \nGene Bove joined “Landscapes on Location” at their third outing in Pine Bush in 2001. His wife Marilyn\, saw a write up in the paper and signed them both up. Both became invaluable to forming the fledgling Wallkill River School. Gene had a strong background in advertising and immediately became an asset designing printed matter and ads for the organization. Gene brought a hilarious sense of humor and deep love of painting to the group. He became a partner in the original LLC founded in 2004\, then a founder of the nonprofit in 2008.  \nBove was in high demand and the most popular teacher for many years. Dell Joyce remembers her friend and colleague fondly\, “Gene greeted every situation with his humor and good nature. He kept us all in stitches and giggles while painting.” \n  \nOPENING RECEPTION\nSaturday\, February 21st\, 3 – 5 pm \nPlease join us to view the works and celebrate these artists who were integrally involved with WRCA; light refreshments will be served. \n  \nThe WRCA galleries and art reception are always free and open to the public. \nGallery hours: Friday – Sunday\, 12 – 5 pm

SUMMARY:Color My World: Watercolors by Ellen Joyce-Trayer
DESCRIPTION:Color My World: Watercolors by Ellen Joyce-Trayer \n  \nArtist Statement \nThese works are Experimental Watercolors which I’ve been working on this past decade. It is a form of deconstruction….breaking through edges and form to distort reality. The paint can be dripped\, splashed\, splattered\, glazed\, brushed or pulled on the paper surface. The paper is often manipulated to direct the flow of the paint. Since the results are not always in the artist’s control\, the artist must abandon control and be open to take creative detours as the painting reveals itself. \nUltimately\, it is about creating a successful painting which often means the artist must allow the painting and the paint to inform the final creation. \n  \n\nOn view October 31 – extended to December 28\, 2025\n \nGallery hours: Friday – Sunday\,  12 – 5 pm \n  \nImage: Ellen Joyce-Trayer\, Sunset in Africa\, watercolor on paper

SUMMARY:Rosemary Hanson: Home
DESCRIPTION:Rosemary Hanson: Home\n\n“Learning to look” is one of the most fundamental principles for any artist. Intentionally observing what otherwise might be missed in our everyday environment can yield a deeper appreciation when seen through artistic interpretation. It’s so easy to stop noticing the things closest to home because they have become so familiar. But if we stop and change perspective and focus on the little things in our lives\, we can discover beauty and value in what was before mundane. \nOn view September 5 – October 26\, 2025\nGallery hours: Friday – Sunday\,  1 – 5 pm \n\nArtist Reception: Saturday\, September 13\, 5 – 7 pm \nJoin us to celebrate the exhibition and meet the artist; small bites and light refreshment will be served. SUMMARY:INTERIORS
DESCRIPTION:INTERIORS\, A National Exhibition Juried by Wayne Lempka\, Art Collections Manager at The Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz\, on view September 5 – October 26\, 2025. \nParticipating artists: Richard Arnold\, Donna Faranda\, Carl Grauer\, Yona Gonen\, Lonna Kelly\, Pat MacDonald\, Karen Maloof\, Dan McCormack\, Emilia Moritz\, Mary-Anne Ramirez\, Steven Rushefsky\, Gerald Wein\, Anna West\, Amanda Wolf \nJUROR’S STATEMENT: \nTo understand this exhibition\, one must first contemplate the definition of the word “interiors”. \nOn a basic level this word refers to the spaces we live in\, a home that has rooms consisting of four walls\, windows and doors. If you ask a child to draw a room interior\, in most cases this is what you will get. However\, the meaning of ‘interiors’ is not an easy concept to isolate as it encompasses a broad sphere of emotional experiences\, sensory perceptions\, memories and feelings of nostalgia. \nThe works selected for this exhibition not only fulfill the basic idea of what an interior is but go beyond this concept due to how each artist approaches these spaces – as seen through unique interior or exterior vantage points. These works are not simply documents of what one holds dear in interior spaces but records a sense of life; a sense of being; and a sense of place. \nTaken as a whole\, this exhibition is meant to be a visual investigation into beauty\, personal