DESCRIPTION:A group exhibit of small works by Wallkill River Center for the Arts Artist Level Members.  All works are 8×10 inches (image area) or smaller and comprise a diverse array of media and artistic philosophies.  For this exhibit\, we will allow art work sold from the exhibit to be taken at the time of purchase since we are in the holiday shopping season. \nThe exhibit is on view November 1\, 2024 – December 15\, 2024 \nThe gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment. \nArtists Reception Saturday\, November 9\, 2024 3-5:00 pm. Receptions are always free and open to the public.

She worked in her family’s citrus orchards until an unseasonable frost killed the trees in 1982. This loss changed the trajectory of her career from farmer to artist. She went to art school at University of North Texas in Denton\, and studied Semiotics with artist Vernon Fisher\, then transferred to San Francisco Art Institute in 1987. Her real education happened as an artist’s apprentice in SoHo section of NY where she worked in several artist’s studios until leaving the city for the beautiful farmlands North of the city and began teaching plein air classes in 2000\, and continues weekly to this day in Tampa Bay.  She founded a plein air school with an Arts and Agricultural mission based on the historic Hudson River School\, called the Wallkill River School of Art. It still exists today as a nonprofit arts organization with a mission of bringing cultural tourism to the Hudson Valley region through plein air painting workshops and events on local farms\, historic sites and open spaces. Joyce has won many prestigious awards for plein air painting\, and is a signature member of New York Plein Air Painters (NYPAP)\, and International Plein Air Painters (IPAP)\, and Pastel Society of Tampa Bay (PSTB). She has been featured in many national newspapers and magazines like the New York Times\, Plein Air Magazine\, Plein Air Podcast with Eric Rhoads\, Pastel Journal Magazine\, Tampa Bay Magazine. She is represented by six galleries around the country including Wallkill River School in NY\, Woodfield Fine Art in St. Pete\, and Lakeside Inn Gallery in Mount Dora\, FL. She teaches workshops in pastel and plein air techniques across the country in Staunton\, VA\, Olana\, NY\, Tampa Bay Florida\, and is included in museum collections in the Georges Pompidou Museum in France and the Museum of Modern Art in NY. She recently won the Creative Pinellas grant for established artists in 2023\, Best in Show for Central Florida Pastel Society Annual Exhibit\, and Best in Show for 2024 Pastel Society of Tampa Bay Annual Exhibit.

Receptions are always free and open to the public. \nArtist Statement: \nIn the quiet life of inanimate objects\, seemingly still and motionless\, lives a story or narrative that can create a connection to our home\, family\, friends\, culture\, or customs.  It can elicit a visceral response that often invokes the senses.  Weather looking at a painting of food\, flowers\, or the humble objects that surround our daily lives\, we can find the subjective connection to a place\, a time\, or a moment.  As life impatiently careens forward and we are increasingly connected (or disconnected) by the labyrinth of technology\, painting the still life is a meditative process that connects me to the past\, present and future through the contemplative interpretation of its meaning\, its aesthetic form and its significance.  This show\, “Floral Impressions” is an expression of gratitude for the simple blessings and subtle beauty that exists in our everyday lives. \n  \n \n  \n

Receptions are always free and open to the public. \nThe gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment. \nArtist Statement \nFlowers have a primal meaning to Ward Lamb who sees them as transient and beautiful as so much of life is.  His paintings are rich in color and atmosphere\, painted from life. Lamb’s subjects come mostly from his garden\, and they suggest American-Impressionist imagery.  He works with the seasons as they are very important in his connection to nature.  In addition to flowers\, Lamb’s body of work includes many other subjects. \nBiography \nWard Lamb is a New York State native born in Syracuse\, New York.  He has been a prolific painter for the last 50 years. He has a graduate degree in painting from Brooklyn College and also attended the New York Studio School of Drawing and painting.  His works are in private collections and museums\, including the Leslie-Lohman Museum in New York City.  He also does portrait works on commission.  Lamb taught High School art at Minisink Valley Schools\, and also taught on a Fulbright Scholarship in England in 1993.  Ward Lamb is a resident of Slate Hill\, New York. \n\n  \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:August 17th Artist Talk with Alison Colby
