SUMMARY:Three-Day Portrait Workshop: From Drawing to Oil Painting with Carl Grauer
DESCRIPTION:Saturday mornings\, 9 am – 12 pm \nMay 23\, May 30\, and June 6 \n$150\, $135 Members (includes model fee) \n  \nThis intensive three-day workshop introduces artists to the disciplined yet deeply rewarding process of creating a portrait. At the heart of our approach is the pursuit of excellence\, not as perfectionism\, but as a commitment to observation\, thoughtful execution\, and a refined finish. \n  \nDay One: Constructing the Portrait in Drawing\nWe begin with the foundations. Students will learn how to construct the head through proportion\, structure\, and anatomical understanding rather than the focus on just the features. Emphasis is placed on observation and form. Through guided demonstrations and individual feedback\, participants develop a drawing that is structurally sound in plane\, value and form and ready to serve as the blueprint for painting. \nDay Two: Translating Drawing into Oil\nWith a strong drawing established\, students transition into oil paint. The focus shifts to understanding value relationships\, color temperature\, and the handling of paint while preserving the integrity of the original construction. Instruction emphasizes how to see the portrait as interconnected planes of light and shadow\, and varied temperature of chroma is introduced. \nDay Three: Refinement and Resolution\nThe final day is dedicated to bringing the portrait to completion. Students refine edges\, unify tones\, and develop surface sensitivity while strengthening likeness and presence. Attention is given to achieving cohesion and ensuring that drawing\, value\, and color work harmoniously together. The goal is not only a finished portrait\, but a deeper understanding of process that artists can carry into their independent practice. \n  \nThroughout the workshop\, students are guided from dry media into oil painting with confidence\, relying on the fundamental skills of structure\, observation\, and color. By the end of the three days\, participants will have gained a clear methodology for approaching future work with rigor and refinement. \n  \n   \n  \n  \nBiography\nBorn: 1975\, Wilson\, Kansas\, USA \nCarl Grauer is an artist\, a painter\, and a teacher. Grauer works within the genres of realism\, impressionism\, surrealism and narrative art.  They have an intense interest in portraiture\, the figure\, queer history\, time\, the natural world\, ritualism\, mortality\, and the spiritual realm. Born in rural Kansas\, Grauer completed their bachelor’s degree in Human Biology from the University of Kansas and their MFA in Medical Illustration from the University of Michigan.  They spent two years in London studying figurative and portrait painting with several studios and garnered success showing work both nationally and internationally\, most notably for the Hudson Valley Artists 2025: Movement exhibition at the Samuel Dorsky Museum\, and exhibiting with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in London.  Grauer has also participated in the Constance Saltonstall Artist Residency\, Jentel Artist Residency\, and the Blue Mountain Artist Residency.  Currently\, they are working and living in Poughkeepsie\, New York and showing with several galleries nationally including Carrie Haddad in Hudson\, New York. \n  \nREFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

DESCRIPTION:Thursday mornings\, 10 am – 1 pm \nJune 4\, 11\, 18\, 25 \n$135\, $125 members \n  \nBotanical Landscapes – Explorations into a variety of watercolor mediums \nIn this class\, we will be working with water media using watercolor pencils\, watercolor pigment\, gouache on paper or acrylic gouache on canvas. Artist’s choice of medium.\n\nWork with live plants and photos of landscapes.\n  \nSuggested materials list (bring what you have): \nRecommended Watercolor pencils:\nCaran D’ache Supracolor II Aquarelle Soft pencils with a full range of 120 colors. Start with a basic set of 12 – 24 colors and then decide if you want to get more. Bluish Pale is a great blending color\, warm and cool grays can offer some shadows without it being dirty graphite. \nTube watercolors and/or Gouache: \nyellow light or lemon yellow\, Burnt Sienna\, Winsor red\, cadmium yellow deep or Indian yellow\, Vermillion\, Permanent rose or Quinacridone rose\, Quinacridone Violet or Magenta\, French ultramarine (deep)\, Cobalt blue\, Cerulean blue or Cinerous Blue\, Hookers Green or Sap green. Winsor Newton designer gouache Rose Tyrian for bright cool pink/magenta. For darkest greens Holbein Shadow Green W 279. A tube of M. Graham