narrative\, and memory. These paintings\, mixed media pieces\, and photographs provide one with a sense of humor\, power\, weakness\, and mystery. As a viewer\, you are asked to consider an entire range of visual and emotional experiences that room interiors invoke in each of us and then relate these experiences to one’s personal space. \n– Wayne Lempka \n  \nMeet the JUROR: Wayne Lempka is Art Collections Manager of the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at the State University of New York at New Paltz where he is responsible for the care of over 9\,000 objects in the museum’s permanent collection. He has also served as curator at The Dorsky for many exhibitions including Thoughts of Home\, which explored not only how our living environments reflect who we are but how artists use this idea in their creative expression. Prior to his position at The Dorsky\, Mr. Lempka held positions at Storm King Art Center\, the Museum of American Folk Art\, the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design\, (Smithsonian Institute) the Chase Manhattan Bank Corporate Art Program\, The Historic New Orleans Collection and the Barrett Art Center. Mr. Lempka is currently a lecturer in the Department of Art History at Marist University. He has also taught in the Art History Department of SUNY New Paltz. Mr. Lempka holds a BFA degree in Fine Arts and Art History from Pratt Institute\, and a MA in Art History & Museum Studies from New York University. He is currently pursuing his PhD (ABD) at New York University.  \n\nOn view September 5 – October 26\, 2025\nGallery hours: Friday – Sunday\,  12 – 5 pm \n\nArtist Reception: Saturday\, September 13\, 5 – 7 pm\n\nJoin us to celebrate the exhibition and meet the artists; small bites and light refreshment will be served. SUMMARY:André Junget: Drawings
DESCRIPTION:André Junget: Drawings \nPen and ink is my favorite medium. The idea of creating value with an ink line has always fascinated me. In my view\, nothing else compares to it. Beginning with first seeing the wood engravings of Gustave Doré\, then the British and American book illustrators of the Golden Age of Illustration\, I was hooked! \nI began my career illustrating architecture and products in pen and ink. Working at architecture firms brought me into pencil work. Which I love\, but it’s not ink! I have always claimed that if I could work in one medium for the rest of my life\, it would be pen and ink. \nSo\, I decided to stop talking about it and started a new collection of ink on scratchboard drawings of subjects that excite me! Many of the pieces in this exhibition are from this new collection. \n– André Junget \n  \nAbout the artist: \nAndré Junget: Fine Art drawings\, hand-pulled stone lithographs\, and scratch board works. \nAndré Junget maintains a residence and studio in Beacon\, NY. His work has been featured in numerous books\, magazines\, and other publications and is included in the collections of many interior design and architectural firms. His work offers a rare glimpse into the captivating world of hand-drawn illustration – what he refers to as “the way it used to be.” \nA classic illustrator\, he is a traditionalist with a “twist\,” his work is modern but gives a nod to the past\, reminiscent of great masters including Franklin Booth\, Herbert Railton\, Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue\, William Heath Robinson\, Robert Henri\, and the Ashcan School. \nSelf-taught\, André began his career as a tool and die maker in the Space and Aircraft industry. He later went on to teach perspective at the Institute for the Study of Classical Architecture and has served as illustrator-in-residence at prestigious architectural firms\, including Ferguson and Shamamian\, Hart Howerton\, Roman and Williams\, and GRADE\, NY. \nHis work has been honored with Awards of Excellence from the American Society of Architectural Illustrators\, and was elected to the Society of Illustrators through the support and sponsorship of world-renowned illustrator and educator Murray Tinkelman. In 2017\, Andre was elected into the International Society of Scratchboard Artists and the Pastel Society of America in 2019. \nAndre has begun building a portfolio of fine art prints with Jim Reed\, Master Printmaker at the prestigious Milestone Graphics Studio in Bridgeport\, CT\, creating hand-pulled stone lithograph prints. He continues his work in printmaking with Irene Michnicki at the new Milestone Graphics Studio in New Haven. His hand-pulled stone lithograph print “Fire Escape 1” resides in the permanent collection of the Slater Memorial Museum and Print Club of Albany. \n\nAndré Junget: Drawings | on view July 11 – August 31\, 2025\nGallery hours: Friday – Sunday\, 1 – 5 pm and by appointment \nReception and Meet the Artist | Saturday\, July 12 from 5 – 7 pm\nLight refreshments will be served. SUMMARY:Theresa Gooby: Uncanny Garden