DESCRIPTION:Wallkill River Center for the Arts (WRCA) will welcome photographer Alison Colby for an artist’s talk on Saturday\, August 17\, at 2PM. \n“Until I was approached by the gallery’s chief curator\, Billy Noonan\, I hadn’t seen my work outside of my phone\,” says Colby. “Billy helped me refine what an exhibit might look like—we discussed the number and size of images to show. He could see my vision and helped make it a reality. It was a revelation to see it on gallery walls.” \nColby’s solo exhibit #keepingitsecure\, currently on view at Wallkill River Center for the Arts through Sunday\, September 1\, has been a terrific success\, a crowd favorite. \n“We’ve had very positive responses to our two previous artists’ talks\,” says Sarah Fortner Pierson\, WRCA executive director. “It has been an enriching experience for the artists as well as the gallery visitors. Often\, art receptions can be busy\, noisy\, social events. They are a lot of fun. But sometimes they are not ideal for a focused engagement with the art. These artists talks offer a more intimate experience with the artist and their work.” \nAlison Colby’s photos have been on Instagram since 2014 (@sparkleshow). While the artist does take pictures of other things\, it is traffic cones that capture her eye. This exhibition shifts the viewer’s experience from the small screen to the gallery wall. \n“I’m new at all of this—and I look forward to sharing what moves me to stop and make a picture\, and what I am aiming for in a photo\,” Colby adds. “ At the artist’s talk\, I’ll be taking my cues from the exhibit’s visitors and will answer any questions they may have. I enjoy hearing about what people think is going on in my images. Everyone has a different story\, and I find them all thrilling. I like art to be fun\, and I look forward to exploring audience reaction in this casual and intimate setting with the folks at WRCA.” \nThe public is welcome free of charge. Donations are always gratefully accepted.\nThe artist will offer a show catalogue\, prints\, and a book for sale. \nAlison Colby\n#keepingitsecure \nPrevious artistic endeavors include “Aesthetic Technicians\,” a shared exhibition with visual artist Sas Colby at the The Space in Oakland\, CA (1980); “Losers Weepers\,” a public access cable call-in show celebrating found objects with Lizzy Yoder in NYC (1995-97) and the “Donkey Show\,” a collaboration with Robin Bordie featuring modified paintings at La Serena\, Mallorca\, Spain (2017). She has used her creative skills to resist the destruction of the East River Park\, participating in protests with East River Park Action. Most recently she participated in successful union actions for a fair contract at her job. Alison Colby has worked in magazine and newspaper production for over 40 years. DESCRIPTION:Flamenco Music and Dance  \nSunday July 7\,  2024 – 3pm  \nBlooming Grove UCC\,  2 Old Dominion Road\, Blooming Grove\, NY  10914 \nAccessibility:  Accessible entrance on the west side of the building.  Bathrooms in the basement are accessible via wheelchair lift. \nTRIO ANDALUZ – FLAMENCO is comprised of the 3 accomplished artists presented today\, all trained in the rigorous study and practice of Flamenco Music and Dance.  These dynamic musicians and dancer have a rich history of working together in different ensembles and dance companies\,  celebrating the ancient art forms of the Iberian Peninsula.  There will be a Q & A after the show. \n  \nDaniel Pimentel began playing guitar at the age of 12 and later took lessons in Mexico and in Spain with prominent teachers such as Manolo Sanlúcar\, José Antonio Rodríguez\, Gerardo Núñez and Antonio Rey among others.  Throughout his career he has trained in musical styles such as jazz\, classical and Mexican music as well as the classic Flamenco style. \nHis work includes a Tribute to Federico García Lorca\, El Cristo Andaluz\, Bodas de Sangre and Gypsies in pursuit. Daniel has collaborated with Flamenco artists such as Lucero Hernández\, Natalia Loza\, Fernando Martínez\, Las Cabales de Guadalajara\, Leo and Juan Treviño\, Erika Suarez as well as the Flamenco Companies of María Elena Anaya\, El Club España\, Marién Luévano\, Natalia Loza and Caña y Candela among others. He also worked with artists in other musical genres such as Joe Lovano\, Judi Silvano\, Juan Gabriel\, María José and Paco de María. \nHe has performed all over Mexico\, Madrid and Toledo\, Spain\, Quito\, Ecuador as well as New York and Chicago.  Daniel has recorded and released 7 albums of music\, including “A mi Aire” (2010) and “Sentimiento Flamenco” (2017). \n  \nNatalia Loza dancer\, born in Mexico City\, graduated from the National Dance School\, completing her training with masters such as María Elena Anaya\, Gabriel Blanco\, Silvia Martín\, Paloma Macías\, Olinka Trueba\, among others. She was invited to be part of the teaching staff\, teaching Stylized Dance and Stage Practices to the students of the Spanish Dance Degree. \nDuring her training she studied Spanish dance and Flamenco with teachers including Guadalupe Gómez (first dancer at the Madrid Conservatory)\, Manuel Reyes\, Mariano Bernal\, Ángeles Gabaldón\, Daniel Doña and Ana Lopéz\, among others.  