Artist Statement: Art is the visual expression of the artist’s sense of life. Sometimes I see it and then work on it. Other times I just work on it and then see it. I rely mainly on found objects made of wood, metal, plastic and glass and incorporate them in my sculptures. I acquire most of my material from garage sales and antique shops in the area. I work for clarity and precision, yet the work must finally be mysterious and unusual. It must express structure, order, the marks of overall controlling intelligence, yet it must be alive, free, spontaneous. The ruled edge and the improvised, accidental line, together and harmonizing.
Biography: Frank Shuback began practicing art at in his youth and spent the early part of his career working in commercial and graphic design. His personal work continued to evolve and develop, exploring Surrealism and working with Kurt Seligman. In the early eighties, Frank Shuback was “into Surrealism and looking for a way out.” He turned to minimalism with it’s clean, fine lines and geometric abstractions, inspired by Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Mangold and Robert Ryman. Shuback says, “We want to have the objects still be what they are, but seen in a new context.” Throughout his artistic career, Shuback’s work has synthesized the clean lines and deceptively simple presentations of minimalism with the unexpected and provoking juxtapositions of inspired by Surrealism. His work employs found objects, collage and painting.