DESCRIPTION:Theresa Gooby: Uncanny Garden explores themes of growth\, transformation\, mystery\, identity and absurdity. In this series of works on paper\, nature and the human connection to the natural world are forefront. These figures in this show challenge the dominant narrative of identity\, allowing elements of the natural world to embody representations of the self. Long held beliefs of traditional propriety are directly at odds with the unstoppable creep of nature. At the same time\, nature is being propelled by the invisible hand of civilization. The characters in Uncanny Garden wink at the viewer\, but Absurdity should not be mistaken for folly. We are living in a time that asks us to accept highly preposterous situations as the norm and we will all have to figure out a way to exist between the two. \n\nTheresa Gooby holds a BFA from the Univ. of New Mexico and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She is the recipient of a 2024 Individual Artist Commission from the NY Statewide Community Regrant Program. In 2020 she received a Dutchess County Executive Award for Artivist of the Year. Among the places her work has been shown are the Samuel L. Dorsky Museum of Art in New Paltz NY\, the Woskob Family Gallery State College PA\, the Puffin Foundation of Teaneck NJ\, and Metro Pictures in NYC. She is the founder and former Director of Beacon Open Studios. Theresa grew up in California and lives in Beacon NY with her family. \n  \nTheresa Gooby: Uncanny Garden | on view July 11 – August 31\, 2025\nGallery hours: Friday – Sunday\, 12 – 5 pm and by appointment \nReception and Meet the Artist | Saturday\, July 12 from 5 – 7 pm\nLight refreshments will be served. SUMMARY:Chris Gonyea: Trees\, Abstract in Nature
DESCRIPTION:I am an artist who is most commonly known for my paintings of trees. I have developed this style over the years through observation and a conscious effort to find the abstract in nature. The landscape has been a source of inspiration\, but I often attempt to reveal a deeper dynamic. Trees have emerged as the motif in which I can explore this possibility. \nThe tree\, itself\, is a living entity\, but in a way\, can be seen as a figure. A tree can become the vertical element in the horizontal landscape as in the formal figure/ground relationship. Within this context\, groupings\, dynamics and subtext occur to me as the images emerge. I try to remain fluid as the paintings develop. The rigid trunks and branches can act as a structure to improvise with and distort. I attempt to create vibrations and rhythm within my forests that may resonate with the viewer in a unique way. Another important consideration for me is the element of negative space. The limbs of trees can create connections described through the graphic line. The spaces that surround these are as significant as the forms themselves. Forms and patterns become apparent as one looks deeper into these landscapes. \nI often equate these branches to our own nervous system. I see the forest as a network that bridges the synapse and transfers energy to create a greater whole. The tree\, a figure in the landscape\, is at the same time\, the landscape itself. It is connected as much to the air as it is the earth. I wish to create an image the viewer can enter and with contemplation discover a greater consciousness. Perhaps we cannot just look at the landscape but see it more deeply and derive a deeper connection to the environment around us. \n– Chris Gonyea \n  \nChris Gonyea: Trees\, Abstract in Nature | On view May 2 – June 29\, 2025 \nGallery hours:  Friday – Sunday\, 12-5 pm\n \nReception & Meet the Artist | Saturday\, May 10\, 5 – 7 pm \n  \n  \nImage: Chris Gonyea\, ‘Solstice Sunrise’\, oil  on canvas\, 36 x 48 in.