In 2012 she took bata de cola and shawl classes with teacher Milagros Menjibar at the famed Cristina Heeren Foundation in Seville\, Spain. \nNatalia is one of the most outstanding dancers with mastery of the castanet in both Mexico and the American continent and she has performed in the major theaters in Mexico such as Bellas Artes\, Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City\, Guadalajara\, Cancun\, Queretaro\, Puebla and Los Cabos. \n  \nAlfonso Cid\, Flamenco singer and flute player. His mother and grandfather were his earliest influences. He attended classes at the prestigious Torres-Macarena Flamenco social club in Seville starting in 1987.  \nAlfonso also studied solfege singing and flute at the Seville Music Conservatory and was awarded two scholarships to study at the Cristina Heeren Foundation for Flamenco Art in Seville\, Spain.  \nHe has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center Out of Doors\, Town Hall\, London’s Royal Albert Hall\, Sala Covarrubias in Mexico City. Receptions are always free and open to the public. \n \nBiography: \nPeter A. Kopher of Warwick NY\, passed away on January 2\, 2023 at the age of 66 years old.  Peter  was an integral part of the Orange County\, NY arts scene.  He was a member of Wallkill River Center for the Arts and exhibited regularly and notably won First Place in the People’s Choice Award for his photograph “Into the Mist” in 2021.  Peter was also active in the Goshen Art League and the Warwick Art League. \nPeter A. Kopher had an insightful and astute eye as a photographer.   He was particularly talented at photographing ordinary objects but through incisive\, minimalist inspired composition and selective use of the view finder\, he elevated humble scenes\, and revealed them to be ironic\, contemplative\, sometimes humorous and often elegant. \nHe was also an avid swimmer and hiker\, managing to hike the NY\, NJ\, and PA portions of the Appalachian Trail. He adored nature; his favorite book was “Walden” by Thoreau. He most often found his own true self while walking outdoors. He was a great lover of animals\, including his two beloved rescue cats\, Cassie and Prudence. He was a devoted son\, brother\, father and husband. \nBorn in Rockville Centre\, NY on September 29\, 1956\, he was the son of Raymond and Joan (Creeden) Kopher.  Peter attended school in Farmingdale\, New York. He participated in several high school theatrical productions and also earned a high NYSSMA rating for his sousaphone playing. After high school graduation\, Peter received a scholarship to the New York Institute of Technology\, where he studied Communication Arts. He searched for work combining his love of theatre with his technical skills\, and eventually earned his union card for membership in Local #1\, the International Actors and Theatre Stage Union (IATSE). In a career spanning 30 years as a stagehand and lighting assistant\, he had countless fascinating stories to tell. He was a hard worker and well respected among his colleagues. His work credits included MTV\, Silent Library\, a one-year stint with the Broadway production of Les Miz\, The Rachael Ray Show\, Lighting Director for the Jon Stewart show\, Project Runway\, lighting the big tree at Rockefeller Center\, SNL\, the US Open tennis tournament\, and countless other free-lance jobs. Peter and his wife\, Sally\, became residents of Warwick NY in 2013\, following a move from Seaford\, NY after Superstorm Sandy displaced him from his home – a roomy and unique housebarge which was moored on the Great South Bay. \nPeter is survived by his wife of 11 years\, Sally (McCalmont) Kopher; twin daughters Caitlin Wilmot and  her husband Josh of Rochester\, NY; and Cristin Kopher of New York\, NY; step-daughters Sarah Sica and  her husband Ramiro Flores of Brooklyn and Anna Sica of Fairfield\, IA; grandson Bradley Wilmot; and sister Linda Finch of Columbia\, SC. He was predeceased by his parents and sister Laurie Parrish. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:WRCA presents a solo exhibit of photographic works by Alison Colby on view July 5\, 2024 – September 1\, 2024.  The gallery is open to the public Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment.  Artists Reception Saturday\, July 13\, 2024 5:00-7:00 pm. Receptions are always free and open to the public. \nArtist Statement: \n#keepingitsecure is the first exhibition of photographs by New York city-based artist Alison Colby.  While she does take pictures of other things\, it is traffic cones that capture her eye. “They are fun\, colorful and tell a story. Their inherent flimsiness and the futility of their mission is endearing\,” says Colby.  This exhibition shifts the viewer’s experience from the small screen to the gallery wall.  Her photos have been on Instagram since 2014 (@sparkleshow). \nArtist Biography: \nPrevious artistic endeavors include “Aesthetic Technicians\,” a shared exhibition with visual artist Sas Colby at the The Space in Oakland\, CA (1980); “Losers Weepers\,” a public access cable call-in show celebrating found objects with Lizzy Yoder in NYC (1995-97) and the “Donkey Show\,” a collaboration with Robin Bordie featuring modified paintings at La Serena\, Mallorca\, Spain (2017). She has used her creative skills to resist the destruction of the East River Park\, participating in protests with East River Park Action. Most recently she participated in successful union actions for a fair contract at her job. Alison Colby has worked in magazine and newspaper production for over 40 years. She has lived in the East Village (NYC) since 1981. \n  \n \n  \n

