DESCRIPTION:Juror Marlene Lipinski’s thoughts: \n“I was impressed by the works and could have selected many more for this show. A wide variety of media was in the art work and I tried to reflect that in my choices. The forest experience can be wide and varied. I enjoyed that many aspects of the forest were included in the work. Examples of water in many stages\, light\, tree species\, density verses open areas. One can be in the woods or observe it from afar. Both of these perspectives were present. SUMMARY:Marlene Lipinski: Look to the Woods
DESCRIPTION:I am a nature painter\, but contrary to the tradition I am not  interested in portraying nature from a distance in grand  panoramas and glorious vistas. My interest is in the intimate  connections we have with nature\, the ones we feel when we get  up close. The painting\, The Burr Oak: Spring\, as many of my  pieces\, comes from a series I think of as portraits: trees depicted as  family members or characters to know. I carefully select each  subject for the cultural\, historic or botanical significance. SUMMARY:Chris Gonyea: Trees\, Abstract in Nature
DESCRIPTION:I am an artist who is most commonly known for my paintings of trees. I have developed this style over the years through observation and a conscious effort to find the abstract in nature. The landscape has been a source of inspiration\, but I often attempt to reveal a deeper dynamic. Trees have emerged as the motif in which I can explore this possibility. \nThe tree\, itself\, is a living entity\, but in a way\, can be seen as a figure. A tree can become the vertical element in the horizontal landscape as in the formal figure/ground relationship. Within this context\, groupings\, dynamics and subtext occur to me as the images emerge. I try to remain fluid as the paintings develop. The rigid trunks and branches can act as a structure to improvise with and distort. I attempt to create vibrations and rhythm within my forests that may resonate with the viewer in a unique way. Another important consideration for me is the element of negative space. The limbs of trees can create connections described through the graphic line. The spaces that surround these are as significant as the forms themselves. Forms and patterns become apparent as one looks deeper into these landscapes. \nI often equate these branches to our own nervous system. I see the forest as a network that bridges the synapse and transfers energy to create a greater whole. The tree\, a figure in the landscape\, is at the same time\, the landscape itself. It is connected as much to the air as it is the earth. I wish to create an image the viewer can enter and with contemplation discover a greater consciousness.