SUMMARY:Marlene Lipinski: Look to the Woods
DESCRIPTION:I am a nature painter\, but contrary to the tradition I am not  interested in portraying nature from a distance in grand  panoramas and glorious vistas. My interest is in the intimate  connections we have with nature\, the ones we feel when we get  up close. The painting\, The Burr Oak: Spring\, as many of my  pieces\, comes from a series I think of as portraits: trees depicted as  family members or characters to know. I carefully select each  subject for the cultural\, historic or botanical significance. Through  close-up representation\, I invite the viewer to look for a long time  at an individual – a single tree – contemplate the magnificence of  its form\, the beauty of its shapes\, textures\, colors and patterns\,  and psychologically crawl into the work\, feeling the closeness and  intimacy of its habitat\, and the power of what it has given us and what we have taken away. \n– Marlene Lipinski \n  \nLook to the Woods\, Works by Marlene Lipinski  | On view May 2 – June 29\, 2025 \nGallery hours:  Friday – Sunday\, 12-5 pm\n \nReception & Meet the Artist | Saturday\, May 10\, 5 – 7 pm \n  \n

SUMMARY:Forest | Group Exhibit\, Juried by Marlene Lipinski
DESCRIPTION:Juror Marlene Lipinski’s thoughts: \n“I was impressed by the works and could have selected many more for this show. A wide variety of media was in the art work and I tried to reflect that in my choices. The forest experience can be wide and varied. I enjoyed that many aspects of the forest were included in the work. Examples of water in many stages\, light\, tree species\, density verses open areas. One can be in the woods or observe it from afar. Both of these perspectives were present. Strong skills were displayed in the art including composition\, development of form\, rending when applicable\, use of color and light and aerial perspective.” \n  \nExhibiting artists: \nSusan E Baldwin \nNell Shaw Cohen \nJama Hansonbrook \nCynthia Harris-Pagano \nDebra Howard \nJudy Howard \nRenelle Lorray \nLaura Martinez-Bianco \nPam Mather-Cathy \nJoanne Penaluna \nPolly Perkins \nChristine Perrone \nNancy Reed Jones \nMark Rosengarten \nRoberta Rosenthal \nCindy Sumerano \nJoseph Sundwall \nEmily A. SUMMARY:Hopkinesque by Mark Hopkins: Art That Thinks
DESCRIPTION:Mark Hopkins is a regional artist whose style has strong similarities to surrealism\, most notably Salvador Dalí. His work deals with some of the same issues the original surrealists grappled with – the alienation of modernism\, the irrationality of war\, and the study of human psychology. Like the surrealists\, Hopkins engages spontaneous\, creative processes to arrive at novel forms of imagery. Like Dali\, Hopkins’ work features recognizable objects in unrecognizable contexts to elicit an irrational and subconscious reaction or response. \nHopkins’ begins each work with stream-of-consciousness sketches that he carefully works into complex compositions for the canvas. It is only during the painting process that he fully resolves any remaining design issues. \n  \nAbout the artist: Born in Poughkeepsie\, NY\, Mark Hopkins discovered his passion for art early in life\, leading him to graduate with a BA from St. Olaf College in 1981. His journey as an artist has taken him across the globe\, from Asia to Europe\, where he explored diverse cultures and perspectives\, integrating them into his work. Over the decades\, he has painted murals\, created illustrations\, and worked in theater\, film\, and graphic design. Now based in Rhinebeck\, NY\, he focuses on studio work that reflects a lifetime of travel and creative exploration. His art blends realism with abstraction\, influenced by everything from Thai and Balinese culture to modern American life\, seeking to capture the essence of human connection and spirit. \n  \nHopkinesque by Mark Hopkins: Art That Thinks | March 14 – April 27\, 2025 \nReception and meet the artist: Saturday\, March 22nd\, 3 – 5 pm \nGallery hours:  Friday – Sundays\, 12-5 pm \n  \n     \n  \nhttps://www.hopkinesque.com/

SUMMARY:Between Realms: The Visionary Etchings of Kurt Seligmann
DESCRIPTION:On display March 14 – April 27\, 2025 \nOpen to the public Friday – Sundays\, 12-5 pm \nReception: Saturday\, March 22nd\, 3 – 5 pm \n  \nWRCA CELEBRATES SURREALISM in a Collaboration with the Seligmann Center \nSwiss Surrealist painter Kurt Seligmann was a world traveler\, who spent his final years in Sugar Loaf NY\, where visitors to his home and studio included world renowned artists Alexander Calder\, Yves Tanguy\, Marcel Duchamp\, and Max Ernst\, among many others. Among Seligmann’s students there\, were Robert Motherwell and Orange County’s own Frank Shuback. \n“As we approach the end of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Surrealism\, we are excited to have a selection of Kurt Seligmann’s etchings from the Seligmann Estate in Sugar Loaf to be exhibited here at the Wallkill River Center for the Arts (WRCA) in Montgomery NY\,” says WRCA executive director Ursula Morgan. \nThe unique exhibit will also explore the artist’s place in the story of Surrealism. The Jewish Seligmann\, along with his wife Arlette\, was the first of the European Surrealists to emigrate at the start of WWII. Subsequently\, the couple were instrumental in helping to extricate a number of their fellow artists and writers from Occupied France. \n“In my position as Chair of the Seligmann Center Art Committee at Vision Hudson Valley\, I’m excited to curate and take part in this collaboration with WRCA\, which is my former work home of seven years\,” remarks Sarah Fortner.  “This exhibition was in the talking stages over a year ago and I’m pleased to be able to see it come to fruition.” \n  \n   \n  \n  \nThis exhibit is made possible through the partnership of The Seligmann Center and Vision Hudson Valley \nhttps://www.kurtseligmanncenter.org/ \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Carl Grauer\, Portraits: The Art of Looking