Receptions are always free and open to the public. \n  \nAmy Silberkleit is an artist in the Northern Catskills. Her work is based on the forests\, mountains\, roads\, trails and natural objects found near her home. The extraordinary beauty of the region\, the variety of plants\, forms and textures\, the dramatic changes from season to season are an inexhaustible source of subjects for her work.  She draws detailed landscapes on limestone blocks and hand-prints limited editions in her lithography studio. The tonal range made possible by the lithography stone’s fine texture lends itself perfectly to highly detailed representational drawings. In each piece\, she tries to capture a moment in time while showing the effect of light\, water and temperature on different elements in the landscape. Her intention is to draw the viewer in; to find a place in the landscape and observe the beauty of the natural world. An avid hiker\, she particularly enjoys walking through the forest in winter. Without leaves and undergrowth\, covered in snow\, the contours of the land are revealed. The tones and textures of the landscape stand out when they aren’t overwhelmed by the colors of other seasons. \n– \nSusan Siegel (b. 1964\, Los Angeles\, California) creates work that engages our connection to the natural world. Siegel holds an MFA from the New York Academy of Art in New York City (2010) with an emphasis in traditional oil painting. Her work has been exhibited in New York\, Chicago and Los Angeles\, including the Glass Gallery at Mana Contemporary\, Sotheby’s and Flowers Gallery. Her work has been featured by New American Paintings\, Hi-Fructose Magazine\, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2012 Siegel was the recipient of a studio residency at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts. She was awarded the Merit Award at the Silvermine Arts Center’s Paper 2019 exhibit curated by Jennifer Farrel\, Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In 2023 she was awarded the Woodstock Artist Association and Museum’s Annual Print Award. Siegel lives and works in the Hudson Valley.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 1st  3:00pm \nSeligmann Center\, 23 White Oak Drive (Sugar Loaf)\, Chester\, NY.  \nThis venue is ADA Accessible. \n  \nHilary Brown-Istrefi is a Canadian-American director\, choreographer\, performer\, and educator. She is a graduate of École de danse contemporaine de Montréal\, and over the last decade has performed in the works of Melissa Riker\, Judi Silvano\, Bouchra Ouizguen\, Jillian Peña\, Doug Elkins\, Linda Tegg\, and Candice Breitz. In 2013\, she co-founded the award-winning performance collective\, Same As Sister (S.A.S.)\, with her twin sister Briana Brown-Tipley. Their interdisciplinary commissions have been presented internationally in the US\, Canada\, Italy\, Greece\, and France. Hilary initiated HB² PROJECTS in 2017\, as a choreographic platform to expand her collaborations in performance. \nLamy Istrefi is a NYC-based drummer\, percussionist\, and composer originally from Mitrovice\, Kosovo. Istrefi attended the University of Music and Dramatic Arts Graz (KUG) in Austria before moving to the US. He is currently a member of Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and composer Joe Lovano’s Trio/Quartet\, and has performed and toured internationally with renowned musical artists Mark Murphy\, Sheila Jordan\, Dennis Irwin\, Butch Morris\, Juini Booth\, Jay Clayton\, Greg Tardy\, James Hurt\, Judi Silvano and Leo Genovese\, among others. \nTeri Roiger is a jazz vocalist\, pianist\, and lyricist. Her five albums have all met with critical acclaim\, as have her performances at festivals and top New York jazz spots. Her recordings show her uncommon knowledge\, appreciation\, and deep love for the artistry of Billie Holiday\, Abbey Lincoln\, and Thelonious Monk. Teri has an intuitive laid back sense of time reminiscent of Abbey Lincoln and Betty Carter but with her own uniqueness. JACK DEJOHNETTE (legendary jazz drummer). \nJohn Menegon is a Bassist & Composer who began his career in Montreal. After moving to New York City\, he spent 10 years playing for legendary tenor players Dewey Redman and David Fathead Newman. Since then\, his recordings as a bandleader have all met with critical acclaim\, and his latest project showcases his brilliant compositions. New York bassist JOHN MENEGON is in the line of George Mraz and Michael Moore; a harmonically sophisticated bassist with technical facility who swings hard when it’s called for.