white Designers gouache for adding hairs and veins. \nCareful with over painting with dense pigments which may destroy the luminosity of a hues and tones in painting. Brands: Sennelier\, Schminke\, Holbein\, M. Graham\, or Winsor Newton. A warm and a cool hue for each basic color works well. Yellow\, Red\, Blue and Brown. I occasionally use Paynes gray and lamp black \nFeathers are great for sweeping away any debris from erasing. Using the hand can add dirt or a thin layer of grease to the paper\, and this inhibits the paint. Use a piece of tracing paper or paper towel under your hands to protect the paper from body moisture/grease and to keep finished areas clean. Blue artists watercolor tape. Scissors\, single edge blade and emery board. \nPaper: \nBlock or individual sheets 12 x 16 Arches hot press for botanical subjects using watercolor pencils. If using individual sheets\, then a foam core board and artist’s watercolor tape all around for the paper to remain flat. If has backgrounds (landscape or still life) I prefer Arches cold press for color pencil and watercolor combined. Hahnemuhle hot press is excellent but more expensive. \nAdditional Materials: \n.03 lead Mechanical pencil Kohinoor Technograph 5611 C or graphite pencil HB lead and good technical sharpener and a rubber cement pick up rubber. \nTracing paper my favorite is Borden Riley sheer trace parchment #90 \nGraphite Saral transfer paper or silver butter knife \nSmall disposable cups for mixing color\, fine water mister\, water dropper bottle\, paper towels. \nPorcelain Palette for watercolors\, round watercolor brushes to blend or paint with. My preference for brushes is Raphael kolinsky sable 8404 #0\, 1\, 2\, 4\, and 6 or 8 for backgrounds. They are hard to come by. Try for Da Vinci\, Escoda or another available brand. \nPortfolio and tote bag to carry supplies. \n  \nFor over 40 years Roberta shared her expertise with hundreds of students as an instructor in both Botanical Art and Business Practices for Artists at the famed New York Botanical Garden and more recently locally at Wallkill River Center for the Arts\, Desmond Campus of Mount Saint Mary College\, Wurtsboro Art Alliance\, Catskill Art Society\, Ellenville Museum Library and Pine Bush Library. Her art is exhibited internationally\, collected by individuals and corporations. Roberta continues to travel finding unusual botanical specimens to paint or landscapes that she captures in plein air or sketches for future studio work. Her current home studio\, Squirrel’s Nest\, is located on top of Shawanga Mountain in Sullivan County\, New York with a view of the Hudson Valley.  \n\nREFUND AND CANCELLATIONS

DESCRIPTION:Saturday mornings\, 9:30 am – 12 pm \nJune 13\, 20\, 27 \n$120\, $105 for Members \n  \nFor beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced students. The instructor’s main medium is oils but any painting medium is welcome in this class. \nStudents are encouraged to follow their own stylistic inclinations while learning and practicing the basic rules of: drawing & painting techniques\, composition\, value\, color mixing\, color theory\, materials and supplies\, etc. \nSubject matter will range and include still life\, landscape\, portrait and figure. Whenever feasible students will work from life\, other times photographic references may be used.  Students may also use this class as an independent-study opportunity and work on their own personal projects. \nAll sessions will be live work sessions. No special skills required but a basic knowledge of wire wrapping would be helpful. \nAll tools and supplies provided. \n  \nTree of Life – One of many definitions: \nThe Tree of Life commonly represents the interconnectedness of everything in the universe. It symbolizes togetherness and serves as a reminder that you are never alone or isolated\, but rather that you are connected to the world. The roots of the Tree of Life dig deep and spread into the earth\, thereby accepting nourishment from Mother Earth\, and its branches reach up into the sky\, accepting energy from the sun and moon. \n  \n \nJanet Baskerville\, Artist Statement: My ethnic heritage and experiences are my greatest influences.  I enjoy working three dimensionally\, as it is an intuitive process.  Jewelry is my passion and I like the tactile nature of combining various methods of construction\, such as forging metal\, stamping and etching metal\, wire wrapping and weaving\, beading\, resin casting and the inclusion of relic-like found objects and artifacts. I enjoy mixed-media collage and use paint\, paper\, fabric\, fibers\, resin\, wood and clay in my work as well.