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibit of portraits by Carl Grauer.  On View: December 20\, 2024 – January 26\, 2025.  Gallery hours:  Friday\, Saturday and Sundays 12:00-5:00 pm  Reception:  Saturday\, January 11\, 2025 3:00-5:00 pm.  Receptions are always free and open to the public. \nStatement and Bio \nCarl Grauer is a painter based in Poughkeepsie\, NY in the beautiful Hudson Valley. He explores the construction of identity\, and how to memorialize objects and individuals through a contemporary documentarian approach to painting. He focuses on the documentation of time\, memory\, and imagination and how he may occupy the past\, present\, and future through these aspects. He is interested in the observation of that evolution of time and how it affects the artifice of the presentation of self\, and finally\, how by creating a painting\, the art acquires an identity and timeline of its own. \nBorn in rural Kansas\, Carl Grauer was raised in a town of 700 people and a graduating class of sixteen. He had a great aptitude of studies as well as art from a very young age but with a limited exposure to the arts. Following high school graduation he left to complete his degrees in human biology and his MFA from the University of Kansas and the University of Michigan\, respectively. Eventually moving to New York City he found solace in the arts and culture in abundance. He spent two years in London studying figurative and portrait painting with several studios and garnered success showing work internationally\, including exhibiting with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in London\, being shortlisted for the 2015 Wells Art Contemporary Award in the UK. Carl Grauer is a painter based in Poughkeepsie\, NY in the beautiful Hudson Valley. \n

SUMMARY:Likeness
DESCRIPTION:Group Exhibit of Portraits juried by Carl Grauer. \nPortraits are forever. They capture the likeness of the human subject they are portraying. It may be through a visual similarity with the sitter or the ephemeral essence of the subject. Portrait artists bring all kinds of intangible aspects to their work. The fact that we can look at a painting done hundreds of years ago and feel a kinship with the sitter\, in our contemporary moment\, is a testament to the power of portraiture. \nOn View: December 20\, 2024 – January 26\, 2025 \nReception:  Saturday\, January 11\, 2025 3:00-5:00 pm \nReceptions are always free and open to the public. \nGallery hours:  Friday\, Saturday and Sundays 12:00-5:00 pm

SUMMARY:Jena Argenta: Love Letters
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit of new works by Jena Argenta.  On view November 1st through December 15th.   Artists Reception Saturday\, November 9\, 2024 3-5:00 pm. Receptions are always free and open to the public.  Artist talk on December 15th.  The gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment. \nMulti-hyphenate\, language-based artist Jena Argenta will bring her most recent work in progress to Wallkill River Center for the Arts (WRCA) in stages beginning November 1\, 2024. The show titled LOVE LETTERS will feature work produced with funds from a 2024 Individual Artist grant. \n“How do you write a love letter in American Ink? is an intentionally fraught question— but it’s also the one we’re faced with\,” states Argenta. \nThe artist continues\, “The works presented here aren’t an answer to the question – they’re an attempt at asking. They’re a way of using multiple art forms as a way toward that asking. Works here were born in dialogue with community voices\, as well as historical\, literary\, and often banned or unrequited “lovers”. \n“In many parts of the world\, calligraphy is the highest art. Calligraphic forms & traditions are “love letters” in the deepest sense. In this series\, I seek to bend my own vantage point\, hand\, and English with brush\, reed\, sentiment\, and the use of empty space.” \nArgenta is a world-traveled artist\, whose vast experiences and adventures include apprenticeships in Arabic Calligraphy with Elinor Aishah Holland in NY and Ahmet Bursali in Istanbul. Her visual work has been privately and commercially commissioned internationally as well as in the US. Her Kimono designs walked the red carpet at the Fez Music Festival in Morocco. \n“We are so pleased to be able to provide gallery space for Jena to bring this unique and deeply felt work to the public. It comes to us\nin increments\, starting with several works on display during our regularly scheduled artists’ reception on November 9th and culminating in additional works and an artist’s talk (on) December 15th” says Sarah Fortner Pierson\, WRCA executive director. \n\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program\, a program of the New York Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by Arts Mid-Hudson. \n  \n
